These dogs mentally ripe after 3y of age. If trained as should be, they became very loyal to their owner after 3rd y. They need 20 to 40 min walk/run daily, if home yard is big enough, every second day also suffices. The owner should be around the house most of the time, maybe having work at home. In this way a firm connection between the dog and the owner is achieved. KS needs a job to do. If this is just guard-sleeping somewhere in the yard, it is ok and must be payed for it, must know it. KS is the best hiking pal, if e-collar is used as a pager on distance, he can run meadows, forests and rivers freely. In this way you get the best friend on the world.
Much talk here about Šarplaninac, not a Karst shepherd. They have many physical differences. Karst shepherd is up to 35 - 38 kg, however a modern Š. can be double of that and painted in more colors. Therefore KS stays modest low cost eater, very agile and braver than Š, GS or rottie when cornered. Karst s. is therefore still in original working shape and form. Very dedicated to a fair and friendly owner. KS can be also a very family dog if trained properly. Some people have them in houses and apartments, however the best is a farm or at least a property with a biger fenced yard. The dog needs a dedicated owner who treats KS as a working pal and friend. Best dog for right owners!
My husband and I rescued a (presumed to be) Karst shepherd from Ukraine a few months ago. She's extremely stubborn, and I'm having a hard time keeping her interested with training. Do you have any tips? I can't really find much info on them either. She's also going through heartworm treatment, so she's severely under exercised at the moment, which is also making it frustrating. she's the sweetest girl ever, and I just want to make sure her needs are met. thank you in advance!
@@alexwitteveen7237 I wrote the answer but it disappeared, so again: I doubt it is really KS, since 99% of them are in Slovenia (not Croatia). You have to work with your dog same as with any other having such issues. You need some Cesar Milan' and Dog Daddy' skills. It's not hard if knowledge is here, but almost impossible if it isn't. The point is to attain personal relationship and trust. You have to be a leader, but with much skill and hearty connection. Then, in a few weeks the problem is gone. But if the breed is some other and some genetic issues are added, it can be quite a hard job to do. The owner needs skill, love, strength, fairness and personal presence most of the time - then the dog follows the new atmosphere very quickly. Best, 🖐️
@@Jan-sb2ql I assumed she was a Karst solely because she looks identical to other Karst shepherd's, but we will never really know. She does have a lot of the characteristics as well, but can't be 100% sure. I've had dogs growing up, but this is my first time owning my own dog. I really appreciate you getting back to me. I'll just have to keep searching and trying different things with her. She's going through heartworm treatment atm, so I can't do too much with her yet. She's already very loyal, and a really good friend, and I look forward to our future. I'm lucky that she's extremely well behaved, there are just a few things we need to work on (trying to eat off my plate, and picking up roadkill, which I chalk up to food insecurity in her past as she was abandoned)
@@alexwitteveen7237 Then you need just two things to have the best dog in the World: 1. Much walks in nature. Hiking at least 20 min. daily, or 40. 2. Make some play with her daily. Next thing you need is e-collar mastery that enables the dog to RUN without leash far and freely and use ones energy. Proper usage of the tool brings highest freedom to dog and owner. Its like a pager, just informing the dog on distance what you want. Be interesting to the dog: snacks should be earned, make the dog to seek them ... Then you have the best friend, very loyal. Best wishes!
@@Jan-sb2ql this is great advice. Luckily it looks like I'm on the right track. We go for lots of hikes, and play in the water. We stay out for hours on the long ones. she's get an hour of walks minimum a day, and play (she's learning how to play still, she didn't really know how to be a dog). I should check out the e-collar training, though unfortunately there aren't a lot of places around here that she's allowed completely off leash, but we are looking for places we can take her. Thank you so much :)
Most beautiful dog ever!
Šarplaninac Shepherd and Karst Shepherd are closely related., as a Karadenitz (Black sea) Shepherd dog .
