On 5/5/20, I followed your video instructions to repair my Sony CDP-300CX which was skipping tracks after I got it working by replacing its three belts two weeks ago. I cleaned the rod and plastic gears of old grease and regreased them with Lithium grease. No more skipping. Thanks for sharing your troubleshooting and repair video. Without your detailed and thorough video, my Sony 300 would have gone to the landfill.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! For 15 years I've had troubles with some CD's playing the 1st song. A simple cleaning as you showed and it is working perfectly again!
This guy has obviously been doing this for a while. As have I. Good explanation of "why", as well. I just did exactly the same thing to the same model machine. It worked the second time, as I didn't clean all of the moving surfaces as thoroughly as I should have, the first time. The old grease does turn into a sticky goo after time and collects whatever schmutz/ shyte/ dust is airborne in your house. I sometimes use very a light bike grease with good results. Or a moly grease, as he did. Sometimes the laser will also drop in output with age and on typical KSS-type Sony laser assemblies a very slight CCW turn of the laser output trimmer dials it up just a touch. This helps with burned CD copies (especially cheap-ass blanks), which have way less reflectivity, and thus less laser pickup output than commercial pressings. NOT less audio volume. Less laser output only affects playability when most discs will play and some don't, as a symptom. Good work Mr 12Volt.
I recently had SONY 200 disc CD player given to me because it was skipping & the guy was going to trash it. I used info from this video to repair it and it works great. Thank you for always having such great content.
I purchased one of these at a Pawn Shop for $10 last summer. It worked but the CD would get stuck half of the time. It needs both the gear bands and CD. After 8 months of this thing sitting alone I finally fixed the bands and about to grease up the CD Rom. I have sunk in $40 total in this project but plan on selling it. Thanks for this video, you are the man!
THANKS!!!!!!!!!! I watched and LEARNED! Took one video from here and wa-la brought an even older 50+1 back to life, not only did I learn, I was able to follow with no issues. I subscribed today. wow!!
Last week, I bougt a SONY CDP-CX 355 for € 70 on willhaben. First 5 loaded CDs showed no issues. But then i had the same problems, as showen in this video. Exactly the instruction I was looking for to solve the problem! I could fix it and now it works. Thanks a lot from salzkammergut in austria. 😀
I bought a 2nd hand sony mega storage 300cd for 75usd. The seller of course didn't detail the music skipping problem, he only said to clean the laser head with a special cleaning CD to avoid skipping. Well I was pretty disappointed after the first hours of listening. You're video however nailed the problem and its simple solution. It took me only 20minutes to dismantle , lubricate the rail and rebuild everything and it works 100%. Not a single skip in 50 songs from differnet cd's. Thank you !
Thank you for the great video. I just replaced the belts on my Sony 300 a few weeks ago, which hadn't been used for quite a few years now. started loading in cds and one started to skip on the last track yesterday. Followed your instructions and now all is well.
Thanks Pal. I had the same problem with the skipping, was at the end of my tether. Then i found your video, i watched you while i repaired mine and voila. it works a treat Thank you so much...
Thanks! I just bought a nonworking 400-disk unit to pair with my working one, and thought that all was fine after I replaced the melted belts. But on testing it skipped on the higher tracks... guessing that all will be well after I locate some appropriate grease and finish following the procedure you kindly posted here for us. Good work!
I used to own one of these back in the day, I loved it and it worked great, I sold it to a guy going overseas some years ago, and last I heard it was still running great.
I successfully replaced all three belts to my CDP355 following this video. Nice details. NOTE: However, If you remove the Disc optic mechanism, in your attempt to replace two belts, be sure to replace it in the exact slot at the bottom of cabinet, as indicated in this video, otherwise you will have Disc failure each time the system retrieves or replaces a disc back into its assigned slot. Also, if you remove any ribbon cable, it is most important to insert correctly or this too can lead to failure of the system. This can be very tricky and frustrating. Ribbon cables are hard to find for this unit.
