I'm surprised it isn't on by default, which is mostly because of some bugs (there's one instance where you can't open stashes inside/across a bush), but for a game that demands a lot more tactical movement and careful execution, to exercise using the most abundant and cheapest camouflage in the Zone, they don't let you start off the modpack with it.
Sometimes, it's not even as viable in active combat situations since i've had countless times dying to grenades inside bushes lmao, so it's pretty balanced too.

Worth pointing out and Lev points it out himself: if you don’t like something about GAMMA, you can alter and configure more to your liking. I too dislike that every gun you find is held together by the sheer will of John Moses Browning himself, so instead I upped the condition values in the mod configuration menu in the in-game menu so that one’s an easy fix.
The default doesn’t make sense either. A Master Stalker, a seasoned resident of the zone, having anything besides guns and gear in the best shape possible is absurd! Crank those numbers up! And for that matter, turn on debug mode. Spawn in the guns and gear you want. Life’s too short to not have fun

Tbh making enemies having good guns and good armors makes the progression way too fast. In 1 or 2 hours you can be set for the endgame. It’s about mastering the game mechanics. People having troubles repairing guns and armors just don’t understand the game mechanics. Everything is explained in the PDA. But indeed, you can tweak and play the game the way you like. Just don’t come up with stupid arguments like « it makes no sense / it’s not realistic ». You don’t like it, fair enough.

To be honest it sounds like you would prefer the base game S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly, your able to buy guns/armour from traders reducing the need to repair them until you get ones you like. GAMMA was deisgned to make anomaly harder for people that have played it for years and needed to freshen it up, it compiles the most used and beloved mods together and changes a few things around to make it harder (the storyline is basically the same but technically the events of GAMMA take place about 40 years [I think] after the events of anomaly)

    • @nickq8093
      @nickq8093 3 месяца назад +103

gamma's main design intent was actually specifically around the gear progression.
base anomaly's progression sucks. most people just end up farming tasks in the south for rep and cash then buy the best gear available. There's nothing to actually incentivize heading north and engaging more dangerous enemies.
gamma's weapon and armor repair is intended to incentivise gradually progressing north in search of better toolkits, weapons and armor, while mostly preventing the player from skipping progression by just merc'ing some dude with a fancy gun or armor.
also the events of gamma are... literally the events of base anomaly, it's not a lore overhaul.

  • @spiderluvshalo
    @spiderluvshalo 3 месяца назад +82

The weapon repair kit doesn't use any of it's limited uses if you are replacing the parts with parts you already have (only if you replace a part you don't have). You just have to have the repair kit to do so. That only really applies to the barrel of a gun though as every other part can be removed/replaced without a repair kit. That means if you find a gun with a cleanable barrel (>60%) you can use the cleaning kit of the corresponding class to clean the barrel to 100% and replace the other parts manually without a repair kit. Knowing how the weapon/armor repair and crafting systems work is pretty integral to enjoying Gamma and there are plenty of guides out there. I do hope you give it another shot as there is a pretty solid progression system, but it doesn't feel like there is one if you don't make it past the very first part of it. On the off chance you do try it again, the biggest piece of advice I could give is to just not use a weapon if it has a high chance of jamming (most of those have shit barrels anyways and won't do much damage). You might have to stick with your starting pistol or shotgun for quite a while

@@justusbladetooth Vanilla Anomaly is like, farm task while sleeping, get artefacts from the nearby fields and sell them, buy gear, done. In just a few hours you can easily get the best gear in the game while abusing the game mechanics. GAMMA is the culmination of people who played vanilla Anomaly for hundreds and hundreds of hours, making all gameplay systems sensical (from a gameplay perspective) and uncheesable. Sure a newbie might like Anomaly more, but he will quickly see the wrongs of Anomaly systems and GAMMA fixes almost all of them in its own way. Once you get into the logic of GAMMA it's hard to go back the other way around because of how rewarding the GAMMA systems are. But it's not for everyone, that's for sure.

