Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a 1992 platform game developed by Aspect and published by Sega for the Master System and Game Gear. The game is a sequel to the Master System/Game Gear title Sonic the Hedgehog, and follows the titular character Sonic as he attempts to rescue his friend Tails from the villainous Doctor Robotnik. The gameplay is based on traversing a number of levels while collecting gold rings and attacking enemies. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was met with critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the visuals and gameplay while criticizing the high difficulty. In 1993, a sequel, Sonic Chaos, was released.
As the game was released before the Sega Genesis version, it represents the debut of character Tails, who would became a mainstay in the series. Whilst the Master System version of the game was not initially released outside Europe and Brazil, it later become available worldwide following its release on the Wii's Virtual Console in 2008.
Story:
South Island has been peaceful since Dr. Robotnik's defeat. Sonic, bored, decides to go on a journey in search of other adventures. Upon his return, he is shocked to find the island nearly abandoned. The only clue as to where all his friends might have disappeared to was Tails being chased by Dr. Robotnik. Sonic chases after him, but he is too late to save Tails. Sonic finds out that he's been kidnapped by Dr. Robotnik and is being held in a place called Crystal Egg. The price for Tails' safe return are the 6 Chaos Emeralds, to be delivered to 6 new boss robots. Thus, Sonic goes on a quest to find the Chaos Emeralds and rescue Tails.

Thanks for watching!
The first fight, eggman saves Sonic from the lava to throw him into a monster's pit, then he threw himself to the monster, saving Sonic again. Genius XD
Allahu Akhbar? LOL
300 IQ right there
I am smort
It is funny, but the key thing to remember is that he doesn't want the emerald he presumes Sonic has melting in the lava. If he's killed on land, he can just collect it. If he falls into lava, not so easy... but yeah before I realised the motivation it seemed completely insane of Robotnik to do that, haha.
@@Torthrodhel but even then, maybe Sonic didn't collect the Emerald, and as proven by the bad endings, that he doesn't need all 6-7 of them to win the fight against Sonic, which is why Sonic needs to collect ALL of them.
wow this TAS guy is really good at speed running, he's good at like every game??
Every game that can be emulated
TAS is a computer inputting at frame perfect inputs. For more info, go to tasvideos.org
TAS could be a normal person playing with slow motion or save states for more accurate inputs
i know, its like that feat guy who appears in so many good songs

I swear i had this game as a child on the game gear and it was the most INFURIATING sonic game ive ever played
And HOLY crap, dont even get me started on Green Hills Zone act 3, the screen crunch made it nearly impossible
T-Man I’m with you brother, and the sky high emerald, and the gimmick mountain one which I never found back in the day...
I had it on Master System, lucky for me. Can't imagine what nightmares the screen crunch gives it. I was confused for the longest time why so many people hated the first boss, for instance. But once I figured what screen crunch does to that encounter, yeah I get it. Scrambled Egg must've been a nightmare!
Jane Ross it’s not only the screen crunch, I’ve just replayed it in an emulator and the freaking ball pattern is different, in the sms version I always got nice and low pattern while in the gg version sometimes that were high, another nightmare was sky high emerald, using the glider required a lot of guess game on the winds, scrambled egg was just fine, I paused a lot in the tube sections
@@fabiosemino2214 I'm thinking then, that the game was just a lot harder overall on GG so I am therefore misjudging which bits are the hard bits cos I never played that version. I wasn't much good at video games back then and I found Scrambled Egg quite tricky. Best music, though. That and the credits theme.
Green Hills 3 lost me a few lives too. The first two levels set such expectations, they're a bit like bonus levels in a way... and then suddenly all the rings are gone and everything's super blind.
Jane Ross yeah, quite punishing game overall, scrambled egg has a really nice music but apart from the obvious green hill I have a sweet spot for acqua lake
This makes the game look much easier than it actually is
Once you've memorised the whole game and learn that 1up boxes reappear after death, it's really easy.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 Still 1 of the harshest official Sonic games.
The one on the genesis for some reason is less confusing, but that’s just me.
@@aaronberns8485 do not worry, that's everybody
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 Honestly this but doing a no death run of any kind is psychotic
Me as a child, leaning the way I was pressing: "Ah, come on! How do you get this blasted glider to work? I can't quite reach the emerald and my time's running out!"
Speedrun in 2019: 13 seconds.
Speedrun without damage, acquired all chaos emeralds and saved Tails. It deserves a thousand likes. (=
your wish has been granted
For me It's The hardest classic Sonic game.
Sorry for bad english, im uruguayan
Your English is pretty good! But the “is” should be an “it’s” in this case.
@@MaskedChaos Thank You
Descuida, sho soy argentino
oh mira, un uruguayo
Wait a minute...Green Hills has same music from Sonic CD opening?
Yup!
Actually, you could say the opening song "you can do anything" from Sonic CD is a remix of green hills zone music. As the composer of Sonic CD worked on Sonic 2 8-bit music.
Mecha Green Hill Zone from Sonic Chaos is also a remix of that.
@@retrokiv5344 Very nice to know it. That's why both games have great music.
My favorite one is the ending theme.
@@Christoph8 indeed!
I I like how eggman saves sonic from falling into lava and sends the boss and then destroys him himself
I love the classic handheld runs. So creative.
But it isnt a handheld
This is the Master System version
Sonic 2 : jumping gets more speed
Sonic adventure (and 2): jumping gets more -speed- *friction and fuckin slows you down like its no one's bussiness*
Ha! omg that's so true
Honestly, I find the controls to be PAINFUL! The AI you used is very skilled
That's not how a TAS works.
Good ending with Tails (end music sonic shorts)
I like how you decided to flex your TAS skills at the first boss
Me and my ears: **Trying to enjoy the gaming WITH HEADPHONES**
The sfx: *So you have chosen death*
Sonic be going for dat chilli dog.
Yes! It's here!
27:26 nope, it was an edition
Robotnik saved sonic from lava.
I mean, it was Sega's decision.
@Question Mark Boi but robotnik saved sonic, when he didnt collect the emeralds (yet)
retrieving intact emerald from hostile robot > retrieving melted emerald from giant lava pit
robotnik just assumes sonic has the emerald (as he often does)
This Game Needs The Super / Hyper Sonic Mod Infused Into It
I need to see you do a Tails Adventure and a Tails Sky Patrol speedrun. Please & Thank You.
That score tally noise is incredibly ear grating.
I Love sonic and grate Gameplay. I never cant play a sonic game whith not getting a hit.
This almost makes the game look like it has proper momentum.
Nice work!
Also, what's going on with the sound emulation? It sounds a bit off
You probably had a game gear
In Aquatic lake or whatever you call it, for the boss, sonic has to fight a seal that grows it's nose? Well, that doesn't make sense.
If you play the boss less efficiently, it's blowing up a ball which it balances on its nose, and then headbutts it at you to do you damage. The trick when you first play is to figure out that the only way to damage it is if you land on top of it while it's blowing it up. This speedrun never hangs around long enough to let the projectile get to full size.
It's meant to be a take on a performing circus/zoo seal