I was looking a 20+ year old boom box the other day with a CD player problem. When I got it apart I found that the laser gear had turned yellow and crumbled. No replacement gears to be had unless I could get someone to 3d print one for it. I noticed that the gear in this unit is also starting to turn yellow. Seems to be a real bad issue with the plastics used. I'm also seeing this problem in older video game console disc drives. Great video as always!
My first Philips tape deck had a gear that was red colored and crumbled and then another yellow one from the autostop that also crumbled, so i had to improvise something to get it to at least play a tape. I took a small motor and atached in place of the counter via a belt to drive the take up reel. Works like a charm. Needless to say that I would never buy another Philips boombox, tape deck, cd player or anything.
That video is excellent, but I have a couple questions/ suggestions. 1) because a Q-Tip is too thick to fit the cotton through the bearings for cleaning, I recommend to first remove a lot of the cotton on the end, so it can fit through. 2) As an alternative to the Q-Tip you can roll up a small piece of coffee filter into a rod shape (perhaps 2-3 inches long); saturate with alcohol and pull through the bearing. 3) I would think a light white lithium grease should be a good substitute for the Molkote that is not available locally. 4) You never showed the resolution of the stuck finger holding the disk. Was that connected to the gear you cleaned? Or to the belt-drive gears for rotating the CD tray?
Wow, this thing is INSANE, I've never seen anything like this. It should have came with a transparent case from the factory, just so you can see the mechanism inside
Rainy season is coming. I can feel it in the air. The Harley is parked for the next 6-7 months and there will be little to do on my days off but fix things around here.
All the musicbakery stuff is good. Thats why I have the library of it. When my production company was in full swing we bought a bunch of CDs from them and used it on all our commercial work.
If your changer still doesn't work after cleaning the gears try cleaning the black disk grabber, if these get dirty they put dirt on your disc and it will skip. It took me about 2 hours to find that fault 😅 Now it works just fine 😊
Hi great video. I was able to open mine up and clean it. But didn't fix the issue. I then noticed the stem of the plastic gear that goes on the motor for the laser was cracked. Could this be the cause of the skipping? If so where can I find a replacement for that part or something similar to fix it? Thanks.
GREAT posting. My 200 disc Sony changer has the same problem, plus more. The cd wobbles and sometimes the changer doesn't know there a cd in the magazine.
Recently got the 400 disc changer. I have the same issue with the music skipping. After inspection and greasing up a bit, I can't seem to place the box that has the laser reader on it exactly how it was before. The pin st the bottom, I can't seem to find where it goes.
What exactly am I supposed to use for the "grease"? I see molykote from Dupont but there is so many different kinds! I just need a small amount for this one job: will any silicone lubricant do it?
My jog/dial knob isn’t working properly. When the door is open it won’t spin the carousel around properly. It will actually move it sometimes back and forth or the reverse direction of what it’s supposed to go and doesn’t move very far either. Otherwise the player will play the discs fine. Any suggestions ?
I have the skipping issue with my 355, so I will see if I can work it out myself. I also have a flickering of the display. Any chance that can be repaired???
I followed your advise and cleaned the mechanism. Now the laser head is moving smoothly and the CD plays. But there was another problem. During music playback, an interrupt occurs for 1-2 seconds. This may occur once in 10 minutes or every 2 to 3 minutes. What could be the problem? Should I replace the laser head unit or there is a problem with the power supply? Thank you!
I have a sony CDP CX 450 with a weird problem....it works fine and plays CD's with no problems until it tries to load disk 140 (1-139 OK), where it will load the disk from slot 141 (but display 140), if I request disk 141 it will load 142, then it will not load any disks until 150 where it seems OK again. It also does this at about the 230 slot position. I've tried different CDs, cleaning lenses on the sensor, checked belts on motors and under the table - all seem fine. After a reset the problem is still there. ANy ideas why this night be happening? Thankyou.