    • @justusbladetooth

@@grok_gamma Respectfully? If you're going for 'meta gaming optimal strategy' then technically you're correct, but even then. You forget you need to do jobs to get reputation most of which cannot be farmed; unless you want to try fighting Monolith with basic jackets, and shotguns. Artefacts also are valuable but unless you take the risk to go to the scientists you'll be making chump change on the very common junk ones you'll see with a basic tier detector. I genuinely don't get the point of taking an already fiddly and crap repair system and making it MORE complicated; I already hated engaging with it so much I would rather get scalped by a merchant than mess with it.
Anomaly by default already had a fairly solid progression curve designed to get you engaged with the mechanics of the game as well as the optional story and faction paths to direct you around. So a lot of GAMMA's tweaks feel like solutions in search a problem, outside of the deep immersion stuff like animations.
You can still LIKE the mod, don't misunderstand me here: but calling it "THE" Anomaly experience is pure hubris IMO. Just my two cents.

The world exists despite you, and while your actions might play a small part in what happens in it, your death is ultimately inconsequential. The immersion factor from this is unparalleled--you feel like you're part of the world, not beyond it.
All these modpacks just add on top of that stellar basis. Unfortunately there's only so much these devs can do to fix the absolute jank that is the base game, and most modpacks followed MISERY where they just heap on more unnecessarily complex systems without considering if they SHOULD do it.

I remember doing the Renegades elimination task. It was a three part mission, first one took place at the that stilts house in the swamp. Second was at the junction of Rookie village and Swamp and the last one was in a Village near the Electric Anomaly fields. And I did them as Clear Sky. Mind you Renegades hate Clear Sky more than free Stalkers. The first part I attempted 13 times, shut down the game because after 3 hours of continuous gameplay the inventory starts to bug out, and cried myself to sleep. The next day I attempted it a mere 8 times, succeeding at last, only getting a sporting shotgun which was assembled out of two similar ones because one had better durability and one had better parts. 2nd part was much easier. In that we actually get some backup by our guys, but they get butchered instantly. I had to use an artifact to get through it which stunned the enemy if they struck you. Got an AKS 74 U out of it. Third one just made me become partial Jesus as it had a radioactive Lake. So I smoked a ciggy, and ran over the lake to get into the encampment only to do what I had done in the second part of the mission. The total reward of this task is 12k roubles, a better A1 medkit (Blue cheese kit), and some rep. So yeah it was fun.
Remember, the mission might kick your nuts out of your mouth, but when its done all the loot is yours till you start the next one. Oh and being overweight with loot kills you. So try to find a remember an empty stash. Sorry for the long rant.

Firstly id like to say, Thankyou for trying it! And it's entirely reasonable why you dont like it. The gun repair mechanic is complicated contrived and only explained through a PDA or youtube.
The whole "NPC's using guns fine but when i use it, its broke as shit" IS BULLSHIT, I agree personally with most of what you've said.
Personally? I love the repair system, I did *NOT* initially but now within 1-3 in game days i can get up to advanced tools with a fully functioning AK. There *is* an element of skill to it in knowing what items to use for what and how to stretch all your meds, repair kits, ammo n everything as far as you can. And I LOVE that. But not everyone *will* grow to like it, most people dont like it intially, some like it after they learn it. Not everyone will.
I've dumped hundreds of hours into this game, and to be clear i do make small tweaks to the modpack to make it feel better. Which i feel is one of the big advantages it has. Dont like that you cant buy guns of traders? *Theres 1 mod to turn off to add them back*. I wouldn't forget about just stalker anomaly itself, GAMMA is an incredibly specific overly hardcore offshoot of anomaly, if you dont like GAMMA you may like anomaly. They are borderline entirely different games. Stalker GAMMA is the biggest one because it blew up, and admittedly for the gameplay it tries to give, it does it well. But alot of people like you, dont like that and thats *FINE*.
Also alot of people say "go to the GAMMA discord if you have issues" which is partially true, but uh- (and i hope i dont get in trouble for saying this) unironically some of the people on there are kinda toxic. Some of the MAIN people i mean, long story short i got my entire save soft-locked at one point because i didnt understand how a quest worked. Regardless of what i did or how i did it, because i failed the quest and didnt reload a save, it soft-locked my ENTIRE campaign quest series thingy. The ONLY way i could fix it was by going back to a save 30 hours ago. That. Is bullshit. No game should have any way to soft-lock you out of content unintentionally, if it's a "you failed you dont get to do this quest" it'd be different. Thats not what this was.
I asked people on the discord about it and got bombarded with "get good, skill issue" and i said "skill issue on the game soft-locking me out of the rest of the game? Because a quest timer doesnt reset?" and they said "yeah, skill issue we aint gonn fix it". Unironically I dont really like most of the stalker GAMMA community. The save lock issue hasnt been the only thing, and even some of the main stalker content creators have talked about how...... hostile and gate-keepy and toxic they can be.
If you wanna enjoy stalker gamma, use the discord for technical/installation issues only, modify the GAMMA modpack if you dont enjoy the base game. Understand that some of the mechanics LIKE game's like Tarkov, you might grow to like even if you intially dislike them (not everyone will tho). And always remember that stalker anomaly....... exists? and there are other modpack offshoots of it that are less extreme?

