I am constantly amazed by the breadth of your design work. I enjoyed and learned from every page of these sketchbooks. Two pages in your yellow book, “the tidy one”, that speak to me personally are the black abstract on brown paper (gel print, one pull) and the drawing of a “tractor or something” done at The National Museum of Rural Life.
Thank you for this inspiring and very valuable tour through your art.

Wow - you are an art student now (a dime for the rime 😂). Congratulations, Kirsten! 🤗👍 In my opinion you already know alot, but maybe the school routine helps you to develop your own style further. I hope you don't loose that playful spirit. Wishing you a good start - Mara
PS: This is for your parents: ❤ (stay strong!).

Hi Mara, 13 days and I’ll officially be a student. The excitement is like Christmas as a kid.
I reckon at least a pound for the rime 😂😎).
If I lose the playful spirit I will stop. I can’t let art become a chore 😢
And my parents appreciate all the love they’ve received. I think the kindness of people has been the silver lining in all this for them. ❤️

Hi! Top tip for your ring bound portfolios. I studied textiles and pages would be painted and samples added in
Remove the spiral from the book, it’s easy with some needle nose pliers. Buy an A2/3 portfolio case to keep your loose pages in.
When you’ve completed your project theme.
You can either feed pages back onto the wire spiral or you can use fabric, twine, wool etc to “sew” the pages back together.
left over pages can make another portfolio too! Removing all the pages means you can work all the way to the edge and the ring binder holes don’t rip from constant turning, they can also be strengthened with extra paper, layer of pva or modge podge. I used tissue paper I’d stamped on to add extra decoration to the page.
Each A3 page would be split into nine sections to show samples. Use a rectangle frame to select the best part of your sample pieces. Add notes to talk about your inspiration source and how you’re developing your ideas while combining the sources e.g Charles RM and Africa.
Work towards a final piece. In your case a piece of art. For each portfolio I worked on, I was given a single word such as reflection. You could interpret this anyway you liked. It’s tricky to start, I’d draw a mind map with a word in the centre.
We would draw ideas from inspiration such as the sixties, (period) Charles rennie MacKintosh (artist) and African tribes (culture). These were my personal sources for one project. You could also use nature, flowers but look at them with different perspective, macro details, just the marks on petals etc. If you can combine all sources of inspiration together in a book you’ve got endless designs to try in all kinds of media. Collage, print, felt making, batik, screen printing, fabric distortion on voiles and draw on faux velvet with heated nib.
The BEST thing is you can work on several pages at a time, you don’t need to wait for them to dry.
    I hope this helps.
I’d also recommend photographing , scanning, or colour photocopy the pages. I had a six month portfolio go missing from my tutors office. I wanted to leave from sheer anger, it was a very big test! I’m glad I stayed. I’ve made a career from it! Good luck with your college interview, you’ll smash it. Just take one large book or 2 smaller ones with your best work and notes.
P.s, you can tie labels to the ring binder or sewn binder with extra samples and notes about the pages of developing your idea.

Hi Kelly, you are amazing. I’m sorry I took so long to reply, but I didn’t want to give you a generic reply!! I’m so happy to talk to you. I have an interview tomorrow for an hnc that is affiliated to an art school degree. So keep everything crossed for me.
I tried to find you on instagram using your profile name here but it’s hard to find. I’d love to follow you on IG.
You have given me so much info (I’ve screenshot to keep a record). You sound just as excited about art as I am. I had a look at your channel, but you don’t have arty videos. You’d probably get about 50 out of what you’ve told me.
I do plan to continue with RUclips when I’m at college but probably in a more chat and show way, like a vlog with sketchbook tours type.
Kelly, please let me know your IG or fb or TikTok (I’ve ran out of social media I know).
I really like masks, I’ve got a few books (just cheap on eBay) so I can be inspired. Also Charles rennie mackintosh, Glasgow school of art, which is what I’m aiming for next year!!
Anyway, hope to chat soon and thank you so much again ❤️

The Great Hairy Willow Herb! I rewatched that video yesterday because I've recently gotten a set of alcohol inks. Thanks for this flip through, it's cool seeing the scope of your works and the one at 20:09 (the right-side page) caught my eye. I reckon it's a bit tough waiting for the art school decision and I'm hoping they see the same spark of curious creativity that we see. My fingers and toes are crossed!

I’ve gotten into one of the colleges I applied to!!!! The other one is my preferred one as it gets you into second year of Glasgow art school. It will be a big change in lifestyle for me, gonna have to brush my hair 😱😂
I’ll keep doing RUclips though, share stuff that I’m learning. Maybe in a style like this video as it’s a lot less work.
