Apart from this great advice that pretty much any beginner angler should listen to; you have to be in one of the most beautiful fishing spots I’ve seen online.

That is a fantastic video on jerkbaits. Thank you, and I learned so much. I found that many anglers don't trust jerkbaits, but through my simple experience those baits are one of the most effective, specially when you know the fish is there but it is not committed to any other baits you throw. It simple teases them so much that they've got to strike it. Before coming to Canada I had experienced the effectiveness on many fishes such as peacock bass, wolffish, snooks, and many Amazon region fishes species. Now, this is my 1st season here in North America, and it worked in every day I went out for fishing either for largies or smallies. Now, the only think I never saw in videos and I personally do, is that sometimes I use smallest jerkbaits, with 70mm, specially with clear water, with translucid, almost transparent colors. I think that the fish must realize that something is there, but shouldn't see exactly what it is. In that confusion, with all that jerk movement going on, they simply blow it. And event with this small bait I manage to get, 16, 18 and 19 inches bass with no problem. Since bass sucks it, if it is lighter it easily "jumps" into his mouth when they open it. And this 70mm have only 5 grams...

Last year the biggest pike I got was 100cm long, about 9-10kg one. Also the perch there can get quite darn big, not as big as bass you guys got in the US though. They tried to grow bass in some lakes but afaik, they didn't survive. Too bad, those things must be a lot of fun to catch. Pictures, sure thing! I always photograph my catch anyway. :D

Bass Geek, I enjoyed the video on Jerk Baits. What really caught my eye was your Rye Cove shirt. You most likely know where Mabe & Stanleytown are . That the area I am originally from, just a strange coincidence.
Hey Bass Geek. Never fished a Jerkbait before. Found 2 OzarkTrail 2 treble hook Jerbaits for cheap. The next Week fishing July 13th 2024. After watching your video. Felt confident to give them a try. I caught 3 Bass twice as long as the jerk bait it's self. But I caught some! I noticed the 2 treble hook baits come to the top of the water evenly. Trying to figure out how to add weight to the 2 treble baits to get them to sink at a slow rate. Then on the following Monday I ordered to J 300 KVD Stike King Jerkbaits. Haven't tried them yet. I notice the Jerk bait cast very well in a little wind. Threw them on a 7 ratio baitcaster on 30 pd braid. 6'8 MH FAST rod. It seemed to work very well from the bank too. Thanks for your info on Jerkbait fishing. Shawn.
You can add storm suspend dots or stripe or bigger treble hooks or wrap wire abound the treble hooks. Those are probably floaters look into some suspending jerkbaits.
Boss man, I watched your recent video on jerkbaits, then came to this video..epic video as always..I been pulling up goose eggs on lake Sinclair lately, so frustrating lol. Thanks for the video Dave
I retired after a long working life. When I was a kid, I fished everyday during summer break using a 10ft split cane rod, Nottingham reel and float supporting a weighted leader with maggot on the hook. Then sea fishing, which I found rather crude and more about watches, shades and shirts. I've just discovered the fishing that you do, 58 years later! It is your fault! You cost me quite a bit in 2 piece rods, decent reels and things that are inanimate but wiggle!😉 I bought a medium moderate action spinning 7' rod, 3000 reel (for capacity), 1st mono for the grip, then braided for its small diameter with strength and fluro leader for its sinking quality. (Psst! I did buy some floats and hooks/weights to learn how the rod behaves with the reel whilst maybe catching some "maggot suckers" before I embarrass myself with multiple hooks). Going to an Okeechobee log cabin on a canal, next month for 6 days... armed with knowledge from you, an ultra-lite rod also, with a 1000 reel, (along for the light tackle days). A bottle of single malt, for no reason whatsoever. Thanks for your explanations and talking "normally" and not as a smart-ass parent! I'll be taking you with me incidently.... on my phone though, for the learning moments. Thanks again.
Amazing video dude. Breaks it down as good as the pros. I love how you separated twitch from rip baits. You work them totally different. This was confusing for me as a beginner until I learned the difference. You just saved a lot of people a lot of time and money. Good job.
As always, your explanations and demonstrations are so very helpful. Like many, jerkbaits (and spoons!) have always been my least confident. Bank angling predominantly precludes spoons as I have learned in your channel, but I am curious if you think trying a vibrant shallow/small crank bait could work in fairly low visibility situations from the bank. You rock Hank! Tight lines
? I was checking out some if your older vids. one product you reviewed was called, stand on bottom crank.so I bought a couple.did you ever do a vid of using them.
