We scraped off our popcorn ceilings and did a skip trawl. It looked so good…. My current house has a type of skip trawl on walls and ceilings. I find it is the easiest texture to match. I’ve actually been patching cracks and holes myself.
I don't have textured ceilings. However, due to my... inexperience with DIY and attempts to repair my ceilings, I accidentally introduced some texture where I patched it all up. I don't hate it. There's something enjoyable about just a little bit of imperfection (particularly as I did it, I'm pretty proud of what I've been able to achieve. It's mine)
I'm literally eating popcorn as I view this. I've never had popcorn ceilings. However, instead of scraping, I would prefer to replace the drywall or put up wood slats and paint it white.
Had my texted ceiling professionally removed about 3 weeks ago and I’m still cleaning up drywall dust! It looks great, but it will take a long time before I can look up and say it was worth it!
Thank you for this, I hate my popcorn ceiling only slightly less than I LOVE my cats. Nope. These comments were enough to convince me removal is not an option. 😂 I know, there are options to keep the cats safe and out of the house but... I take crazy cat mom to a new level, so nope. Thank you for the data I needed for an informed decision! ❤
The absolute first thing you should do before any removal of popcorn texture is to test for Asbestos. Period. PS: if your home was built in a certain time period, test the drywall mud and old flooring while you're at it.
I love my popcorn ceiling. I'm a 70's person. I'm looking to repair some ceiling that has sheetrock damage on a swirl ceiling. I'm just going to skim it with plaster.
It's so annoying moving into.a new build to find popcorn ceilings, and they are so expensive to remove. I was quoted $ 8000 for a 920 Sq ft condo. It's just too much
My house is old, very ooold. Only a couple rooms don't have textured ceilings. And those ceilings are hideous. I'm not fond of textured ceilings, but they're better than the alternative. 😱
Instead of ripping it out why not nail something over it? Like 1 1/2 inch wood strips painted white. At least that’s a newer look texture. Or thin wide wood planks with molding on it to frame a light fixture?
You could, for sure! I guess you would be losing a touch of ceiling height because of the texture, but it would mean you'd be avoiding the removal process.
We scrape the popcorn, but are thinking of just painting the ceilings now instead of skim coating them. Mostly because my husband has shoulder surgery and he’s not able to do that and paying someone is out of the budget. Is there a thicker paint that we could possibly use to maybe make see texture less noticeable? We are also going to paint the walls that have like orange peel on them so I think her paint would probably help smooth things out. Any ideas or recommendations?
I have very loose popcorn, like I only vacuum it every couple years because I too have shoulder issues, and I assumed it would eventually be gone 😂 I swear it self propagates... Anyway, I had some attic work done and a slipped HAMMER went through my living room ceiling, but the contractor just used a can of "spray texture" type of patch - which is NOT popcorn. My suggestion then, maybe you could lightly scrape off as much texture as possible, and get it coated/sealed with a less obvious texture, like a gentle bumpy rather than full on styrofoam ball texture? I don't know if that spray can substance that my contractor used would be sold in a large enough container to just respray the whole ceiling though, it wasn't in a paint can type of application that I saw. That's an option I am personally considering though, because 1 bedroom has a light texture, that's not noticable and is smooth like paint to touch and clean, and that would be preferable to the crumbly crap I have in the living room/hall/kitchen 😢
Hubs & I dislike it….in our new build builder put in low profile stamped….barely an see it but it’s not smooth. Builders charge a premium for a smooth ceiling.
I CAME ACROSS YOUR CHANNEL IN MY FEED... MAYBE BECAUSE I'VE BEEN WATCHING HOW TO UPDATE YOUR HOUSE? I DECIDED TO WATCH YOUR VIDEO AND YOU NOW HAVE ANOTHER FOREVER SUBSCRIBER ❤ I ABSOLUTELY HATE, HATE, HATE POPCORN CEILINGS 🤮 I LOVE THE SWIRLED DESIGN AS IT ADDS A CLASSY LOOK. IT'S ALSO MUCH LESS WORK ALONG WITH BEING CHEAPER THAN BUYING WOOD, TILES ETC. A FEW YEARS AGO I WATCHED A VIDEO THAT SHOWED HOW TO DO THIS. THE GUY USED AN INEXPENSIVE "SWIRL TOOL" THAT KINDA LOOKED LIKE THE OLD MOPS, BUT WITH SHORTER STRINGS. I'D BE FOREVER GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD TELL ME WHAT THE "SWIRL TOOL" IS ❤ I WANT TO GET RID OF THESE HORRIBLE POPCORN CEILINGS BEFORE I GO INSANE 😢

That is awesome! I could not agree more with the matching aspect. Way easier to do than with popcorn I find.

Good idea to have a video about what to replace popcorn with. Everyone just shows you how to take it off

Whatever you do, don't eat the ceiling, just the actual popcorn! lol
I don't hate popcorn ceiling, I was searching youtube, because they are really useful.

Same here. Popcorn crap was in EVERY room and closet--even the two bathrooms and kitchen. Now i look up and can relax. The guys did a fabulous job.
Now wait a minute, did you test yours for Asbestos? There could be a high likelihood it’s in it. This is the main I’m not sure if I should remove it.

Very expensive to replace or rid of!! 😔

i guess im an oddball- i really like popcorn ceilings!
Yes that is unusual!
That's great! You don't need to worry about removal! haha
I am literally about to add popcorn to my house. Lol.. i like it.
I’m used to them so smooth ones look weird to me. This house was built in ‘97 and it doesn’t flake off so we aren’t worried.

Nail wood wainscoting over it. Paint it white thin molding on the ceiling around it. It will look nice.
I was quoted 4000 for about 1000 sq feet im still debating if I should spend the money
My popcorn has glass in it. My husband loves it but all I can think about is the dust that it holds
