    Air rifle + good aim = food for the cats and more food on my trees for me. Squirrels are the number 1 cause of fires in homes also. They are not meant to live around human dwellings. Do what you need to do and don't feel bad. A good scope and some practice will give you instant kills and you won't have to feel bad about the animal suffering. If you're a gardener and worried about disposal they make great composting material and fertilizer. Too much Disney in these comments and not enough common sense.

    • @frostyfrances4700

      Believe me, I've been swarmed by Disney fans myself for describing the exploits of my hunting dogs and not grieving loudly enough when a city dweller moved out to this rural area and went bonkers when coyotes got her barn cat. Nature is red in tooth and claw, I told her. I bet she hasn't stopped screaming yet. But the pictures she posts indicate she's not vegetarian, so I admit to punking her just a little by replying to one that it's (sob) "so damned heartless when people eat Bessie." If I see that lady coming, I'd probably better run like hell. :)

    I moved from Brazil to California and this summer I wanted to start growing vegetables at my garden, I just planted a couple tomatoes in bigger pots and got some other vegetables like strawberries and they ate everything, I don’t even know if my tomatoes will survive. They haven’t left any leaf, I thought they were cute, but I got so mad with those pests, mainly after all hard work and love you put on it. I know I’m being irrational thinking like that, but I just hate them. I’ll try some of those tips, like getting a net that they aren’t able to clim to cover all my plants. It won’t be aesthetically nice but I hope it works to keep them away, maybe I try some repellent, but I need to be careful because I’m growing food. Thank you for the information!

      The only surefire way to keep tree rats off something is to totally encase it in framed hardware cloth - the strong stiff wire with tiny openings. Then if you can, put a good huntin' dawg in the fenced yard. That'll work like a charm. But I realize not everyone's in a situation to do that, so good luck.

  • @frostyfrances4700
    @frostyfrances4700 2 года назад +17

    My favorite tip is: Get yourself a good hunting dog. I have 2. Had chows b4 since they're my favorites, but the smooth-coat JRT is all legs and fast as greased lightning. Her first Spring season, she took an average of 12-15 squirrels a week on our little quarter acre. My back yard looked like a killing field - which in essence it was until the squirrels - or at least the brighter ones - learned to keep out. Her stepsister, a little mini Beagle cross, can't catch a squirrel to save her life, but she runs around all day out there (except winter) with her nose to the ground, searching out and consuming burrowing varmints. Every time the weather first warms up, the dog food bill drops dramatically the first couple months. Of course I'm kept busy filling up holes in the yard all the time, but that's easier than dealing with the tree rodents. And it's a remote tiny town, so no HOAs to worry about.

      We had 2 terriers, they are bred to go after little furry things. W had this particularly A-hole squirrel that would literally get on the top of the fence and taunt the dogs, it actaully got to be kind of fun to watch. This squirrel was a genius, it got one it the gods toys and put it up on the top of a fence post and then just taunted the dogs for hours

    • @frostyfrances4700
      @frostyfrances4700 2 года назад +2

      @@tealadyp6380 - That's rich! I call squirrels 'tree rats' but it's a pet name. When I first bought this old house circa 1890, at first I didn't have a perimeter fence so the chows couldn't roam free outdoors, and the resident squirrels knew it. The tree rats would race up and down the porch rail screeching up a storm while the poor dogs looked on helplessly from behind one of the tall narrow windows. After the fence was up, the chows could run loose but they were still too slow to catch anything. But (drum roll) when the smoothcoat JRT replaced them after 16 years, my back yard where the 2 giant trees are looked like a slaughterhouse at first until they realized what greased lightning they were dealing with. One of her targets was perched atop a privacy fence post, taunting her; she just crouched down, raced full tilt forward, jumped with her front paws about halfway up, vaulted on upward, and snatched herself a tasty treat.

    This comment is going to be the only information on the web about a particular squirrel problem - EATING MY LOG CABIN! I built it of white northern cedar in 1993. I had no problem until I had it stained in 2017, using a name brand log cabin finish. Squirrels immediately began chewing on every surface they could reach - literally hundreds and hundreds of spots - all the log ends, soffit and fascia, porch railings, floor, etc. I tried coating the cabin with alum and with zinc oxide, both bitter substances. Nothing. I shoot them but I'm only at the cabin part time so most of the time they are free to eat it. I tried giving them their favorite food, sunflower seeds, but they will not touch the seeds when they can feed their addiction to the stain. It IS an addiction, because I can shoot my 12 gauge at them, miss by a few feet, and they will return in 15 minutes. I have all the footage I need to make a video but I'm afraid of the inevitable legal attack from the paint company. If only there were other people talking about this . . . . I have investigated all the useless rodent poisons on Amazon, read all the silly suggestions about mint and pepper. My squirrels are not interested in food, only in the drug they are getting from the stain. I would love to coat the cabin in strychnine but it's too dangerous . If you read this far and you have a log cabin, all I can safely tell you is to not stain it with anything that includes the word "LOG", and you will be avoiding the product that ruined my cabin.