I havn't I've been dying to but just never was in the situation to do it. I've still got'em and I hope this winter and next summer I'll be able to put them to use more. What do you think about them? Have you had a chance to use'em yet?
I have a question. Have you done a video for someone getting into the sport? Kinda like a beginners tack box type thing. I watch a few and really haven’t seen anything like that. With the expense that is put into the sport, it’s tough to buy several rods and reels for every situation. Also would a snap swivel hinder the action of different bait changes? Thanks for any feedback.
I haven't I've been planning on doing one and a little give away with it. I would love to do one with your input. Give me what you think is a reasonable dollar amount to start? I really want to do a whole series with this.
BassGeek that I know is a tough question. Hopefully others would give input as well. I did a little saving and think I went a little more than some but I like things that last. I sprung for 2 St Croix rods, 1 spinning 1 bait casting and both reels are Pflueger presidents. Needless to say that exceeds a $200 cap. But there are ways around the big box tags as I am always looking at Facebook for sale sites for deals. And to keep in mind tackle that would be good year round.
I just picked up the new Lews Tournament Pro LFS and I absolutely love it. Actually sold my Curado K ro buy another one because they are just so much better.
Great info ,, I’ve tried and no luck with these yet but I’m committed to getting it ,, shadow rap Shad color ok got it ,, which other jerk baits are good to start with ?
My two go to's are the shadow rap and the One ten or the one ten Pluse one. However there are several good baits. Smithwichk Rapala makes a bunch of good jerk baits. The xrap is a good one.
Great vid! This is the old school style of vid, that guys expect from the BassGeek. I know that I for one, am guilty of not throwing hard jerkbaits enough. I have gotten good bites on them early spring and late fall, but I know they are more versatile than that.
Something else to add is generally with a jerkbait, fish are looking UP and they're going to be swimming upward to get at it so you'll want to use it a little above the level where the fish are at. You won't catch as many when they're looking down on a bottom bite. If they're feeding on baitfish like shad, you'll get more jerkbait bites. If they're on bottom, you're better off with a shaky head or jig
Thank's very helpful vidéo ... but i need more info about 1foot visibility ( stain water ) in summer with round ( husky jerk ) ...maybe HJ10 in the clown or firetiger could be the deal ???? you're opinion abour this ? ;-)
Yes Bright or dark colors in lower vis water. You also want ones that make more noise and maybe a slight bit bigger so they can be seen from farther away. Don't be afraid to use them around cover in dirtier water.
Awesome video ,, my question is , is there a better time for a twitch bait verses a rip bait ?...... and what knot should I use ?........ I’ve tried jerkbaits but no luck yet , your information here I think is going to help , Thanks
I like the rips in warmer water post spawn though summer. I like the twitch baits when I want the bait to stay in the same place or area and colder water.
That is very true. However the industry has gotten much better over the past few years of making rods closer to standard. My two jerkbait rods are Fitzgerald vursa med moderate. The other is a Bass pro shops Carbonlite 2.0 Med Fast. both are 7ft rods.
Hello I have a question is it possible that I can add a egg sinker on the bottom of the fishing line to cast the jerk bait farther when going Pier fishing 🎣 thank you very much
@@BassGeek hello my friend I was thinking of doing like a drop shoot rig with a 1oz eggs sinker weight on the bottom of the fishing line and the jerk bait with a snap clips
water temps are in the Mid to low 50s here in upper WI, going out this weekend and for sure going to try some jerkbaits. hoping the turnover isnt killing the bite though.
