Actually, no French Canadian that I know of. Mostly German, English and Irish with that tiny bit of Ashkenazi Jewish that you mentioned. Did you notice that tiny bit of Druze that FamilyTreeDNA picked up? Could that be related to the Jewish ancestor? Also, any thoughts on why FamilyTreeDNA shows Eastern European but Ancestry, 23andme, and MyHeritage do not?
Huh, I don't know why I thought you had French Canadian ancestry. It has been a while since I saw the video about your family tree, so I must have mixed it up! I didn't notice the Druze but it certainly could be related to that Jewish ancestry, although at less than 1% I imagine it may just be a misread. The Eastern European on FTDNA might just be how they are reading some of your German ancestry, especially since that Eastern European reading seems concentrated in present-day Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. You'll notice as well that the only 'German' in the FTDNA reading is 4% Central Europe, so that makes it seem even more likely that it's just how they are defining your German ancestry.

@@UsefulCharts In addition it needs to be noted that just because someone came from Germany or identified as German by no means needed to be from German descent. In the eastern provinces of the German Empire a lot of the inhabitants were slavs that were culturally assimilated over the centuries. In addition a lot of people moved from the mostly rural and poor eastern provinces to the industrial centers in the west. Therefore a lot of people with a for example polish background at a DNA level would end up identify as German. Similar things happened within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but within an Empire that was ethnically a lot more diverse then the German Empire.
@@GeneaVlogger speaking of the German. How is it that I have 4% German but neither of my parents nor my mother’s mother have German?! I will note that when I first tested my dad some Jewish was picked up. I think it was changed to Sweden though.
I tested with Ancestry, uploaded wherever I could. FTDNA gave me the most accurate admixture according to my family tree (100% Italian, all my great grandparents emigrated to the US from southern Italy, and I can trace most lines to the 1700s). I also got trace results for Druze and Yemenite Jewish,which from what I have read are genetically quite similar.
French Canadian here - yep, everybody's related to everybody in my town. It's ridiculous. The settlers came from Gaspé to New Brunswick in 1910 and a hundred years of mariages later we're now all cousins or something. I've found my ex very far away from here just to make sure there wasn't any relations in our ancestry. LOL
Same with French Canadians coming down into northern New England/ New York to farm. I am related to so many people on both sides of the border, some of my family has been here since the 1700s. I’ve found out I was related to a few random people I’d gone to high school with through these tests and I had no idea. My brother became good friends with this one guy and my mother says, oh he’s your cousin, but the families are so extended they’d never met. No one here for me!
Ancestry showed from my grandmother’s side, Acadian. They were from New Brunswick Canada. It goes back over 200 years. Found all these people related to me. I never knew about this either. It’s fascinating, seems like they married within families?
Iceland is just as bad I've heard, you have to check an app and make sure you are not related before you date or you know, if you care...😘

Its important to remember they aren't actually reading your ancestry, they are comparing your genetics to other people with known family trees. This works pretty well with Europeans, or any group with migration records to the new world, but realistically most of the ethnicities from even 200 years ago were not even identified before they were lost, let alone recorded. If you are from the Americas or Africa or even much of Asia the detailed information to place your ancestors on the map just arent there.
I did Ancestry and my grandma was mostly Native American grew up on a Indigenous community until her teenager years and spoke the language, when I did the test it show %30 + Native Americans and the region was from up north of Mexico places like Texas . My grandma always told us she was Yaqui which is a tribe recognized by the USA and Mexico it cover parts of North Mexico and South West USA also my European ancestors came from the Basque Country, Portugal and Asturias, Spain , I started a family tree and found my ancestors the left Europe and settled on Mexico in 1836 from one side of the family I haven’t work the far on my moms side .
@@anaz5918 yeah they'll identify Native American DNA, but that's all it will say... "Native American". It'd be like telling a white person they're "European", which most people would already know. The problem is Native tribes aren't offering up their DNA to be tested, so there isn't much reference data for people with Native American heritage who want to DNA test. Maybe that'll change in the future

