There's a British film about a restaurant owner called Boiling Point. It's pretty much the opposite of a rom-com but might give you some ideas of themes or characters to incorporate into your book.
Hope to get to read some of these ideas in print soon enough.

I am also not a huge romance reader so I am always surprised whenever I think of good romance novel ideas. But honestly, maybe that's a good thing because then it won't be too basic. I try so hard to make sure there is a plot or at the very least a little more substance than some romance books out there (no shade to those who like romance it just usually isn't my cup of tea). Also grateful I am not the only one who has too many book ideas 😆
Thank you for your thoughts on writing diaspora fiction!! As someone who is also part of the Asian diaspora and is ambivalent about fantasy written by a person of the Asian diaspora about their heritage culture/country, I feel like this is a really important and interesting discussion that the Asian diaspora community (or maybe just the part of the community I’ve experienced (?)) has only started to talk about within the last couple (?) of years.
I’m super excited to hear how your contemporary fantasy evolves over these next couple of years! All of your stories sound so refreshing and interesting tbh, and I hope to read them some day when they hit the shelves! 🤩 🔥
Thank you for listening to my thoughts! It's definitely a newer discussion, and one that I am not quite sure how to approach yet-I tried to on Twitter once and a handful of diaspora published authors took it quite personally lol.
I think all we can really do is our best! My personal goal is to stay true to the stories I want to tell, which mostly derive from my personal experiences-even if those aren't necessarily the stories publishing wants to buy from authors who look like me.

All of your projects sound so cool! I'm glad you're still holding onto the first book you had on submission, since it's clearly something you care about so much.
I recently finished my first draft of a novel that's currently with beta readers!! It's called June (or at least, that's the shortened title since I want to keep the real title to myself) and it's a historical fiction following the life of a girl who can see ghosts. I'm also working on the second draft of a high fantasy novel about betrayal, found family, and a corrupt government (and also a cult! Smaller element, but one I'm having a lot of fun with).

I'm currently writing a YA romance that incorporates art, betrayal, and non-death grief. I'm also working on short stories for my short story collection I've been working on since freshman year HS (college freshman now haha).
I’d eat that romcom UP (pun intended). If you ever need betas in the future, I absolutely volunteer (for that and literally any other projects👀!!). YES BI PROTAGONISTS!!! I collect bi characters like my own personal Pokémon cards.

Struggling with Moths but still loving it enough to put time and dedication into it is honestly so relatable. I feel like those are just signs that the story needs to be told and that you are the vessel it needs to go through!
I've been working on a historical romance (regency era - think Bridgerton lol) and I LOVE HER but it's a struggle sometimes. But while that is my main focus for sure, I have a few ideas that I bust out to brainstorm or outline to fill my creative cup when I need it and my WIP isn't providing it.
ALSO your WIPs are all so different from each other and I love that for you -- I'm the same way 😂 Why just one genre when you could write them all???

Awesome! I just did some bullet journal spreads to actually list out all the projects I want to work on and track what step I’m in with each. I think I’m up to 26 projects, but four of them already have at least one draft done. One is with an editor, one is with beta readers, one is being revised with notes from an agent I queried, etc.
Twenty-six, that's amazing!! I'm scared to count out all the potential projects and ideas I have lol. It sounds like you have a really good system going!
Lots of exciting projects you got on your plate! I'm especially rooting for the old project, the one you mention being a 'book of the heart,' I so get having those long passion projects and I hope it finds it's way to completion!! It sounds very my vibes, hehe
As for me, I JUST TODAY finished a short fic for my blog-- it's fanfic but it's one that I've been trying to write for many years, and then two months ago when I sat down to be like "OK let's knuckle down and finish this" my medicine regiment changed and uhhh I didn't start working on it again until last week! BUT IT'S FINISHED NOW, I'll revise it tomorrow (it's only 3.2k words) and then I can move on to my next chunk of work!! Maybe I'll get something nice for dinner to celebrate :)