    • @mrbubbity7496
      @mrbubbity7496 3 месяца назад +3

If anyone want's to know the soft lock i encountered was this: I had to go into a "dungeon" to do a quest and disable a machine inside of it, upon entering a timer poped up at the top of the screen. Saying I had 20 minutes to do it, I had never done this dungeon, i didnt know how long it was or what way to go. So naturally I failed. At one point I got a cool gun from someone in the dungeon and thought "huh, what if i go and repair this and come back later when i have more gear?" So i left the dungeon (which it allowed me to) and repaired the gun and did 10-20 hours of gameplay. Came back only to find out that the timer for the dungeon, DOES NOT RESET.
That is correct, if you do part of the dungeon, leave and come back. The timer has not reset. Meaning you can soft-lock yourself with 3 seconds on the timer like i did. Also meaning that the effective way to "leave the dungeon and try again later" is to reload a fucking save and time travel, rather than walking like a normal human being. Even if you wanted it to work like this you'd presumably warn the player before entering "you may not leave after you enter" and remove the exit prompt from the INSIDE of said dungeon. But no, there are zero safety measures to stop the player from soft-locking themselves. This isnt even a bug it's just an oversight from stalker anomaly.
This is terrible design, and this for the record is what the discord told me was a "skill issue". And then proceeded to talk about how that's how it's always been so it's how it always SHOULD be. I dont *care* if you cant leave the dungeon after starting it, that's fine plenty of games do that. Yknow what games DONT do? Allow you to leave and not reset the timer meaning that you can soft-lock yourself. Even for the intended experience there is zero downside to adding a warning before entering, and removing the exit prompt. It gives the intended experience, warns the ignorant players about it, and stops them from soft locking themselves- that is incredibly easy and the fact that the discord tells me (and other's who regularly ask about this in the discord apparently) that it's a skill issue says alot about the community.
PS: If any of the people reading this are ON the gamma discord, this isn't an attack, just some of the take's ive gotten from the server are...... with respect, fucking stupid. When have games *ever* done shit like what that dungeon does to soft-lock you and it be a "good" thing.

@@mrbubbity7496 am a tester/modder for gamma. Literally didn't know about this issue LOL.
so that would be a carryover from base anomaly, and is probably something we should address with the switch from fighting through monos on the way out to fighting them on the way in, as you're more likely to find incentive to leave as you fight your way in.
i'm not sure on the feasibility of deactivating and reactivating the transition or resetting the timer. Xray engine is er... not straightforward in adjusting those sorta things and we aren't the base anomaly devs, if something is hardcoded we do not have access to tweak it.

See this is one of the reasons why we always say you should start with the 3 main games first straight from steam then try vanilla Stalker Anomaly a bit, maybe play one or two more mods and then try Gamma. The thing with STALKER mods and modpacks is that they all kinda just assume you have played the mainline games and know the basic gameplay loop of them hence their ''tutorials'' are kinda hard.

A really good video. And yes, I'm one of the specific people that GAMMA appeals to. You have to work and be smart to stay alive in GAMMA, it's a pain in the ass and that's why I love it so much. Any tangible progression either it be crafting a new backpack, fixing up an AK, or finally having access to a proper toolkit is a big deal and it feels so good. So many games these days have you chase after lofty goals and bombard you with unlocks and player power that trivializes difficulty. GAMMA pulls me back and makes me appreciate the daily struggle and achievements again. Being forced to take it slow and walk around the zone (with amazing atmosphere and background music) put me in a calm and meditated state that no other game does.