Bombs_Away_motoworks Hey ifbthe turnover is on pick up a 1/2flipping weight and a strike king rage bug or structure bug (whatever they call it) and flipp laydowns and wood.
always got a flipping jig or t-rig setup for hitting the timber. my lake has alot of wood in it along the shorelines in about 5ft of water where it dips down to 10ft fairly quick. Ill have to pick up some of those rage bugs. ive been mostly throwing the catchco saw craw and the reaction innovations sweet beavers
Do you have a problem with me swapping out the triple hooks for single barb...I know I will catch fewer fish...but there's something about how a triple tears up a fish...I don't think they live two weeks after put-back
I have a question that I hope somebody can answer......is it OK to use a swivelsnap or quick connect, for quick switching between different baits rather than cutting and re-tying each time?? Or does it cause the bait to swim weird
@@BassGeek thank you for the reply!! Love your videos!! Iv never been much of a jerkbait person but I'm definitely going to be trying them out this year
I learned to fish a jerk bait from watching you and Debo a couple of years ago. I still need to work on being patient when the bait suspends. #100percentwatchsquad 🎣✌️
Ok Hank. I'm posting here because my questions are about jerk baits. Does it make sense to jerk bait fish from the banks of 2-4 feet deep ponds/lakes? Can you really work the bait the way you need to and present it correctly in such shallow water? My understanding is that a jerkbait is a clear water bait, better used on windy days with varying pauses depending on temperature of the water. Chrome on sunny, bluebird days and white/bone on cloudy days? Does a loop knot help the action? Braid/leader on my spinning reel okay? Mono feels like a rubber band and fluoro doesn't play nice with spinning reels. I'm sure there are a ton more questions I'll have but, that's it for now. Thx and sorry for the long post! December in NJ. Ugh!
First Awesome questions! Yes totally. Use the shallow divers. Now I know there are tons of us out there that say you have to do it this way or that way you have to twitch it down blah blah blah.. hahaha Making fun of myself you like that. hahaha. The truth is just like a crank bait you can control your depth by the angle of your rod. Even from a boat It I've tossed into super shallow water I'll hold my rod tip high and twitch the shiz out of it. The colors you list are a great starting point. Me If I'm in clearer water so say 2-3 feet I'm gonna go more natural on the blue bird skies. Even if you have a foot of viability but the pond is just 3ft deep for that pond that's pretty clear. You can see a third of the way to the bottom. Now braid is fine I would suggest a 8ft fl leader but that depends on water viability also. Even in a foot I'm going with a 8ft fl leader. No mono for sure no mono. Yes a loop does help. I've been playing with that. If the fish are less active however leave the loop out. Less is more when the water gets cold. Hope that helps
@@BassGeek Very helpful. What you said about holding the rod tip higher is what I find I'm doing. I hold it near belt height or even higher sometimes. I'm level with the 2-4' water anyway. If I twitch down, I hit the bank at times with my rod and, the bait digs into the lake bottom. Now, the part I'm most confused about is color. Need a rule for the use of flash, ghost and natural colors. You mentioned using natural colors on bluebird days. Huh? LOL Thanks again.
My lake the water is still a bit cold so I'm trying the jerkbait. Do you tie your line direct to the ring or should I be using a clip? I'm also bank fishing I find using straight braid helps me from getting snagged on the rocks on the bottom
I would at least use a fl. leader. work the bait in a more upward motion to contour the incline of the bank as the bait comes back to you. I use clips when I'm in search mode and once I know they are on a color I tie a loop knot. I have a video called best topwater knot that shows you how to tie it.
I don't know for sure why they stop eating on a jerk as well just after post spawn. If I had to give a reason or 2 most are going out deep and with the heat they aren't wanting to chase up as much. Second I just don't think they see as many dying shad in the summer so the motions isn't as natural??? That's my best guess. hahahaha
Hey Bass Geek! Do I need a bait caster to fish jerkbaits? I have a 7 ft medium fast action spinning rod with a 2500 reel. I do have a 7 ft bait caster rod but don’t currently have a reel. Also thanks a lot for the advice on the pauses, I’ve been fishing it in the summer with 4 second pauses before seeing this!
NOOOOOO! I fished them on a spinning rod for EVER. You can cast them longer and get them deeper. It just more comfy on a BC. Be sure however you get at LEAST a 6 speed reel.
As i am new....I have one question. jerkbait is so light. So when I put it in the water , It looks just float on the topwater. is it gonna sink and stay at the mid depth of water when I reeling in slowly??? and How about crankbait?? does it move same way?
Hey bass geek, I'm at the lake right now just finished watching your jerkbait video, right after the video I stopped taking such long pauses before my twitches and bam I just put a 4lber in the boat👏 great advice, you've hooked me up on so many more fish this year

SoHo and WAY TO GO!