I did Ancestry and am matching to more than 162k people. I had my father do a dna test in order to see which side of my family was my mother’s (she’s deceased) and which was my father’s side. It didn’t help much. It’s like 90% match to my dad. This includes relatives that I know are on my mother’s side. It seems like my parents are distantly related, but I have not found a common ancestor. I’m Puerto Rican and have multiple countries mated to me. I matched up to someone who is clearly non-hispanic through my 2% Irish. I am 62 and my father was 93 and I never expected to have so many people be related to me.
That's normal on the Caribbean islands. My parents are from Dominican Republic, I tested them and they're not related but I found out some distant great-grandaunts and uncles of my mother and father married and that's why I get matches from the both sides. It could happen to you, especially if they come from the same region in Puerto Rico.

@@GeneaVlogger I have been watching some of your videos this evening and was thinking about this comment. It might be cool to do a stream that was "how far can we get in 3 (?) hours" tracking a person's genetic history. I have no idea if that is reasonable or 3 (?) hours gets you nowhere and would just be frustrating. But if it was a reasonable concept I would totally watch that, and also volunteer as a guinea pig for that (all I really know about my father is from my DNA). I would also pay for such a thing, knowing that it would be equivalent to going to costco and trying on the samples - far from buying the entire product, but a nice little taste of what is possible with DNA & genealogy tracking.

It's funny that you used the example of one grandparent giving you 27% of your DNA profile, because that is exactly what happened to me. I have a Croatian grandparent and my DNA came out with 27% Balkan.
i been delving deep into where my ancestral groups came from and looking at the migration of the millennia the interesting one was my mother is welsh north wales to be precise when they looked at the mitochondrial DNA according of a large amount of the Welsh population thee is Levantine DNA and also commonly fond with Ashkenazi Jews of Europe but like way back in history with the DNA marker appear with very high frequency in Wales - at around 11%. which sort of makes sense that Welsh has more connection to the Semitic language chain than it does European. so ye i am having fun

I found this very interesting. I live in California, my family has been here since between 1900 and 1930. I have done DNA testing on Ancestry, FTDNA and 23andMe. I have been doing genealogy for about 3 years. On Ancestry I started finding a lot of cousin matches which seemed to match on both my mother’s lines and my father’s. Well, it turns out that because both of the families had large portions of the families that go way back in American history and there looks to be quite a bit of Endogamy. My mother’s lines include ancestors from Jamestown(early Virginia/Kentucky), Mayflower(early Massachusetts ), and early New York and New Jersey. mtDNA chromosome seems to be H1u1 and may lead to the Netherlands. For my father’s Y-chromosome DNA, I have recently tested my brother, but haven’t received the results yet, but I have traced most of that family back to the 1500s in Switzerland (went to Switzerland in 2019 and hired genealogists to help there), they are the most recent emigrants. The other side of his family can trace most of it’s roots back to early Virginia/Kentucky, and Mayflower(early Massachusetts). Both sides followed the general early migrations through upstate New York, then to Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri then on to Minnesota and the Dakotas and finally to California. It seems that a lot of the Mayflower descendant families tended to settle in the same communities. Both sides are predominantly British, Irish, Scottish, Germanic, French, and general Western European. This helps clear up why I was finding so many distant cousins who matched both sides. I have downloaded my DNA kits to GEDMatch and am doing most of this research on my own. BTW…my daughter-in-law is Chinese, from Beijing, your Chinese wife video was of interest to me as well.
How long did it take results to come back from Ancestry? It been over 4 months for me..
same... my family has been in California for 100 years. My ancestry tests show most of my family lines have been in America since the 1700s
I did notice that Ancestry seems to be most accurate in the details of my ethnicity. 1/4 of my ancestry is East Prussian (Baltic Prussian, Lithuanian, Masurian Polish, and Salzburger Exulanten/Austrian), and the other 3/4 was a mixture of British Isles and its surrounding shores and islands. Ancestry gets it pretty spot on, while FTDNA says I am roughly 2/3 Irish, 1/3 Polish, with traces of Finnish (My Y-DNA Haplogroup is N) and the Caucuses Region (Unsure what’s that’s from).
This is so timely. I am sending off my circle dna and ancestry dna tests off next week!!

