This really helps, people! When I switched to one scrappy notebook to just throw everything in, my life changed. It took the pressure off of it having to be pretty and to have separate notebooks for each topic. It's a place to scribble and to let perfectionism stand aside for a while. I use thin, cheap notebooks and everytime I filled one, I go through everything that is still relevant (quotes, recipes, lists, etc) and mark it. This then goes into a pretty notebook, a kind of encyclopedia of my journey. Then in the end of the year I gather all the individual notebooks into one big book, and voilà, there's my pretty diary of the last year! No fuss and highly adaptable!

    Fun historical fact:
Commonplace books were used by monks during the early Renaissance. They would categorize the quotes and scriptures to make them easier to find later. Encyclopedias wouldn't really come along to replace them until much later. So basically commonplace books were the first Google.

Omg this reminds me of 2007-2008 back when my cousin passed away suddenly and I just COULD NOT deal with it, being the first major death I've gone through of someone I was close with. I grew up in a family that wasn't straightforwardly affectionate and felt like I had nobody to talk about everything that was going on in my mind. Instinctively, I started journaling in this notebook instead - pretty much filling it with the kind of stuff this video talks about and it honestly helped so much with my mental health for months after that. Sounds so dramatic but I believe I wouldn't have coped if 13 year old me didn't have my little commonplace notebook to start with.

Thank you, nice job explaining the concept! I've been doing this for some time now. I collect quotes, affirmations, ideas, dreams, books I've read, books I'd like to read, movies I want to see, places I'd like to visit, design ideas for my Etsy sticker shop, etc😊

This is a really cool idea. I always have random quotes scribbled on all sorts of notebooks and paper scraps, but I can never really look back at them all at once cause they're all over the place.

My commonplace book is a binder. I use any kind of paper , watercolour for daily ideas, graph paper for my brain that needs to organize 😉😘, lined paper for longer thoughts, just whatever you need, just three hole it and go. Hugs. I am 70 now and this started in my teens.

I think we can learn so much about ourselves by the things that go in our common place notebooks. A moment of reflections to see deep in our heart. Often times we over look our very own self worth to the world. We are trapped to think everyone thinks the way we do, everyone is drawn to the things we like. And that’s just not true. What we collect is who we are, we must remember to sharing this with the world, shine!!

This is exactly what I need! I have started so many diaries and tried to keep up a bullet journal, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. I have so many quotes highlighted in books on my shelves, and even books I consider my favorites, that have been forgotten. Then there are times where I get a stroke of inspiration from a few words or a piece of art that I would just love to carry with me. I am so glad I found this:)

I started one 3 years ago and I still have it. I'm working on it right now. The funny thing is that I didn't know what kind of notebook is, I just kept it. Sometimes I draw in it too. Thanks for illuminating my mind!!!

I LOVE THIS IDEA OMG I've been just storing quotes / inspiring ideas in random note apps on my phone and computer, in my photo albums, and in assorted journals. All over the place, basically. Never thought about combining them into one location, but now honestly I can't believe I never did! This is brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing this