A good way to "prepare" yourself for GAMMA is to do the following:
    1. Play in this order: Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call of Prypiat, Anomaly, Anomaly with different mods (toy a lot with different mods so you learn how they behave in-game), then GAMMA
    2. Do a first playthrough as a Loner at a lower difficulty, just so the game doesn't feel as punishing and slow. Use the opportunity to understand how the mod menu works, as some settings require you to start a new game (if you don't do so, your game may start crashing a lot - it's an engine limitation)
    3. Feeling cozy in-game? Bump up the mutant/enemy population gradually
    4. Finish at least the "Lost in the Zone" questline. Then, create a new savefile at highest difficulty and thoughest progression. Also check out for any new mods that might interest you

In SoC and CS enemies have less grenade range on easier difficulties.

I had so much fun tackling that exact camp of renegades, I had nothing but a makarov with like 20 bullets and a bandage and I managed to slowly but surely pick them out a couple at a time, when they locked onto me I would run like hell to the clear sky base, outside of it were a couple houses I used as cover and to run around when they tried to flank me, I died like 6 times doing all this song and dance but eventually killed some of them, sold their loot and got more ammo and meds so I could keep thinning them out until eventually raiding the 2 guys left in the base, the loot was great, even got a cool gun that looked kinda like an aug that had a functional barrel I stashed to repair eventually
The game IS brutal but it pushes you to be better and create stories of every single little encounter, most people probably know him but Drewski really showcases these aspects of GAMMA, no hate on anyone who doesn't like it tho, it is very niche but it's also freaking FREE so trying it out to see if it's your next obsession doesn't hurt, if anything the atmosphere is worth giving it a shot

In addition, the best way to repair a weapon is to get a weapon which has a barrel with 60% condition or above, then you simply field strip all the parts which are below 60% and then u repair it using a repair kit for the gun type (the cheap one that all the traders have at the start it should cost somewhere around 2k-5k depending on the weapon type)

This video can be summed up by: newbie started GAMMA in Hard Survivalist and simply got handled. Play in Easy Tourist, read your PDA guide as mentioned when spawning the first time. The game is *not* made so you can directly loot and use other enemies gear, because it would basically make you geared up in 30 minutes. And Hard Survivalist progression requires that you know ALL the game mechanics. In Easy Tourist, everything is made simpler so that you can discover the game systems.
The repair system is easy in the sense that you just need a repair kit, right click gun, maintain, replace parts, done. You don't need to find all the parts, it consumes uses of the expensives repair kits though so it's more of a joker. Good parts naturally come while playing, just press Left Alt to auto loot the enemies, it will strip the green parts automatically.
You can swap parts by drag and dropping parts on a gun, you don't need a repair kit for that, but it consumes a bit of the gun condition.
Swapping parts in the bench with a repair kit doesn't consume repair kit uses, and it doesn't consume gun condition upon doing so (cleaner than the field swap).
Parts in green can be cleaned while inside the gun, as stated by the cleaning kit description... Loot a gun with a green barrel, it will be prestine in no time. By the end of day 1 you can have a repaired AK without having any repair kit nor any toolkit.
To get repair kits you need toolkits that you will naturally find by looting rare stashes (yellow ones) which you get naturally by doing tasks. Early on most pistols and SMGs can be repaired. You can buy SMG rounds for cheap and the A type repair kit is only 13k roubles. SMGs easily kill most enemies in 1 or 2 headshots down south. Some are tankier and need AP rounds, which you can also buy. Seeing that you have 30k roubles early on also shows something symptomatic of newbies: keeping for *whatever*. Roubles don't make you survive, ammo, better gear and healings do. Early on you should usually end up with 17 roubles in your pocket every time you visit an allied base by slowly building up your supplies.
About your SVU comment: if you looted it in usable condition, you could have used it until the end of the game and one shotting most enemies with the correct ammo. Even so, you can be lucky and find such a gun with a green barrel and use it.
Healing system ? Bandage + Yadulin = done. During fight bandages and medkits usually give you enough temp HP to hold on during the fights, it just puts pressure on you to not stay idle for too long and camping (the temp HP vanishes and you need to reapply a bandage to have limb temp HP again to not suffer from the many debuffs).
But again, all your issues are coming up from:
    1) Playing in Hard Survivalist.
    2) Not learning the game mechanics (in game tutorials will be made at some point, meanwhile the PDA is a good source of information).

