One defence for how insanely flashy he normally is: if you get told Tengen Uzui is coming, you'll be looking *specifically* for a hyper flashy, flamboyant bishi, who is practically radiating he stands out so much. By being so loud and standing out so much, people will know of him, and that this is what to look out for. So all he needs to do to make infiltration easier is to let the place know he's coming, and then show up in disguise. Throw on a farmers outfit or tradesmen attire or something, and... you'd likely just ignore him, because that random farmer isn't flashy and you are looking for someone insanely flashy.
In other words, his normal personality and attire are misdirection mind games, which is ninja 101.

To be fair in the context of the show it makes sense that they are fairly useless in the final battle, most humans even highly trained humans can't go toe to toe with a Demon unless trained in breath techniques. The fact that they were able to do anything against the Obi demon is a testament to their skill. And then them not interfering in the fight makes perfect sense as well, cause as we see with the one who did try to help, Gyutaro registered that she was important to Tengen and made a point to try and take her hostage or kill her.

I thought the main reason for Tengen's wives being useless was the fact that Tengen would deliberately keep them out of the fighting (and even regretted sending them on this infiltration mission in the first place) because he cared more about their safety than his mission as a ninja or demon slayer (an idea that, according to the story, went against the beliefs of both his clan and the demon slayer corps' general creed).

Tengen’s wives seeming lack of competence isn’t something I really hold against them. Tengen’s kind of ridiculous and I wouldn’t hold him as the standard every shinobi in Demon Slayer should be held at. They are way, WAY out of their league fighting Upper Moon Demons, hell Tengen himself was. The Upper Moon had vastly more experience than they could ever hope to have in espionage, so them being caught was at least partly due to a difference in experience. So them being relegated to crowd control and support while irritating is understandable. Shinobi were ready to lay down their lives, but they also weren’t stupid enough to throw their lives on a mission they couldn’t accomplish. A failed mission is always less troublesome than having to train a new Shinobi from scratch.
And as far as infiltration goes, they all successfully accomplished their missions very well. Hell, Himatsuru even had a reasonable exfiltration, it was just her lack of info that would’ve been hard to figure out without being caught herself, that put her in danger. Makio and Suma getting caught is definitely their error though, so I can definitely see where you take issues with them.

I understand they could have meant the earlier, but considering how Shonen anime describes "strength" I wouldn't think it would just be muscular capability.

The Mugen Train arc was made into a theatrical OVA, which never aired on TV, and the show hasn't been on the block since the first season.
Toonami has also been down on its luck recently; JoJo Part 6 got sniped by Netflix, so many other great series were locked to other streaming platforms, and most other bridges got burned between Sony's purchase/devouring of FUNimation (RIP) and WB's merger with Discovery leading to a mass purge of content (including original anime like Fena, Shenmue, and Blade Runner, which probably caused a lot of rifts with other studios).

Perhaps the reason lies in necessity not sexism. How many shinobi does the Demon Slayer corps have at their disposal? Probably only a few counting Tengen and his wives. This makes Tengen's wives valuable assets for searching for demons. Finding out where the demons are is just as important as having talented swordsmen. If Tengen's wives start breathing training, they will not be able to gather information. Basically, Tengen's wives are more valuable honing and utilizing their ninja skills rather than learning breathing techniques.

Not to mention in that fight Zenitsu and Inosuke are with the wives and struggling to do any meaningful damage until Tengen arrives.
As for the final battle 1 of the wives does give Tanjero an opportunity with the poison kuni and they all stay out of the way when the last 3 fighters are moving so fast anyone would have difficulty seeing them much less keeping up.

one point that made me think of your videos in the show was where Tengen said to survive no matter what to his wives, opposed to his fathers teachings of dying for the mission......when in your videos you mention how one of the Ninjas main tenet was to survive no matter what. I thought it was kind of ironic how in defying his ninja family he would actually be going more in line to historical ninja.

After all is not rare of government bodies/high authorities around the world to hire spies and assassins at some point, and their secrecy was part of their job. Hence why anything about ninjas is dubious by the fact we would never know what those secret agents did behind the scene. And the line between a ninja and someone who isn't was very fine at times, even samurais did use ninja techniches at some point to win battles or do undercover jobs.

They were doing good information gathering and were targeted when off guard, they did their actual jobs very well since the training they got from Uzui was for support roles to keep them out of danger, and they spent the fight helping to evacuate civilians so that no innocent lives were lost. All things considered the only real problems they have are being quirky in the same way as the main trio

Another absolutely great and enlightening Which Ninja episode.
I hope someday you tackle the characters of my all time FAVORITE ninja game franchise, "Tenchu". Translating to "Heaven's Judgement" it's a phenomenal game franchise in my personal opinion since the PS1 era, with entries on PS2, PS3, Xbox360, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS. Almost always following the primary cast of Shinobi Rikimaru and Kunoichi Ayame, with other characters occasionally added into the mix such as former next in line as clan leader of the fictional Azuma Ninja clan Tatsumaru and doctor Tesshu Fujioka. Of course Tenchu Z has you create a fully customized character that acts as an operative for Rikimaru. Honestly i think between ALL of the titles there is a lot of historical accuracies, mythological elements, techniques, skills, and weaponry utilized to be discussed.
Timeline wise though it can sometimes be a bit tricky since the second game is essentially a prequel (and about the only one to feature customizable levels, which i honestly loved), and since for some reason depending on the console it can occasionally have different titles for the same entry.
Additionally i'd love a What Culture on some of the talking points pertaining to the various entries in the "Way of the Samurai" game franchise. Annoying to get through as they can sometimes be with their time-sensitive story progression and the like, they seem to cover quite a bit in regards to swordsmanship and sword styles (both literally and techniques), have some pretty darn nice visuals, and they feel a bit like they are a commentary of the shifts in Japanese culture. Just throwing those out there for consideration..

I'm pretty sure if they were trained equally they could be at the level of Tengen or close. The line "No Kunoichi can match a Shinobi's strengh" feels as they trying to justify their actions but comes across as "No woman without training can match a man who has been properly trained" which is dumb, and imo the point. And Hinatsuru is easily the most competend of all three of them. Not only did she stay undercover the longest, and manage to reach Oiran status in impressively short time (I can't remember if the other two where classified as Oiran as well), she also figured out that she was busted before beeing captured and tried to retread by faining illness. (Sure, that retread failed, but it was still a smart thing to at least attempt!) Than in the final fight, she uses distraction/poisoned weapons to aid Usui, despite still beeing severely weakened by the poison she had consumed. I'd say, from what little we see, if she had actually been healthy during that fight, she would have been a pretty decent ally!

Plus, the "leather armor" isn't actually leather armor anyways, it's usually just leather clothing, which offers no greater protection and just makes them noisy and stand out more. I sit and think about it and...what if those entries about women being inferior a feint? A means of basically going, "Hur hur, woman bad." as a means of causing others to underestimate kunoichi. I mean think about it, "little ole damsel in distress" would be an excellent cover to just soak up information like a damn sponge. Granted, I haven't seen season 2 yet nor have I seen this particular sequence, but considering how incredibly tricksy demons in that universe can be and how bonkers their powers can get, why not drop what appear to be "3 inept bimbos" in the middle of a red light district to just feed information and to not entirely blow their cover by "not being of any use in a fight." Everything you see might be a calculated risk to make sure something of greater use happens or some crucial information gets somewhere to do more damage to their targets. Again, still haven't seen season 2, but if they're suppose to be ninja and they have as much understanding of the preconceived notions of gender roles/identity of this particular universe, why not exploit the hell out of it to your advantage?