      Wow that’s quite a story!! Unbelievable, but I do believe it!! I am a long time carpenter builder in my 60s and I’ve only built one log cabin for someone else, a log cabin is the very worst way to go. I did mostly all shops, garages, and additions on houses. The most common and best way to build is on a concrete (cement) floor pad, 8” to 24” pony wall, 2x6 wood framed walls, wood rafters, OSB or plywood, then all covered with vertical metal siding and metal roofing screwed on, metal soffit & facia, metal doors. In other words keep it all completely metal on the outside (except for vinyl window frames covered with metal hinge or roll shutters), all for fire proofing, “very low maintenance”, longevity, and of course for animal proofing.

    The only real predators squirrels fear are man with a bb rifle, hawks, eagles and owls in the US. I had tried every humane deterrent for squirrels in my yard as a bird watcher. In the beginning, I thought I'd feed them at their own feeding station so they wouldn't steal from bird feeders. WRONG! SO FREAKING WRONG!!! They would gorge themselves until their food was gone and then muscle the bird feeders. The last straw was when one pounced a male cardinal at the cardinals' feeder. From then on, no feeding station for them, a dual antenna wifi camera overlooking bird feeders and my bb gun armed with penetrator point pellets for an instant death. I end one and four more come to eat on top of their dead. *UNBELIEVABLE*

      @dxunja 2 года назад +2

      Glad to say I won. I once had a brood of six or more squirrels robbing my feeders and attacking the birds. Some special ops sh$t had to be done. I watched some RUclipsrs eradicating the evil little tree fairies with .22 rifles and such. It was past time I took the assault to them..."Operation - Kill those M.F'ers"! I transformed my lanai into a sniping war ground by installing blackout drapes to conceal my presence. It worked without a hitch for a while that is until the little bastards coordinated their version of F.U.H.I.G.E or F'k U Human I'm Gonna Eat! Let's call the first squirrel, No. 1 - he found a one inch gap in the drapes and would scutter up the screen at my 9 o'clock as the look out. He foiled my mission many times until I mended that curious little gap. No. 2 would pace the attached deck for my scent and relay it's findings to No. 3 who would approach the tree behind the feeder from a blind spot offered by the tree's wide trunk and stay out of view between the foliage. Mind you now, No. 1 never ditched his position behind me. They had me at a stale-mate for a time. So I'd call it a day and retreat inside from the heat. When No. 3 got the tail flick from No. 2, he'd call for the remainder of the brood to descend upon frightened birds and gorge. I know because my security cameras alerted me to the thievery occurring behind my back. So, I learned to mask my scent with pine car freshners. If the winds blew through, all that snitching booger got was a stinging nose of pine and not me. No. 2 dropped the nut big time and it was game over and happy bird watching for me. Fast forward, the squirrels are curious from time to time. But unfortunately, for the new versions of the Umbrella Academy of Squirrels, they are humanely dispatched and feed to the crows, raccoons and possums. They need to eat too.

    bought a havaheart squirrel trap because of a squirrel in my attic. there's a cove area on my roof the squirrel goes into to get to the attic. for 4 days straight every morning i'd go outside and the trap would be laying on the sidewalk. he/she would push the trap out of the hole. finally i put the cardboard box, by itself, in the hole and the squirrel stopped, for awhile, coming around. unfortunately he's been coming around again. i'd try to board up the hole but it located abound 3-4ft inside the cove and i can't get to it. only way is to tear up that section of roof. after spending 11k on the roof that's not a option.

What's your experience been with Annie freeze and squirrels ? Right now I have a hole and a pipe upstairs bathroom that they have chewed through for the 2nd time. It flooded my downstairs bathroom. I fixed the 1st leak a week ago and poured Kayan pepper all over the place. It just moved 2' away and chewed on another pipe. While I was up there trying to find the leak I noticed they are chewing through wires as well. I don't like to kill anything but these damn squirrels got to go.
