    "A can feel that shit". That sums it up, perfectly. Some songs have a soul, not all songs, but some do. This song is like, a condensed message in the first two lines, it says more in the opening, than some songs could never say. It's a masterpiece, and you can "feel that shit", because that shit, is real, it's Ashcroft pouring his heart out. This to me, also sounds very English, when i hear this, it makes me think of England, and it's culture and beauty encapsulated, which is strange, as I am from Scotland, haha!! This, is Britpop at it's finest. Kudos to you for receiving it, loud and clear

    The Verve had been around for 8 years, before they finally hit it big with this song and the album "Urban Hymns" in 1997. The upbeat, halcyon days of Britpop and just come to an upbrupt collapse in 1997, and this song tapped into a darker mood in post-Cool Britannia.

    This song makes me think of My Sister (AKA Fozzybear), who we lost in 2015 due to complications related to her Diabetes.
    The local health trust kept giving her synthetic Human insulin which her body just rejected, this despite big red letters on her medical note stating "Do NOT prescribe Human Insulin, Bovine/Porcine only"
    Despite this they refused to allow her to use her own insulin and always gave her the synthetic human variant without her or our knowledge..
    She found out about this and started a claim as she'd suffered massive problems in every visit to hospital for over 20 years, any overnight stay lead to weeks or months there as her blood sugar would tank or be through the roof...
    She was awarded £250,000 in compensation but never got the chance to spend it as she passed away before the funds cleared into her bank...
    This song was a favorite of hers, she even stole my copy of their album Urban Hymns which I didn't get back till her passing, I still have that same CD to this day...
    For 2 years I felt just like this video, nothing mattered, I didn't care anymore, "Life" had robbed me of someone with so much zest for life. Just gone in seconds..
    It STILL HURTS to listen to but also has a special place in my heart for the memories of her inexhaustible spirit and joy of life it brings back, particularly this song, and others on the album. Sonnet, One day, Space and time, Catching the butterfly and When the drugs don't work...
    Miss you Fozzybear.... Always will... In the words of Stephen, the mad Irishman from Braveheart "I'll see you after..." sigh....

    The Verve are English. The video was filmed on Hoxton High Street in London. The song samples Rolling Stones. This was probably their most famous hit, but they also hit with The Drugs Don’t Work. The lead singer Richard Ashcroft also had a couple of decent solo albums.

    • @mg5347
      @mg5347 4 года назад

      Also the Verve made no money from this song because the rolling stones took them to court because they thought the sample wouldn't be so prominent in the song and ended up taking all the royalties

    So this song was based on a Rolling Stones song, or an orchestral cover of a Stones song called "The Last Time". Jagger and Richards claimed writing credits and all the royalties went to the Stones former manager. So they made zero dollars from this massive hit until 2019 when Jagger and Richards gave them publishing rights.