Smashing job :-D, It seems very happy to play home burnt disks, so that lazer must be in a decent condition. I ask the drive to play track 1 then 20 repeatedly just to see if it takes a long time to track/focus correctly.
I have one of these and it still works flawlessly. It outlived the cd as a matter of fact as I stopped buying cd's. Modern cd's sound terrible, the odd exeption excluded. So all my old cd's are in this changer and they probably never come out again as long as the unit survives.
I feel the same way about my 200 disk. Working flawlessly, has never skipped a beat, and sounds fantastic. Have it, along with an old Cassette deck and DAT player on my all tube amplifier in my living room which I put on to listen to from time to time. The sound quality of this unit is excellent. I have not bought any CDs in years, but I still enjoy the ones I have. I have well over 200 CDs though, so what I did was make compliation CDs. Ripped the tracks from all my CDs and only the tracks that I like, leaving the crap tracks. Then I burned 200 80 minute disks to the brim. Actually I think it was only about 180 or so disks and the remaining 20 were willed with CDs that every track is good, you know the samplers and stuff that record companies put out that were already compilations of great stuff. I would love to get my hands on a 300 or 400 disk, just because I love the mechanical aspect. I am still contemplating making a plexiglass cabinet for my 200, and putting it on the top shelf so the operation can be observed while it works, because it is just cool to watch. Like an old Seaburg or Wurlitzer jukebox. That is something on my bucket list, to get an old juke and restore it. My neighbour has a really nice one, and they have no kids to leave it to. (only son died of cancer several years ago) so I have been trying to buy it but so far no luck.
I have a question to ask what kind of grease is that called and what kind of other grease can I use as I own the same one in the video and mine is making the cd's to skip even brand new disc skip please let me know thank you
Hello this is a great instruction. Bang on.... I have a problem with my Sony CDP-CX355 and wonder if you can help., It started out as the same problem and needing the belts replaced so I did that and replaces all 3 belts. But now the carousel is stuck when I push the Disc Eject button. I notice the disc does not eject from the play before the carousel starts turning ! The mechanism to remove the disc from the optic does not operate and the plastic "V" guide remains in the "down" position. Can you help....thanks Richard
Great instructional video. I own a SONY HCD-HPX7 Micro system with similar issues. Can you tell me if the plastic pinwheel you removed with your needle nose pliers a sold separately, and where can we purchase them? Mine has its teeth all grinded and skips the drive back and forth. Also what kind of lubricant are you using? Molykoat # ? Help anyone please. Thank you . Fred.
I know that this is 3 years old but I still have a question with my 300 it takes the disk but then doesn't play it just puts it back into the rack also my door won't open I've changed the belts everything seems to be fine just doesn't open any ideas
Off hand nothing jumps out at me. Been so long since i serviced these units. Been out of the repair business now 18 years and only see the odd one now.
I have one of these with the same issue, I tried your fix but the problem remains. I verified the laser assembly does move into its home position if moved manually and then turned on and put in a disc. It can find the start of a track ok, even if set to another track prior to 1 (such as using 1 disc and set to shuffle). When watching the gear during play, there seems to be a slight "jog" or movement backwards after moving "forwards". I have made a video of this movement.
hey do you know if a buggered up tooth on a dvd player's laser sled gear would cause it to crap up at the same spot in a movie every time? Is there a quick way to varify this without having to sit through an entire movie before I sell a unit on craigslist? Im guilty of throwing out possibly good dvd players out of pure lazyness of needing to sit through an entire dvd just to test it to varify if it is bad or not. I had a player that appeared to freas up at the same spot in movies sometimes and sometimes play a entire movie just fine. My worry was that I'd sell it and end up hearing back from the custumor a week later saying its crapping out on them.
Im thinking probably too many variables but the fundamental question remains, would a messed up tooth cause a dvd player to frees up at the same spot, every time, on every movie?
