Thank you for uploading, I have watched it a few times, it's quite a good lecture.
Probably one of the best conference I have even seen for a long time! Extremely compelling! And going to help to reach that goal!
Have you reach that goal yet?
Eben Moglen is one of the very few people I've heard say anything truly intelligent, accurate, and very much needed, in a long time. When I tell people about the dangers of social networks, and Facebook in particular they look at me like I'm a conspiracy theorist.. they just don't get it. This is a great video.. Thank you!
I remembered this talk in light of recent developments.
Glad to watch the talk again.
Zhou Kai, Software engineer from China
This is brilliant!!
I made a post about this talk. It was prophetic indeed.
This is a fantastic lecture. I'm only sorry that I only discovered it a year late.

eben's a top geezer! he does the same introductory schtick about having no date but that's ok...he's sure got his lecture together, loads of good stuff
Prophetic
extremely intelligent guy
I need to watch this. Note to self.
Can anybody analyze the technical feasibility of what he said about wall wart servers? The protocols for data sync or the volume of the total data or the computing ability of it or something else?
@Omnifarious0 Windows computers were not completely capable of acting as peers? You mean pre Windows for Workgroups? Or because they were too unstable?
@askjdog eben's a top geezer!
I watched the episode of the Colbert Report that Aaron Sorkin appeared on, and he summed up Facebook in these terms: Facebook:socialization::reality tv:realtiy. This is a subjective analogy not favoring one alternative over the other, but rather a comparison based on the priorities of the user, or in this case the viewer.
@UnclePutin
what about redunancy? let's take 2 micro SD cards, RAID 1 and a third for "hot spare".
in addition, depending on file type and thus data size, we back up to devices near by, like mobile phones, portables, connected through bluetooth or wifi, @home, friends, local store, public transport, additionally.
Being aware of what you work with is the key to any tool. Madame Curie worked with radioactive material well aware of the risk. Still she did it. In the same way many of us use Internet software. Is it that dangerous? Maybe.
Does anyone have the written lecture? I will be very grateful for this:)!!
It's on the Software Freedom Law Center site. Just google it.
Joly MacFie ! Thank You, I'm in heaven:)!
@hungrypony That's what "favorites" is for. :^)
I agree with you, but I have posted this video to my facebook wall
I understand that intent of this speech is not necessarily to decry Facebook or the practice of social networking, but rather Moglen discusses the intellectual and personal freedom that the end-user should be capable of exercising through use of the web. To the comment concerning violent adolescents and the lack of innocence this freedom would provide, understand that what others use the system for should not be of our concern; systems are often exploited due to their lack of freedom.
@Omnifarious0 Microsoft's indows would be more capable if it included more bundled software. However that is not really Microsoft's fault - they are forbidden from extending their OS monopoly into adjacent application domains by a court order.
So... its been seven years. Has anything significant been done along the lines of creating a wall wart that can do Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.?
Sounds like a very fun and rewarding concept. Where / how can I help?
freedombox.org resulted from the vision shared in this talk. And the whole point is to stop using Facebook and other 'free spying services'. We should stop giving away the keys to our digital homes.
Bart Notelaers Thanks. I’d like to figure out a way to make a viable alternative to RUclips. I have some ideas. I’m going to contact them to see what they think.
Yes, it's called the Fediverse: fediverse.party/
The transformation of our horrible world will come! Dr. Brillenschnitzel is trying to do his part.
@askjdog There is this famous quote: "Just because you're paranoid don't mean they're nor after you." Conspiracy theorists can be right. In this case you obviously are.
The smallest detail, the smallest fragment of info is worth money. If you stack it high enough it's worth a shitload of money. If they can mine all your data for free and sell it for 1 cent a day. And they do it to 500 million 'friends'. Man how can anybody believe it's NOT happening?
As for the cloud, I see its development as the first step toward a primitive consciousness [for the internet], for lack of a better term. Emergent processes are now capable from the internet as a whole, similar to the manner in which a developmental brain works in a child learning vocabulary, gestures, and, dare I say, memes; a dangerous proposition, if it is placed in context.
@oldarney lol yeah, what you don't see is the control panel on the backend with "prepare tarball to send to FBI". won't be so funny when you're in jail because you can't pay back the $12 million in "damages" you inflicted upon the MPAA for sharing that cool song you like with friends.
@oldarney oh never mind lol, i thought you were being ironic.
"Microsoft" is three syllables ;)
@ThomasAChang I'm sorry, but this last statement is just not true. You should familiarize yourself with the whole concept of free (as in freedom) software. Rather than personal insecurity - it is concerned with the general insecurity of proprietary ownership of digital tools and means of communication. Google "Stallman" and "punkcast" for some explanatory videos.
Microsoft invented - or are responsible for - the client-server architecture with fat servers on the internet?!? Is that history right?
Fix your laws. Its really simple.
I think it is to much speaking!