amazing video, i really loved this style your going with, some tips for those who are interested but fear you can never play stalker because its too hard:
    - you can always get another modpack, GAMMA is meant to be a hardcore gun salvaging mod pack, most other packs have traders sell guns at good condition
    - if you want a more tarkov-esc modpack you should try (Stalker: Escape from Pripyat), it is still hard ill admit but its a lot more tarkovy and a tiny bit less hard on the guns
    - as Levi himself mentioned you can always enable and disable mods but you gotta know what your doing otherwise issues may arise
    - I also recommend you play base stalker anomaly before adding any modpacks like GAMMA, base anomaly has gun trading etc and isnt a hardcore experience like GAMMA
i loved the video and hope you give stalker another shot one day, maybe a different modpack or base anomaly, base stalker anomaly is all of the good with barely any of the bads you mentioned, amazing video and i hope you do more in this style, awesome job.

As others have probably said: repair kits for guns do not decrease their uses when you have the weapon parts you need. The uses go down when you repair the gun durability or replace a part with a pristine one made from thin air, using one use per part

Honestly, as miserable as it is, I love it. Games have become so easy over time to cater to the masses, I am just happy to see the opposite for once. No colorful numbers and letters flashing on your screen to tell you how amazing you are for simply picking something up. Just suffering which makes it very rewarding.

What is good is, at least for guns, I forgot where it was, but somewhere in the settings, you can set minimum and maximum durability of weapons

Jumping straight into Stalker through GAMMA was never going to end well lol. I agree with you that the constant broken weapon drops tilt the game progression towards the ridiculous. You can tweak the weapon drop condition in the options if you know where to look. Once you become familiar with the systems though building up your own weapons becomes a major appeal and sense of achievement in the game. This ain't Metro, this is Stalker and both of them are fantastic in their own ways.

I was suspecting that your points would be the usual "game hard! :(" but nah you have very valid points. This mod doesn't respect our time whatsoever and is what eventually made me put it down too. You can only dismantle so many guns before it gets to be a bit much. Well made video and I can't wait for S2 either.

I had finished my Invictus playthrough with a merc it wasn't easy at all with everything being at 30% durability and most advanced armor being locked by expert tools, most but not all. And since I got HOWA 20 and best medium suit Mercenaries Ace Scientific suit around 15 hours mark I'd set for success until I came to Prypiat' and get like 2-3 fps and chimera just came inside the buidling I barely was able to jump out of a balcony on roof.

What they don't tell you in any of the guides or readmes for the game is that you just have to get higher reputation and vendors will sell guns and better armor. Also certain quests require you to kill"master" stalkers which have high durability and good condition armor and weapons, which is what I usually do to find a decent weapon start of game.

the thing is, after getting over all the pain, if you make the game "easy" it's not as interesting anymore. It's a scavenger game, if you find a brand new gun all the time, and jump straight to top tier equipment, it's not the same anymore. Maybe I'm brainrotted by it but i really like having to be aware of what i have working and what is to be used after i progress the parts. yes some of the progress could be better, like the advanced/expert tools that are actually a pain in the butt. But mods are there to solve the issue too. Just grab some extra stuff on top of gamma and are good to go

I finished all 3 GAMMA questlines, planning to do an invictus run some time in the future, worth mentioning that i'm playing various STALKER games from like the age of 10.
I personally like the crafting system, but i upped the starting numbers for condition and item drops so that farming like 40 military textile isn't THAT tedious.
Also Exo's dropping chance is absoulutely ridiculous, that really needs a change no matter what's your other config is like.
Also, some people do not seem to get that: try to get fun.