Nice video, one of mine doing same, dam thing is full lol 😂 did the belts a while back, but it looks like the shaft is sticking now very similar to your video, I thought they were scratched but upon playing them in a different machine they work okay so it must be 300 disc changer.
I have a CDP-CX55 300 disc changer and it stopped working all together . I had to take it out from the cabinet to fix one of the four wheels underneath as it gave in. When I put back the disc changer, low and behold it just did not work at all, stopped . It`s completely dead . Any hint what could be the problem? It does not switch on . Electrical current goes in as I checked the cord. . I viewed your videos on fixing certain problems, but my problem is not included unfortunately. That is why I decided to comment . Thank you.
I had the problem of discs skipping . I followed your video cleaned the gears and lubricated the laser rod. It now plays without skipping however I obviously did somethding wrong when I was putting it back togerther. When the arm reaches out and grabs the disc I get loud snapping sound. Actually it occurs in a sequence of 3. I cannot figure out why it is happining although I can each step when it happens.
Thanks for Ur videos. I have a sony cxp-cx450. It has worked perfectly for a year. Now it will only play the first title then repeats that track it wont "continue play" It will "shuffle play". I have followed your instructions and cleaned the laser tracking gears at 7:58 . But the repeat play problem persists, Can you help me find/fix the problem?
I have one with the same gear, and I believe it has a similar issue. I think it is the laser though, because it skips if I tap it lightly or set a raw speaker unit on top of it and turn up the bass. Any thoughts as to what might be wrong?
Mine is currently having issues, it will load the CD, won't spin it, unload and repeat. It does this a few times until it eventually gives up and says there is no disc in. Any ideas?
I have found that the gears on the laser transport of my Sony 200 disc changer are damaged and not meshing properly. Do you know where I could purchase a new set of these gears?
Mine skipped, after a few tries, it turns out it was a slight buildup of old grease on the rack, I cleaned it with alcohol and a toothpick, seems to work well now.
I have one of these and today it started behaving badly. Blue light blinks but door won't open and makes an unusual noise. I took all the cd's out thinking one was jammed but that's not it. What kind of place would you recommend I take it for repairs? I love this CD player.
Just picked up a cx450 that has been sitting for a bit, have the exact same problem. Only plays 22 seconds and then restarts. I'll tear into it tommorow and hopefully that will resolve the issue!
A year late but it might help someone else. A table error is almost always worn out belts. The belts are pretty easy to replace and run you about 8 bucks free shipping on ebay.
Hi I hope you're ok Please could you help me, I need to glue a cracked nylon gear (it's the rewind & counter belt pulley gear in the wm-d3) can you recommend any glue for nylon gears. Thanks in advance
F B. Molykote pg-641 , for some reason isn't available in the USA, do you have another kind of grease that can be used, or a place where we can aquire this grease?
I want to tell you something I have an Equlaizer SG-9500 I bought it from America as much as 110V and I live in Norway. Can I convert it and install my internal tuner to it, from the inside and the reason I also have several devices I want to connect to it Please help me🤗🤗
@@danielsandoval1552 NOT YET BECAUSE USUALLY BY THE TIME A PLAYER HAS A FAILED OPTICAL BLOCK IT GOES TO THE RECYCLE CENTER. NOBODY FIXES THESE THINGS ANYMORE.
This is a common problem with a lot of cd mecks, you are on the right track using Molkote grease . On the sled shaft i have found cleaning with mag wheel cleaner ( this also polishes the sled shaft). Cleaning the gear train gear by gear is also a good idea. I also use a good contact cleaner to remove the offending dirt. A new set of drive belts and most faults are fixed. Cleaning the laser assemble a cotton bud and if you breath on the end of the bud and gently clean the optical assembly. I have found this works best .
