OMG this was so helpful! I'm taking modern Japanese this semester and I've never studied anything about Japan. This is a great summary of the first chapter we had to read for the second day of class. Thank you!
I have to say, you do a fantastic job, and I am adding your channel to my list of "recommended" and suggesting your channel to fellow teachers. Keep it up!
Still... Oda Nobunaga is the most mind blowing daimyo at the time.... he didn't charged people with taxes so poor people could live under his rule He is my favorite daimyo
But Nobunaga Oda was responsible for destroying Buddhist temples across the country and massacred countless Buddhist monk warriors. Also his collaboration with the Portuguese Jesuits was all BULLSHIT, just for the Jesuit Missionaries to destroy Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Nobunaga Oda was quite an Asshole to collaborate with the European fools for Portuguese colonialism on Japan. I hate Nobunaga!
Man I feel like playing Shogun 2 in this order now. Rise of the Samurai: As the Minamoto. Vanilla: As the Tokugawa. Fall of the Samurai: As the Satsuma.
Thank you so much! This was incredibly helpful 🤙🏽 Im working on some concept art and I wanted to add shogun themes. But before taking from a culture I wanted a better understanding of it! Thank you again ☺️✌🏽✨
The relationship between the Shogun and the Emperor reminds me a bit of the relationship between the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the many domains therein, where imperial rule was significantly weakened, but given how emperors were elevated by plurality, one clan (Habsburg) basically ruled anyway. The kings and emperors of Europe also ruled by Divine Right, but that right could be revoked at any time by the Pope, as it is within his allocated power to do so (“To Bind and to Lose” as scripture puts it). It is rare to take that step though, and that system was shattered by the Protestant Revolutions
Japan is a island by the sea and its Beautiful in the year -10.000.00 japan might not been here but in the year -40.000 it was there and you could walk to it and some people did
During the Shogunate History of Japan, which spanned from the 12th to the 19th century, the country experienced a significant historical context characterized by a feudal system of governance and continuous social and political transformation. This era, particularly the Sengoku period (Warring States period), was marked by widespread conflict and fragmentation as various regional warlords, or daimyo, vied for supremacy. State-building efforts were largely driven by powerful individuals, such as the Oda Clan and figures like Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who employed military conquest, strategic diplomacy, and alliances with other daimyo to unify the country and centralize power. These endeavors culminated in the Tokugawa Shogunate, which established a more stable and centralized governance system, bringing about a prolonged period of relative peace and isolationism in Japanese history. This video explores the dynamic interplay between historical context and state-building strategies in Japan during this transformative Shogunate era.
So the Japanese Emperor is a figurehead. Reminds me of the relation of state and religion in medieval Europe (the Pope was "de facto" ruler of Catholic Europe, but the Kings were truly in charge.)
I dont know why Ancient Japanese pretended to be an Empire, they coule not even unificate their 4 islands ans never manage to conquer oversea territoires, Ancient Japan was too small and weak to be considered as an Empire, even Korean refused to recongize Japan had an emperor, and Chinese called Japanese monarch "dwarf king",
The Pope wasn't even that. The idea of the Pope as ruler of (Western) Europe is a Protestant-Enlightenment invention. The Pope was never more than a cultural representative of Europe's Catholics and ruler of a state that was only the size of El Salvador. No king ever paid true attention to the Pope, and he only had true influence in the immediate vicinity of the Papal States in Italy, mostly because he was a popular figure that could rally troops in defence of Italy's communes, duchies and republics against the Holy Roman Empire and France, and later on Spain, efforts that most of the time really amounted to nothing anyway.
The first Shougun was Ōtomo no, Otomaro, followed by Sakanoue no, Tamuramaro. Thus, Ainu (including Emishi or Qui) should be always important to Japanese history.
Throughout history, is there record of other places outside of Japan where this sort of separation between an sovereign military government and other head(s) of state have also occurred?
I loved the video but i had to keep pausing and going back because it was way too fast. But i got the gist and I think my assignment will be a good one, so thank you.
My kids changed the video play speed to .75 and it was perfect!--not too slow, not too fast and easier to understand. Thank you for the great video and information. We watched it as part of our homeschool lesson.
Rurouni Kenshin is on Hulu and takes place at the end of the Tokugawa era and at the beginning of the Meiji restoration. It's fictional but it's a cool setting!
0:32 It's wrong. In the Battle of Oshu (1189) Minamoto no Yoritomo ruined Oshu Fujiwara clan. After fall of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, Tohoku region(North-East Japan) was ruled by Kamakura Shogunate and Bando Samurai
Is really good information, but you could do a longer video, you talk so fast, I think you don't have to hurry up so much, take it more slow. Beside that, really cool.
Nani how oda nobunaga died just like a 5-7-5 japanese verse. Literally: "The end of the journey, shed onto red maples, the tombstone." or: "This is the end of my journey, red maples sheds with my own blood, now there is my tombstone." just like the end of oda nobunaga ambition or the end or shogunate
This is excellent, exactly what I would need however you're speaking so fast that I wouldn't be able to use this for a lower ability year 8 History class. What a shame!
Sorry about that, my habit of speaking too fast is what motivated me to start narrating videos in the first place (so I could gradually fix it). Maybe the subtitles could help?
Guys I know I talk way too fast in this video 😔😭 I can barely understand myself... I don't need 50 comments pointing it out. I will do a remake soon
I think you do a great job!
I always watch your great videos.
Fighting!!
i don’t think you talk too fast! i like this speed, and it’s easier for me to keep up
I watched it by putting it in 0.75x speed. However your video was soo precise and understandable and ofcourse helpfull🤗
Good for you

He is my favorite daimyo
good news for ya!
his descendant is still living in japan.
and his name is Oda Nobunari.
he is a olympic athlete of figure skate
I'm Japanese and I must say Oda Nobunaga is the most popular of the three among Japanese people too.
I think it's because of his innovative mind.

HIRE A.SAMURAI!!!!
The Mongols did invade China. They even enstablished a dynasty.
Then died in a tornado.
Mongol army and korean landed in Kyushuu.
but They lost the battle.
Ninja’s are much more loyal than samurai’s
Rich people hire a samurai
You needed to mention the sankin-kotai. This was a very important tool of the Tokugawa to keep the daimyos in chech.
Superb video. Really is one of the best of its kind on RUclips. Bravo to its maker. ☝️😎

Edo was just the greatest city before Meiji era.
Do a video about the genpei war.
I knew the Emperors were only figureheads. The shogun were the ones who ruled over everything.
So the question is can the shogunate be revived again?
Can you put the transcript down below?
bit wrong here Hideyoshi managed to unite japan before but he died after his invasion of Korea which fractured japan once more