@@BassGeek Thanks BassGeek! Will do! Which hook would I put wire on Front. Middle or Back? Shawn
Boss man, I watched your recent video on jerkbaits, then came to this video..epic video as always..I been pulling up goose eggs on lake Sinclair lately, so frustrating lol.
Thanks for the video
Dave
Sorry! Thanks for the time you spend here.
@@BassGeek always Hank..I've been watching your videos for a long time.
Great descriptions on everything you need to know about jerkbaits. Gonna try it this fall. Thanks!
Good luck! Hope ya catch a toad
You cost me quite a bit in 2 piece rods, decent reels and things that are inanimate but wiggle!😉
I bought a medium moderate action spinning 7' rod, 3000 reel (for capacity), 1st mono for the grip, then braided for its small diameter with strength and fluro leader for its sinking quality.
Hey thanks and sorry. hahahaha Hope you catch a big one and a bunch!

Thank you very much.
Hey Bass Geek, what is the name of bait at 3.24? I like such color!
Amazing video dude. Breaks it down as good as the pros. I love how you separated twitch from rip baits. You work them totally different. This was confusing for me as a beginner until I learned the difference. You just saved a lot of people a lot of time and money. Good job.
Thank you very much
thank you for the valuable information. I have a question regarding the taste of the spoon, what kind of fish can I use?
I used for pike fish
I'm not sure for pike sorry.
@@BassGeek I advise you to try it, it is very effective for this type of fish
As always, your explanations and demonstrations are so very helpful. Like many, jerkbaits (and spoons!) have always been my least confident. Bank angling predominantly precludes spoons as I have learned in your channel, but I am curious if you think trying a vibrant shallow/small crank bait could work in fairly low visibility situations from the bank. You rock Hank! Tight lines
Absolutely Square bill's and your smaller 1/4 up to 1/2 ounce lippless baits are bank staples.
Best explanation video I have found on Jerkbaits. Thank you
Thank you very much.
Awsum job BG... I struggle with this tech. Trying to up my game ... much help appreciate ya... Fishon ! MG
Thank you very much and I hope it helps.
Wow I dont have to go fishing. I can just watch you day and night.
Lol go fishing nothing like the real thing but thanks for watching!
I like the fact that you got straight to the point
Well forgive me in some other video's I do like to talk about fishing. hahaha
Subscribed because of this video. Thanks for the information. Any tips for catching peacock bass on lures in floridas canals and bank fishing
Thank you so much but I've never gotten to fish for Peacock. I hope to soon.
I just picked up the new Lews Tournament Pro LFS and I absolutely love it. Actually sold my Curado K ro buy another one because they are just so much better.
Dollar for dollar it's hard to beat the LFS's. Love Lews.
Ty. I have learn alot from your videos.i had just gotten a lews baitcaster.i love it.keep them videos.
Hope ya like it and thanks for watching. It means more that I can say that you left this comment. It's why I do this.
@@BassGeek yes I do love it.i notice a big difference .whats the best lure you would use for night fishing..
Have you ever tried a berkley surge shad? If so, what do you think of them?
I have not yet. Now I will though.
Man I'm telling you you can crack'em in the post spawn.
Already catching bass on jerkbaits on Lake Gaston in Va, Fished around shad schools. FLC Dennis
Nice. I can't wait for it.
Great instructional video! Thank you. You've gained me as a subscriber brother🤜🤛
Awesome and thank you.
Thanks BG, you southern boys know how it's done !
lol sometimes. Thank you.
Jeremiah Giles Thant is very true.
How much braid are you using for backing? Or are you spooling it up with braid and running a flouro leader?
I have a video that shows all that. However don't use a leader. I normally put a couple cast worth of fluorocarbon.
Don't be afraid to use them around cover in dirtier water.
with jerkbaits, is it best to use a loop knot direct to line or can you use a snap swivel for faster lure changes
I like a loop as it gets cold but If I'm trying to figure it out I use a snap to change fast.
This was amazing. Truly insightful advice. I hope it produces results for me!
Keep me posted I hope ya catch a toad.
What color would you start with late fall 10+ feet of visibility
A translucent color for sure. Ghost is my go to in those conditions.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
I'm a big time rookie with a jerkbait, very informative!
Hope it helps.

Great Vid Hank, seem to learn something from you time after time!! Thanks. You tie a palamor, loop or improved clinch knot on the jerk/twitch baits?