@@zman6288 I use a black graphite grease and a very light smear on the sled shafts. there are also several greases desighned for plastic or nylon gears and again just a small amount, easy to apply with a clean cottenbud. to remove old grease, a good contact cleaner works best to remove the grease. never had a problem in all the years of VCR and the like servicing.

Which CD changer do you recommend to buy now? i want one
I have the Yamaha CD-C600. Probably the best out there. You may read about it, listen and get one for you!
I have a question to ask what kind of grease is that called and what kind of other grease can I use as I own the same one in the video and mine is making the cd's to skip even brand new disc skip please let me know thank you
Molakote? Grease I'm having a hard time finding it. And there's a couple to choose from. Is there a certain number to go with? Great video, thank you.
Which molykote grease should I use? They have multiple different types of Grease. I'm going to assume they're plastic Grease EM-30L?
GREAT videos!!! Any recommendations for a substitute for the MolyKote grease? Thanks!!!
Found the answer below.
Where can I purchase the lubricant to grease the rail?
Great instructional video. I own a SONY HCD-HPX7 Micro system with similar issues. Can you tell me if the plastic pinwheel you removed with your needle nose pliers a sold separately, and where can we purchase them? Mine has its teeth all grinded and skips the drive back and forth. Also what kind of lubricant are you using? Molykoat # ? Help anyone please. Thank you .
Fred.
Great video.... I can't seem to find molykote grease, what substitution would you suggest. Thanks
I have a sony cdp-cx53 but it's not releasing the disc when i open the door or change to the next disc..
I thought cds skipped because they were dirty or the laser was dirty. Could I just open the chassis and turn a leaf blower on it?
💯love your videos! Beyond informative! You rock!
Excellent video. You gave me hope and inspiration.
hey do you know if a buggered up tooth on a dvd player's laser sled gear would cause it to crap up at the same spot in a movie every time?
Well you can take it apppart and visually inspect the gears for damaged teeth.
Nice video, one of mine doing same, dam thing is full lol 😂 did the belts a while back, but it looks like the shaft is sticking now very similar to your video, I thought they were scratched but upon playing them in a different machine they work okay so it must be 300 disc changer.
I have one that I would liked fixed, can you repair it? Its a sony 400, plays but the carriage barely spins...
Thank you.
10000x thank you wow this is exactly what the problem was with mine
I had the problem of discs skipping . I followed your video cleaned the gears and lubricated the laser rod. It now plays without skipping however I obviously did somethding wrong when I was putting it back togerther. When the arm reaches out and grabs the disc I get loud snapping sound. Actually it occurs in a sequence of 3. I cannot figure out why it is happining although I can each step when it happens.
Thanks for Ur videos.
I have a sony cxp-cx450. It has worked perfectly for a year.
Now it will only play the first title then repeats that track it wont "continue play"
It will "shuffle play". I have followed your instructions and cleaned
the laser tracking gears at 7:58 . But the repeat play problem persists,
Can you help me find/fix the problem?
I have one with the same gear, and I believe it has a similar issue. I think it is the laser though, because it skips if I tap it lightly or set a raw speaker unit on top of it and turn up the bass. Any thoughts as to what might be wrong?
Never mind, the gear had multiple broken teeth in a row.
Probably the encoder switch on tge dial is dirty
Wow you make kool vids. Explain how it works in detail. Neat
Mine is currently having issues, it will load the CD, won't spin it, unload and repeat. It does this a few times until it eventually gives up and says there is no disc in. Any ideas?
Laser or spindle motor.
What about a player where carousel
Works and picks up Cd ok but doesn’t play CDs in slots above CD #200 on 400 cd changer? Belts look ok
Hey i got a sony cx333es player like that sometimes when it loads a disc it keeps trying to reload it
I have found that the gears on the laser transport of my Sony 200 disc changer are damaged and not meshing properly. Do you know where I could purchase a new set of these gears?
You may have to find an old cd player and cannibalize it.
@@12voltvids That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for replying.