@GeneaVlogger, I've watched a couple of your videos and found them to be very interesting. I have not done a DNA test as yet but know that on my father's side of the family, my grandmother is half German and half Cherokee Indian. My grandfather has some Sioux Indian in his line but I haven't been able to figure out exactly where the Sioux Indian comes in, when there's a lot of Irish and Pennsylvania Dutch there. Short of doing the DNA test, how do I find out where each individual part comes from (Sioux Indian as an example)? On my mother's side, my grandfather was Irish and grandmother was English, Welsh and I believe Swedish or Netherlands. As I work on my family tree, I've noticed that there is some ancestors from Sweden, the Netherlands and Denmark.
I have a recommendation, can you do a reaction to "The Swede who fought Brits in Africa and Later Joined them to fight Germans"?
It a short biography of a Swedish person journey where he joined the second Boer war for Sweden and later WW1 for Australia. The description has scources and great resources for those with Swedish or Australian genealogy.

I saw the Useful charts one at the time he put it up and wondered why he said mainly American for Ancestry, and I'm wondering if he knows that Ancestry UK exists for us on this side of the Atlantic, which also has many records on it. I'm glad to hear you say that it isn't mainly North American.
Part of why I even know they are split into 4 main websites is because I am an affiliate, so I had to sign up for each affiliate program separately! The UK records are quite strong as well.
23 and me actually gave me a mt DNA group of X2A1 so I thought that was somewhat detailed. I haven't done another test though since the results I got matched quite well with my family history that I know of
Something so interesting is my uploads are different from the purchased kits with my results. And I purposefully didn't add under my own purchased accounts on purpose using an alias. While they had some major similarities, this equally had major differences. Very interesting for me because even the DNA matches changes too.
The reason for that is because each DNA testing company have SNPs which they test for that the others don't. So if you upload your Ancestry results to FTDNA but also take a test through FTDNA, they will be different because some SNPs read by Ancestry won't be included in FTDNA's algorithm but at the same time FTDNA is looking to read SNPs which Ancestry did not include in their reading. They all still test mostly the same SNPs though, but even a small 1% change can make a big difference with these complicated algorithms.
@@GeneaVlogger This makes sense which is why when I uploaded my Ancestry to My Heritage and received 0.9% West Asian I decided to upload my 23andme to My Heritage. I figured it would confirm the 1st result or debunk it. I wound up even more confused because I received 1.4% Central Asian. The only reason I bothered with the 2nd upload to My Heritage was because I never received anywhere outside of Europe on Ancestry or 23andme from the first time I tested through updates. I can confirm the change in matches as well.
My father’s haplogroup via 23andme comes through J-M172, but ends with J-Z631. My mother is U5b1d. So it does show more detail.
I saw the original video when he first posted. I loved seeing your reaction to it. I have tested with both Ancestry and 23 and me. I am interested in other DNA testing companies because I'm adopted. I actually found out I was adopted because my son took an Ancestry DNA test. Basically I'm looking my family. My family tree right now would start with me and it would have my children and my two grandsons all connected to me. So far I have only found a half-brother who was also adopted and his son. There is a little more to the story but it just gets weirder and weirder and is too long for here. I would love to be able to make a family tree that links me to parents and grandparents etc...

I liked when you talked about old communities. I have a broad Kinship with around the 200 or so old communities from the Appalachian Mountains from New York to Alabama.
Only one still exists today sadly. I am literally kin to most families from the Appalachian Mountains like an intertwined Tumbleweed.
I took the Familytree DNA. Do you recommend taking another test or just uploading those results to another platform? I do know that is a less expensive option with some companies. I tried 23andMe before family tree and they could not get a DNA on me. So the spit test is out for me.
Which DNA testing do you recommend for Asian heritage?