You can do this Lynn! I love your cooking metaphors with Moths lol so real about the marination. The lit fab synopsis was so vibrant, can't wait to see where it goes! and your clifi book sounds so interesting? The only climate fiction book i remember reading a while ago was 'Dry' by the Shustermans which definitely made me more conscious about how frivolously I use water. Also I WILDLY agree with you about short fiction. I've just been trying to polish up on the smaller arcs you can do with short fiction because while I have a running google notes list of books I want to write, being incapable of fully rendering those ideas on the page terrifies me. (In short, I'm gonna leave fully committing to a novel off to the side for a couple years. let those ideas ferment!!) And I really relate to (as a diaspora kid) feeling lowkey unqualified to write fantasy books that draw so deeply from my own culture/experiences I don't personally have. (i've truly been westernized lol). i've long been wanting to have a conversation about that with someone, especially since writing and my culture are so close to me. it's reassuring to see acknowledged here, and I totally get your perspective. Wishing you all the luck on your projects!

I'm also trying to figure out a good way to approach the topic of ~writing while diaspora~-I don't want to police anyone's work or what kind of stories they're drawn to tell, but I think the publishing industry does put an unfair amount of pressure on bipoc authors to tell stories like that, which can yield some unpleasant results imo. It's a very complex subject with a lot of layers!! Thank you so much

Ahh I'm also super excited for it, I hope it lives up to the standard you've set!! Honestly wildlife conservation is a tough field and I've since transitioned out of it, but if there are volunteer opportunities near you I definitely recommend :)

Glad to hear you talk about wanting to write cli-fi (hadn't heard that term before). I'm writing one right now and how it's affecting all of us, and it stems a lot from just being tired of watching the current government we have in Sweden say that they care about climate change, but their actions proving the exact opposite. Looking forward to hearing (and reading) more about your project :)

All your WIP and future ideas sound super cool! I love the idea of more stories talking about climate change. One I read recently that I enjoyed was The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He, but otherwise, I feel like I haven't really read that much and certainly not from an ecology POV. I feel like Miyazaki films always address big ideas like war and relationship between nature and man in a non-preachy was which makes them feel more meaningful!
I have similar thoughts about diaspora writers, writing fantasies about their heritage culture. On one hand, I think it can be well done and that there are valid emotions/experiences that can be explored there, on the other hand, I think people tend to underestimate the amount of research you have to do to make the worldbuilding feel different than copying and pasting western fantasy worldbuilding into a vaguely "exotic"/'Eastern" setting. Moreover, how do you make it feel authentically part of another culture without alienating your primary readership? It's difficult, but I think going to the country and learning more about the history/being immersed in the culture can only benefit the story (or start another one?) so definitely think a trip to Korea is in order!

I always forget how big the messages are because the stories themselves are so beautiful and feel quite personal. That's definitely a goal for the story I'm going to work on, too.
It's a tricky subject, there are just so many layers and nuances and exceptions! I again don't want to tell anyone what to do haha, I just want to do the best I can personally, which involves a lot of research and firsthand experience.

I started following your channel a few months ago (maybe it was longer than that, I can’t remember), but it’s really cool to hear about MOTHS as well as your other projects! I love that you’re still inspired by your former books that were on sub to shape them into what you want to. All of your ideas sound SO good! Contemporary Fantasy AND cli-fi? Yesss!! As a marginalized writer myself, I know how important it is to get our stories out into the world.
Have you read DISORIENTATION by Elaine Hsieh Chou? It’s literary fiction/satire about a Taiwanese American PhD candidate in academia. I know it’s not genre fiction, but based on what you were saying about academic institutions, you might find it interesting.
I’m waiting on beta reader feedback for my PhD dissertation novel (adult contemporary/urban fantasy) before I dive into the fourth draft (AHHH!!) and drafting an adult gothic horror romance (first draft/early brainstorming).
