New Year's Day has rich and long history of its existence. According to some reports that is the ancientest holiday (first mentions are dated to the third millenium BC). Each nation had its own traditions of celebration and dates of the starting of the year which were changing during the time.
This video will show how Europe introdused the single date of January 1 as the beginning of the year.
Happy New Year and have a pleasant viewing!!
    Music:
    1. We Wish You a Merry Christmas
    2. Silent Night
    3. Deck the Halls

Really good video, although I think choosing March 1st makes more sense. Since that is regarded as the first day of spring, which symbolizes rebirth and a new beginning for nature. And also, September becomes the 7th month, October the 8th, November the 9th and December the 10th. Which also corresponds to their actual meanings.

I have to agree, i like March 1st as new year’s. The names of September to December would correlate to their numerical order; having new year’s at a seasonal boundary makes more sense to me (January 1 is arbitrarily 10 days after the astronomical solstice, while March 1 is close to a meterological season change in both hemispheres); and leap days would be at the end of the final month of the year rather than the 2nd month.

I think there is some confusion with the Julian and Gregorian calendar. In the 16th through the 18th century there is no differentiation when Western countries shift calendars, but in the 19th centuries appesars the 14th January as new years day in Greece and other Orthodox countries. (btw in the 19th century should be 13th of January). Additionally, I don't make sure but the official calendar of Morocco is the Gregorian calendar, so new year is on the 1st of January.
People those days were just mad! Imagine changing the year in the middle of a month! 24/12/1511 then 25/12/1512!

Excellent video, but I have a little doubt, it’s true that England and later Great Britain followed the annunciation date to start the year until 1752, but I’m not sure if it was the case between 1647 and 1660, during that period of time the parlamentarians established their rule and abolished the monarchy, and their project of a protestant puritan nation lead them to abolish christmas, as they considered it a catholic and heretic celebration, pointing out that the biblical sources indicated that Jesus was born in spring. That being said, if the nativity date was considered heretic, logically the annunciation date would have been as well, therefore it makes no sense to keep it as the start of a New Year.

In Serbia we are still celebrating our new year on 14. January, as well as our old calendar (kolodar) with the year 7531.

You seem to have messed up the Gregorian / Julian Calendar in the end. By this logic Russia should also be 14th of January before 1917. Best not show this at all, as the "14th of January" nations consider the 14th to be 1st of January.

The Ottoman Empire used the Iranian new year for anything other than religious purposes, the Islamic calendar being worthless at announcing the seasons (Joumada isn't necessarily in the winter, Rabi' isn't in the spring, etc). Even Ramadan comes from the word (الرمضاء), meaning the intense heat and is supposed to be a summer month.