Back in the early 2000's Ancesty did offer the haplo group info with your results. It was a mitochondrial swab test. I have seen them update several times and I wonder if they are reviewing the same original test samples. Their breakdown has changed a lot from each update. It absolutely does not show accurate info from my great great, great and direct grandparent info. I'm not adopted so I'm kind of thinking about taking a different type. Any suggestions?

Probably as you share the same DNA. It won't be identical of course but you are genetically siblings.

What would you make of around an 8% italian reading in Myheritage but not significant amount of matches in today's Italy? That showed up on my grandfather's test and it was a complete surprise. He's from northern Spain.
If you have a single ancestor of Italian ancestry where that is coming from, it would be the equivalent of a Great Grandparent to 2nd-Great to your Grandfather - so a 3rd-great or 4th-great grandparent to you. That would be someone born in about the late 18th century or early 19th century. If this is the case, he may not see many Italian matches because he is of an older generation and the living Italian cousins are so distant that they share little to no dna. It is also possible that none of his close Italian relatives have tested (or at least in the database(s) with your Grandfather's DNA).
@@GeneaVlogger Thank you very much! I was thinking something like that might be the case, but it's nice to have the opinion of a professional. I've started the research and I've found 3 generations (1700s) on his grandmother's branch. Looks like I might be able to find that italian ancestor at this rate if they exist. I mostly need time haha. It's quite exciting to have an specific goal.
Spain and Italy are pretty close geographically and have a shared history, so that's not too surprising. In a similar way, a lot of Irish people test as "Scottish" due to mass immigration about 400 years ago

I noticed that in my DNA chart my cousins on my paternal side are not correct, my 1st cousin registers as my 2nd cousin. On my maternal side the relationships are correct. I’m wondering is it because I’m more closely related to my maternal family?
I did the ancestry test. It shown I was 3-5% Nigerian. No where in my tree (both maternal and paternal) within the 500bc to present does it show any one from Nigeria. Can you give any suggestions to me how to trace who came from Nigeria? I’m mostly English, German, Scotland, and Ireland. Also my dad just got his results and he does not have the Nigerian dna.

I'm confused now. I'm from South East Europe, so I'm not expecting all of these databases to have a lot of data on my region, so what would you guys recommend? I'm interested in going back 4-5 generations, as I don't know anything about my great grandparents.
I would do Ancestry DNA you might be able to contact someone who knows about your greatgrandparents.

I took the Ancestry DNA test in 2016 and so has my half-sister. My aunts and cousin took the 23&Me which makes me sad :(

@@GeneaVlogger I watched it and am probably a little more confused so please bare with me, I'm female and adopted so if I'm trying to find my birth mother or anyone on her side of the family tree and they also are in some database I use my antichromosal (don't know if that was correct word 🤭) where it shows my X chromosome matches only to see who is only on my maternal side? Which DNA test is the most accurate?
Question! Should I get the Ancestry or MyHeritage test? I live in Canada, but everyone in my family immigrated here within the last 65 years. On my dad’s side we’re Irish and British, so I’m thinking Ancestry would be best, but on my mom’s side we’re 100% Italian, from Calabria. Would MyHeritage be better for that section, or should I just stick with Ancestry?
I should add: I know we probably aren’t *100%* Italian, but that’s what we’re aware of and identify as culturally

23andme may get into more detail about your Y-DNA, though I'm definitely going to stil take either the the Y-111 or Y-700 from Family Tree DNA someday. They marked our Y haplogroup as J-M267, our mitochondrial is C1b4.
I live in Sweden and have really unique y-chromosomal DNA. On 23andme it says J-L26. Have done big Y on familytreeDNA on my dad.
Yes that is pretty rare. I have a Y-DNA Haplogroup of N-L550 that might be a bit more common in Sweden (10% of the population or so), but there was a grave the was found in Sweden from about 1050 AD, and the skeleton’s Y-DNA Haplogroup was J2a1a1b2a1b1. The code is VK42 for that find.
Would you recommend Ancestry or My Heritage for an Australian with European ancestors?
Pay for Ancestry and then upload your dna to My Heritage. That's what I did and it was free.
What test should I take in your whole opinion? I have African American and Asian Descent as wells i'm sure some european descent. My Dad's Mom which was my grandmother is caucasian and his dad is African American, but my grandmother which is my Dad's mom is a orphan from what I understand and my mother is Vietnamese. I want to take a DNA test, but don't know which one will be best for me as my lineage is everywhere. Any help would be splendid.