[Applause]
wow...I hate to say this since Sonic was my first exposure to the Genesis but...I'm kinda glad I didn't play this version first...it doesn't seem bad but that score screen ouch>< i have my volume one step above mute and it was still painful!
thank goodness they didn't stick with that noise.
The first boss is so unfair.
It was fair except you playing the Game Gear version
@@asom6846 yeah it's really not that bad on the Master System, without the screen crunch.
The ease with which he got the emerald in Sky High!
What if Shiro did this except it was the bad ending, and added a custom dabbing pose in the credits to Sonic when Tails' constellation appears in the sky, so that Sonic is happy about Tails' death?
Maybe
Does anyone else think that the master system was a little bit more powerful than the nes?
Oh it definitely was. Not by a massive margin or anything, but enough to the point where a game like this was possible without additional hardware in the cartridge.
Master system was leaps ahead of the nes
The nes had better performance but the sms was better in every other way
I never fineshed this game. :(
18:47 You made a mistake not reaching the upper right floor from 18:48's point
edit: you can even fall down here to save more time 18:44, you only have to get one hit in order to enter the pipe
Fanily a good run of this game
GOOOOOOOOOOD YES GOOD
Who did the remix of Azure Lake at the end of the video?
Jamie Williamson idk
Speedrun without the time on the title. Makes sense.
To be honest the time does matter that much if it is a TAS but it does say Speedrun separate from TAS so I do not know
Where’s the thumbnail from? I don’t recall anything
Like that ever happening in the game
This game wasn't for kids
wouldn't it be better to avoid getting rights to there would be less time spent tallying?
those inputs after he gets to 1st boss at 2:31 onwards make no sense even in a TAS for master system, but game gear TAS you would need to constantly jump as well as predict what RNG will throw at you
cool
Hated this game as a kid
For me was as well.
Why?
It had way too many strange gimmicks and some of the level designs were piss poor and unfairly difficult.
I've played the game as a kid and it honestly wasn't any harder or easier than Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive which was also guilty of some bad design.
the level on 4:24 where the clouds look exactly the same but some are actual platforms is stupid and the level on 17:16 where you have to guess which pipe you need to go to without instant death are some of the examples of what i meant by rubbish level design in this game. And dont get me started on the gliders.
Hello Shiro paradox a question you know Sonic 1 from Master system remake has 3 versions the 1 the 2 and also the 3

And he clears the act and puts eggmans face instead of sonic 1:28
You play as evil Sonic in this game
True but not sonic.exe a different kind of evil sonic

26:36 is this from gameboy Advance?
DJ Alesio Cieri sounds a lot like something out of sonic advance 2
No. It's from Sega Master System.
this is the true ending theme from the first Sonic Advance. The uploader added the song because the credits music in Sonic 2 SMS ends and the last minute or so of credits has no audio.
They really did copy the Japanese sonic CD opening and put it in sonic 2 master system version and put in in Green hills zone.
Actually no. Sonic cd is remix of greem hills
That was the old me and you are right, 😐
Opening s2 sms theme similar to advance 3 route 99 theme
Would have been a lot quicker without all the time bonuses!
Sonic and me
Help! My ears!
I am pretty sure it could be done quicker.
I mean it is a TAS it should be the fastest way possible
@@rudyleon5366I'm pretty sure it still depends on the player and known tricks. because TAS speedrun, from what I know, is basically a player saving/loading whenever he decided that he's not satisfied with the result and think he can beat some part faster.
So, for example, you can see that he could technically break some capsules faster than he did (First couple he did barely touching them, while other ones he could definitely break when they were higher up, which would save maybe a second in total)
@@MilesProwerUA I think you are allowed to modify a TAS to acquire extra abilities you could say so like you can give Sonic a higher jump or run faster a TAS should detect what is the fastest route and way to glitch the game if possible or by passes to certain routes it does it by itself mostly
This is why I dislike speedrunning sometimes. This kind of straightforward run is better entertainment than someone finding glitches or shaving a second off. Chasing records gives weird priorities. I prefer something fun to watch.

I thought this was game gear
It IS for Game Gear
Game Gear version was a port of Master System version (or perhaps a parallel development; not sure). Main difference is GG had screen crunch, which also messed with the difficulty level significantly in some bits.