I have the 200 unit.... picked it up at the local good will for 24 bucks.... plays perfectly...
I also have the 200. Traded a 5 disk unit for it to the local house pimp.
Mine skipped, after a few tries, it turns out it was a slight buildup of old grease on the rack, I cleaned it with alcohol and a toothpick, seems to work well now.
Which type of Greece should be used for plastic gears?
molykote or lithium grease
Nice video my mother owns this exact Sony disc changer. I'll know how to fix it if it ever gets these faults.
I have one of these and today it started behaving badly. Blue light blinks but door won't open and makes an unusual noise. I took all the cd's out thinking one was jammed but that's not it. What kind of place would you recommend I take it for repairs? I love this CD player.
There is probably a belt in the open mechanism, and it just needs a new one.
Just picked up a cx450 that has been sitting for a bit, have the exact same problem. Only plays 22 seconds and then restarts. I'll tear into it tommorow and hopefully that will resolve the issue!
I have a 300 disk changer and sometimes it give me a "Table Error" What would be the fix for this?
A year late but it might help someone else. A table error is almost always worn out belts. The belts are pretty easy to replace and run you about 8 bucks free shipping on ebay.
Thank you for uploading this video!
Excelent repair, en ocasiones el MOTOR SLEED se AISLA con el BIOXIDO de CARBONO y provoca problemas de TRACKIN 🤔🤔
Very helpful video!
Hi I hope you're ok
Please could you help me, I need to glue a cracked nylon gear (it's the rewind & counter belt pulley gear in the wm-d3) can you recommend any glue for nylon gears. Thanks in advance
Technics Guy
I have not had luck glueing nylon gears. I fused a few together with heat.
This was exactly the video I was looking for. What grease exactly is that you are using and who sells it ?
what is the name of the grease you use, tx and great video, fixed mine, but still need to grease
It is Molkote PG-641 grease
F B. Molykote pg-641 , for some reason isn't available in the USA, do you have another kind of grease that can be used, or a place where we can aquire this grease?
I use car bearing grease works awesome too
@@12voltvidsSweet finally found it in the comments. Thank you.
I want to tell you something I have an Equlaizer SG-9500 I bought it from America as much as 110V and I live in Norway. Can I convert it and install my internal tuner to it, from the inside and the reason I also have several devices I want to connect to it Please help me🤗🤗
Can you tell me What kind of grease did you use on the parts?
Mollykote
@@12voltvids is white lithium grease a good substitute ? If not, what is ?
Great Video! Very helpful! Thanks!
What can I use as a substitute for molykote grease ?
Lithium white grease.
@@12voltvids thank you from a fellow Canadian
I just got one of these fairly cheap and the belts have turned to goo and I'm having to clean all of that up...
I have the same machine. The disc loads but it will not spin. It tries to load multiple ti.es but will not spin
Probably the spindle motor is bad.
Easy to fix? I love your videos
I have a Sony 200 that is skipping can you tell me what it would cost to repair that thanks
A skipping CD is 1 of 2 things. 1) worn spindle motor, or 2) weak optical pickup, or both.
@@12voltvids do you have a video that shows how to replace a worn spindle motor and a week Optical pickup
@@danielsandoval1552 NOT YET BECAUSE USUALLY BY THE TIME A PLAYER HAS A FAILED OPTICAL BLOCK IT GOES TO THE RECYCLE CENTER. NOBODY FIXES THESE THINGS ANYMORE.
@@12voltvids well thanks for your time I enjoyed your video though take care
What type of molykote greese ?
Yellow.
What kind of molkote grease should I be ordering? Thank you
@@zman6288 I use a black graphite grease and a very light smear on the sled shafts. there are also several greases desighned for plastic or nylon gears and again just a small amount, easy to apply with a clean cottenbud. to remove old grease, a good contact cleaner works best to remove the grease. never had a problem in all the years of VCR and the like servicing.