Yea, 23&me gives more specifications on haplogroups, like my paternal is R-CTS24
maternal haplogroup is H2.. My sons paternal haplogroup is E-V13.. I also had my dad take a test and his maternal group is K1a4d.. I was really interested in my ancestry. I’m 99.8 European; 73.1 British & Irish, 19.6 French & German, and 5.0 Broadly Northwestern European which adds up to 97.7. Are there any other options that can break down the European ancestry better? 🤔
Have you done CRI Genetics? I did and it says I have 21% Italian but I don't know anyone in the family that was Italian,
I have done them, and I came up having 34% Italian. I am thinking it has to be from my mother's side...she is Hispanic. Funny thing is I only had like 2% from Iberian Peninsula. So, I am guessing that is it. On Ancestry, I had it say the opposite. It basically said I was almost 34% Iberian Peninsula and like 2% Italian. But, the biggest surprise is that CRI found all my recent countries that I know of, and Ancestry did not. I can trace my family on dads side back to 1428. So, I am confused 😕. I still thing CRI is more accurate, but seems like Nebula may be the way to go to figure out the Italian bit once and for all
It's interesting to hear this guy in the video mention his connection with Ireland and Nova Scotia... I am first born Canadian from Irish lineage and live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. I have a 23 and me kit here but have not sent in or set up yet, but it will be very soon. I am adopted, however, so I only have maternal lineage data of mother having left Ireland to come to Canada with her parents out of Cork Co.

I have done a considerable amount of etymological surname researching. Having its profound effect, not to mention the X marks the spot of the centromeres and telomeres, cromatid, and associated mythical and etymological parallels. Mind your P's and Q's as meaning many things, not the least of which referring to measuring the q arm and p arm of the chromosomes to determine length of the fuse or whick to calculate age on DNA level, but more importantly how many more times it will be able to replicate without degradation.

I tried the MyHeritage DNA and African Ancestry DNA, but didn't find much of a match between the two, so I'm not sure which one is MOST accurate. I'm waiting on my results from Ancestry to see if it will help clarify. Have you done the African Ancestry DNA test or have studied it to know how accurate it is?

I would much rather deal with a single segment match of 23 cMs than a match with a total of 70 cMs made up of 12 little segments with a largest of 12.
My maternal great grandfather was adopted. We only know his birth name was “Lorenzo”. Any idea where to begin when trying to identify his ethnic background? I did 23andMe but the results don’t seem to clearly represent what I do certainly know about my ancestors as it was closely tracked in my family.

I was able to find Y chromosome cousins that I share a common ancestor with going back over 300 years, three of them! I actually have two paternal ancestors from this common ancestor. 😐

Before anyone would recommend Living DNA, think twice. At least I know is that they are *NOT* good for outside UK but they claim to be the best for UK only ancestry.
I did 23andMe and it blew my mind! I never knew my father but I found my half brother!! I have thousands of “cousins”! Not really….it’s like your ancestors. I uploaded my raw data to GedMatch and it further broke down my ethnicities. Traced back to Saudi Arabia, Iran and east Africa. And the most amazing thing is it showed my Natufian ancestry!! The Natufians are the original people from Africa!! I love the health testing as well! It was spot on with what I’ve been diagnosed with. All fascinating!!

I'm H1h on my maternal haplogroup. Since it says H1 dates to 10,000 and H1h to 7,500 years ago... this means we're clearly related some point between 10,000 - 7,500 years ago 👍. How goes it, Cuz? 😆 (I call all my cousins Cuz, there's a lot of them lol)