My go to is a simple San Diego Jam I need to show do a video on that someday it's fast and super strong.
I loved how detailed this was.
Brayan Molina Thank you I try my best.
Thanks for the vid. Yes I am very much a newbie. I haven’t even caught a bass. Yet. More tips please. 👍🏻
I'll do my best. I try to put as much info into all my video's be sure to check some of the older ones out.
I will be watching for sure. 😎
what rod are you using , consider that medium power in one company is different than other ; thank you very much
That is very true. However the industry has gotten much better over the past few years of making rods closer to standard. My two jerkbait rods are Fitzgerald vursa med moderate. The other is a Bass pro shops Carbonlite 2.0 Med Fast. both are 7ft rods.
Great video man. Very informative. Thank you. You got a new subscriber. 👍

Hello I have a question is it possible that I can add a egg sinker on the bottom of the fishing line to cast the jerk bait farther when going Pier fishing 🎣 thank you very much
I mean you can do whatever you want. I’m not sure how that’s gonna work but hey try it
@@BassGeek hello my friend I was thinking of doing like a drop shoot rig with a 1oz eggs sinker weight on the bottom of the fishing line and the jerk bait with a snap clips
water temps are in the Mid to low 50s here in upper WI, going out this weekend and for sure going to try some jerkbaits. hoping the turnover isnt killing the bite though.
Damn great video!!! You give excellent instructions, much appreciated.
Hey Thanks!
Do you have a problem with me swapping out the triple hooks for single barb...I know I will catch fewer fish...but there's something about how a triple tears up a fish...I don't think they live two weeks after put-back
Man it's your baits but I have to disagree that they don't live. Bass are a very tough fish. We are not talking trout here.
@@BassGeek Thank You for your answer
I have a question that I hope somebody can answer......is it OK to use a swivelsnap or quick connect, for quick switching between different baits rather than cutting and re-tying each time?? Or does it cause the bait to swim weird
Absolutely. Just use a good smaller one so not to through the balance off to much.
Yo’ll get there. I need more patience myself
Would you consider the Rapala cd7 countdown a jerkbait
Yes but those do have a faster fall rate than others.
Great video Hank. How's the tournament fishing going.
Not good didn't get to fish the super and so didn't make the Regionals.
Huh? LOL
Thanks again.
Try a daiwa steez sv for casting light jerkbaits, I've casted 1/8oz up to 3/4oz with my steez sv. I pair it up with a st.croix rage
Jake orr I love a Steez. My Buddy The Ledgeheads owner uses them all the time. Thanks for watching
$$$$$$$
My lake the water is still a bit cold so I'm trying the jerkbait. Do you tie your line direct to the ring or should I be using a clip? I'm also bank fishing I find using straight braid helps me from getting snagged on the rocks on the bottom
I would at least use a fl. leader. work the bait in a more upward motion to contour the incline of the bank as the bait comes back to you. I use clips when I'm in search mode and once I know they are on a color I tie a loop knot. I have a video called best topwater knot that shows you how to tie it.
@@BassGeekthank you sir! Do you remove the split ring from your jerkbaits or was that just for top water walking baits?
@@aarondavis8224 I do remove the split ring if I use a clip or the loop knot.
I did very well in the spring for smallies on the jerk bait but it seemed to die off the end of June to mid July any thoughts as to why?
I don't know for sure why they stop eating on a jerk as well just after post spawn. If I had to give a reason or 2 most are going out deep and with the heat they aren't wanting to chase up as much. Second I just don't think they see as many dying shad in the summer so the motions isn't as natural??? That's my best guess. hahahaha
Yeah they probably just moved. Jerkbaits work all year round for me. Especially on shallower flats and during high blue skies.
I love'em over deep laydowns in the morning during the summer.
Can you describe when the best time is to use a blue and black jig with a blue crawl as a trailer
Like electric blue? I like it on a muddy water with just inches (8 or less) and sunny days
@@BassGeek thanks so much when you can could you do a video on it. Thanks👍👍👍👍
Is there a particular week or should I say size in the jerk bait you like to throw for instance in salt water
I have not fished much salt sorry
As i am new....I have one question. jerkbait is so light. So when I put it in the water , It looks just float on the topwater. is it gonna sink and stay at the mid depth of water when I reeling in slowly??? and How about crankbait?? does it move same way?
Are you fishing from the bank or a boat?