As someone who has rather extensive personal experience in both Anomaly and Gamma, I think Gamma is the more well developed and in depth experience, but I honestly had a lot more fun with base Anomaly. If you haven't tried it, you'd probably find it overall a lot less frustrating, especially since you can actually buy shit like guns from vendors. You can maybe add some of your own mods, but even baseline Anomaly is a blast of an experience. Especially as someone who enjoys Tarkov, Metro, etc.

Mate, nobody's angry, throughout the video i was just nodding and saying "yeah, yeah" the mod is ball busting if you go at it blindly, but it is very fun if you get a hold of it, similarly the way tarkov works(or at least should work) cool video

These kinds of critiques are interesting to me, because I love the progression system and the repair-to-use mechanics. If I could just buy whatever gun or armor I wanted from traders, there'd be no satisfaction in acquiring it. I like that you need to go and find these better guns in the world, either stashed away or on a corpse, haul them back to your bench, and patch it into useable condition.

The systems in place are put there to keep you from rushing the game, however, I do get it. It took me 10 hours to finally get a really good shotgun, and pistols with AP are pretty much going to be your STALKER killers for awhile until you can get something basic like an SKS working. They really try to limit how quickly you can get assault rifles. Sometimes, you can get working weapons from people who give you quests like transporting them somewhere. My main issue with the game is that you pretty much have to remove the grass because enemies will just laser beam you through any visual cover. If it's not a solid wall, they will shoot you through it without hesitation. It's that classic AI of they already have their guns trained on you through the wall, you just need to expose a pixel for them to start blasting.

STALKER GAMMA caters to people who are into trains and Sonic the Hedgehog. That said, it was one of my favorite gaming experiences and requires a lot of research to learn how the hell to actually play the game. And yes, that pump station fight in the swamp was some weapon grade malarkey.

so to add context to why gamma is like it is, especially in regards to armor and weapon condition when looted + traders not selling guns/armor:
base anomaly's progression is kinda trash, you basically just stay in the south of the zone until you've farmed enough money and rep to buy the best gear and then you head north to do actually interesting things and fight dangerous things.
Grok (gamma's creator) didn't like this, and so gamma is designed with the intent that you have a gameplay loop of get toolkits + guns/armor -> repair equipment -> move further north in search of further toolkits + armor/weapon upgrades. broken guns aren't intended to be used, at least not as anything more than last resort. they jam every 2nd shot, deal vastly less damage, struggle to penetrate printer paper and generally just are detrimental to try use in a fight. Buckshot may be god's finger against mutant but if you got a 2% barrel then 9mm makarov HP from your starting pistol is gonna hit harder.
also, counterintuitively the two most common starting areas people go for (cordon and swamps)... are kinda trash starting locations, swamps especially fools you into thinking the little mini CS questline is a beginner thing when it *REALLY* isn't. don't do those tasks till you have a good rifle, preferably with a magnified optic. the cover around those areas are shit and the enemies aren't particularly easy.
Tho that bits not actually hugely on gamma. those are base anomaly things lol. Messing with quests is a bit nightmarish with the xray engine.

Two things to massively increase your enjoyment: Learn how to use repair kits (you don't have to consume a charge if you repair with the part at a bench) and learn crafting. You can craft a weapon repair kit for WAY cheaper than you can buy one, and dont have to worry about the trader's stock. And theres tons of other stuff you can craft, especially meds

So that you want in Gamma is: find gun with good barrel (60%+) and change other parts (strip them from similar guns) to better parts (60%+ also), so you don't need weapon repair kit at all. And then just spray some weapon oil on iut and you're good.

Life hack: if you are tired of having shit weapons upon drop you can actually change the setting from the pause menu so that loot drops in better quality and you can adjust the percentages to however you like. I have mine set to where rookie stalkers will have slightly damaged loot and on occasion drop some useless shit but it’s highly unlikely, versus master stalkers and professionals have pristine equipment. This makes for a more fair and enjoyable experience as now you can swap your weapon parts with that of a fallen enemy’s. Bolt broken? Maybe Slava Booze, the bandit I just shot in the face has one on his body. It still is challenging without sacrificing a very important aspect of the game which was designed ENTIRELY to make you cry
