I'd imagine that the hard part in start of this project is just waiting for feedback so you can start. I'm very curious to see what the popular suggestions are, and what Dustin will do to form that into something workable - especially since he's using what he has and trying not to buy a lot. A very cool, think on the spot sort of project, I think.
Love the ideas for the bale house! I would take another of those structures and build an outhouse - you HAVE to get tired of doing your bidness in the woods all the time. About the oak tree - depends on the species, but in my neighborhood we have a Bur Oak about that size which is roughly 450 years old.
I can hardly wait either for a vid on a small cob house.
Another bushcrafter used the domed shaped front 'acrylic window' from the door of a clothes dryer as a window in one of his builds; since you're looking for low cost and free.
Ask the owner if he minds you bringing carrots and apples as treats for the horses. You need to become really good friends with them.
Any seasoned builder would tell you: if you find any rot in the roof supports, replace it all.
With all that you are planning, and the potential need to replace the roof structural poles.... I'm going to suggest you look at the Roof Support system of a Navajo Hogan House. It is very similar to the round house, but it is started with a square structure for the roof- which you already have. You would need to build a secondary wall to support the roof timbers, that is only Uprights in the ground and logs conneceted to the tops... like a horse hitching post. That secondary wall would be about the height of two hay bails stacked. Then the roof timbers extend down as far as you want for that porch.
The pros to this: very simple construction methods. Far more support for any roofing material you choose. It can be easily extended out for the porch.
The Cons: it will take a boat load of timbers, but you can adjust the size of them, to suit your thatching.

I would use straw bales rather than hay: your horse will be more inclined to eat hay and to pull the bales apart. Yes to a fireplace: why not make a traditional brick fireplace with a raised hearth for convenient cooking? Traditional German kitchens have this feature and it would be quite different for you. I saw an interesting idea recently: a fella built a chimney stack and the surrounded it wqith a wall, leaving space for a lot of sand to be poured between the two. That made a great thermal mass. Your thatched roof needs a steep pitch and so will any veranda you build. I would skip the veranda or roof one with a different material. Architectural experience suggests that shallow decks are not used: they need space for furnishings and for walking around or putting ones legs out. Two meters or a bit more would be the minimum depth. Bring an apple or a carrot each day and make friends with the horse. They are not eager to kick you but they need to be reassured about YOU specifically.
This sounds lovely! Would a thatched roof be too heavy? I am an old woman, and don't really know anything except what you have taught me. That is why I ask. I can see you making "comphy" chairs to go with this dream place. I am so excited to watch this come to fruition!

If you are genuinely thinking eco, how about a thermal mass stove? I see so many tent stoves which need feeding every hour or so. Mud/clay, old storage heating bricks, stones, just old bricks. If you are going to use high R value insulation (straw bales) be interesting to see if your heat source is also 'green'.
Definitely need a heat and cooking source, and water collection!!! The rest is luxury, lol food water shelter!! I can't wait to see

As Far as the roof would say go Ash Poles. Roofing Material. If Thatch is WAY too expensive go with the other alternative go sawd. or even moss. with insulating layer.
by the time you look over your shoulder to see a kick it will to late and over if it happens. but be careful anyways.

solar panels, rainwater collection, a small stove wood stove, maybe a windmill for a secondary energy collection. I like your idea of the Reed's platform Off the floor I like the idea of the window You do want to keep ventilation in there good If the frame structure can hold it you can probably put in hammocks to sleep in that way you don't have to worry about mattresses getting damp and molding because the hammocks you can always take down and wash them And dry them air dry them Wooden cook stove would be good because you can also get heat out of it and you can cook on it we even have an outdoor shower From the collected rain water which in the summertime it'll get nice and warm if you use it hold it in a black canvas bag I'm going to be have to be large cannabis bag all in several gallons what you could use a barrel to collect the rainwater We want to be covered so that those bugs and leaves and stuff don't get into it no mosquitoes. maybe plant a little vegetable garden around the area with tomatoes Hot peppers and eggplants potatoes do you know all those plants are related tomatoes peppers eggplants and potatoes are all related go figure He grows some corn Grow some beans and squash Now you want to do that via Native American way which is you plant the corn plant and you plant the beans around the corn plant it'll grow up and climb up the corn and then the squash plays around that which will keep up keep the weeds down and you can make succotash which is like pumpkin or squash corn and beans we've really grow peas too the regular green kind and or snow peas which are really good. that give unified ideas to have fun with?

Sounds like a great project. It will be very interesting to see what you do with that frame. It's also cool to see you striking out in a slightly different direction.

Awesome! I'd put the hay/straw between the posts for strength and coverage from the weather; you really don't want it getting wet. Stone or brick fireplace sounds great. Make sure to have a good thermal barrier between it and the walls. Amber needs to slow down with those horses. They instinctively know how to kill dogs from fighting wolves in the past. As long as she slows down and lets them check her out they'll be ok with her and may even play with her. That dark horse is a bay, the light ones looked like palominos. At least the closest one.

Quick fix galvanized lapping on roof and tounge and groove flooring for the walls
You said most of it. I would definitely have a raised floor, maybe about a foot off the ground, and a central Celtic stove for heating and cooking. I wouldn't recommend the straw bales on the ground, and huge invite for rodents and pests. Use the money for the thatch roof and overhang. Solid walls would be nice. Try collecting rough-hewn slabs of wood from a mill, the first cuts with bark from lumber. You can take the bark off after. Use the clay for clinching between the slats. Other than that, you have basically said what direction you are going. It will be a nice change to see you work for barter to get your supplies. We'll be watching!

If that horse stays in the hat lot with you, it will munch on the hay. It's what horses do.
Another thing, hay can be very flammable. A spark can land on it and smolder for weeks before a first could break out.

I do have to say that horses can sense your fear. That is not a good thing. There are a few things people should know before they move around, or interact, with horses. The owner of the horses should be able to fill you in.
As someone else said, it would be wise to get Amber to keep calm around the horses and slow down. Something else to consider is if a horse is spooked and they try to get away over a fence or through a fence and they get injured, they are a very large veterinary expense if their life can be saved. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to help.

YOu said you were going to raise the floor a half a meter, I think that may be high enough for a bench/couch from a rocket mass heater.
Hope Amber doesn't have the same habit my old dog used to have I hope Amber doesn't roll in the horse poop I actually have a dog that used to roll in goose poop all the time oh my god was that disgusting if we'd have to take him home and give him a bath and come out his fur is he had fur not oh he had hair not fur so it was even more disgusting trying to get all that stuff out of his hair portuguese water dug love to play in the water love to swim love to roll in the goose poop. I'm sure if there was horseman who were around he would roll on that too because he'd roll in the garden when we put down the cow manure and rake it into the garden and we're all on that at least that was dry you know the goose poop is disgustingly wet gunk.

the hay or straw bales are a good idear good insulation and clay /mud on the outside to water proof it, got to have a fire for cooking and heat. look forward to see what you do. was great to meet you at the bushcraft show.
