Balvenie 14yr old Caribbean Cask review #57 with The Whiskey Novice

- So, now that we've established that this series is a look at some single malt, Scotch whiskys, aged between 3 and 16 years but not including 10 or 12 year olds...let's have a go at another 14 year old. This time a Balvenie. Or should I say...a The Balvenie?!
Anyway...14 years. Some/most of that in ex Bourbon casks with some "extra" time in Caribbean Rum casks. You'd expect me to like this wouldn't you?
Did I?
Enjoy.

Cheers.
Interesting review thanks Jim you've saved me a few quid! It's what I call an air freshener whisky- good nose but you wouldn't drink it
Good description.
Hello Jim & all....tried this for the first time at the London whisky show a few years ago and got a beautiful palate of cadburys rum & raisin chocolate, rushed out and bought a couple of bottles and was disappointed with every drop... alas a taste experience never to be repeated.
Cheers Jonny. Yeah I've had that happen. Tried a sample, loved it, bought the bottle, disappointed. It's both bizarre and annoying.
I am not sure why I enjoy this as much as I do. Rum& Raisin yes, but not too sweet for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Cheers Jon.
The whisky, like the Mrs, didn’t scratch that itch😂 Damn, that intro made me have great big belly laugh - great work and another top notch review. Cheers mate.
Cheers Al 😁
Good review, Jim... Balvenie expressions have often been, for me, like taking out a beautiful las who is interested in me, but is boring ,- despite her eagerness, and I just can't justify calling her out again. Cheers!
😄😄 love it. Great analogy. Cheers.
Wow, great job painting the picture. I can understand this!🤣
I thank you my friend for a good belly laugh with that intro. Your expression could win an academy award. I also agree with you, Leejay, and Menno this is a pass. But, you are saving folks hard earned money by at least making them aware they should try this before they buy.
Thank you Bud. Really glad to know I'm not alone here.
Cheers my friend.
No sugarcoating here (although for the actual whisky that might not have been a bad thing 🤔). Always a pity when a whisky kicks of with lovely nose but the palate and finish don't deliver. Surprising comparison. Cheers Jim
Beaten again lol
Cheers Menno. Yeah I struggled a little for this comparison but, after a few against the Balvenie, it was actually the Auchentoshan that felt similar. Doesn't smell similar, doesn't taste similar but it feels similar to me. Not a fan of either.
Great job jim sorry to hear of your itch... Plenty of cream fella.... Not had a Balvenie for a long time Jim. Your right their all about the nose... Lovely... But that's it and of course their too much money... Cheers fella
Cheers Alan. Aye it's a shame really. Thanks mate.
Same as Leejay...had it at beginning of my journey, it was ok but nothing that would shake the earth under my legs...
Try before you buy
Yes indeed Kresimir. Cheers mate.
What? No intro .... wait ... that's surprising... Well done Jim.
And the review itself? Caribbean cask = rum = hesitation (for me it is, for I do not like the smell or taste of rum*). And you haven't taken away that hesitation, so thanks again.
The disappearance of the rum nose when entering the palet sounds as good news at first but with the ovrell disappearance of almost everything, the hesitation has grown to a no-buy. There is plenty of non rum (whiskies to explore. Great job, Jim. Thanks!
*) disclaimer... I mean here the 'regular' rum flavour and taste. It seems there are rums that taste surprisingly 'un-rummish'... but I haven't had those, so I can not judge them.
Thanks Frank. Yeah, this was a strange one. I've spent quite a bit of time with this bottle and just fails to impress me.
I haven't spent a lot of time with rum itself because, like yourself, from what I've tried I'm not a huge fan but, this could have worked better. I could see how a good rum influence would work well as a finish. Just doesn't do it for this Balvenie in my opinion.
Cheers mate.
Frank, you might want to give Severin xo a try. Not the biggest rum fan either but that one's pretty good. A whisky Drinker's rum, so to speak
@@maltymission Thanks Menno. I'll keep that in mind👍
Not a bad dram, just not one I’ll be replacing when it finishes.
Thanks for the review Jim; good intro. I've shied away from THE Balvenie whiskies as I don't think that they deliver very good value for their cost. Here's another one that I'll pass up on.
Good call Peter. Cheers mate.
Hope you put the cream in the fridge to cool it down? 🤣 another fab review Jim ...
Always Hellen...always 😂😂.
Thank you.
Nice review Jim and I have to agree with your assessment as the recent bottle I bought of this was a disappointment. Maybe 3-4 years ago I actually liked the Balvenie Carab Cask when I was focusing on 40-43 ABV offerings, early in my journey. This latest bottle seemed much more salty, so much that it just overwhelmed everything else (I used to remember the fruity nature of the earlier bottle). Maybe the recent batches have changed a bit? To make matters worse, many stores here now charge ~$90 for this... Don't believe I will be buying this one again...
Cheers Drew. Yeah I didn't really hit on the price for this one but, like most Balvenie, too expensive for what you get.
Another great review Jim. I had a dram of this last weekend I thought it was really nice, however, I had had half a bottle of Prosecco, 4 gin n tonics, and half of a bottle of wine by the time I got to this lol
😄😄 cheers Lee. Yeah that's pretty much what it would take to make this impressive.
Thanks mate.
Have had a couple of Rum cask finished Whisky's (not this one) and they weren't my thing. Compared to other choices Balviene prices higher than many that check most or all of the geek boxes so did not make it past the 12 until just recently. Found a ok price for the 15 single sherry cask. It is NCF NC and 47.8% so it's more in line delivering the level of quality/price balance. It's very good but only if you can find it for a good price is it worth it compared to so many other choices. Pretty much everything else they offer is out of line on cost. Cheers Jim
Cheers Tim. Yeah that was something I didn't mention this time....price. Balvenie know how to charge, and this one is no exemption.
Lol love your intros but TMI 😳 I’m Lacking in exploring scotch lately. But thanks to your videos I know what to get next and what to avoid (for now lol) cheers 👍🥃
😄😄 cheers Antonio. Well it's only an opinion as you know but, from whag everyone is saying in the comments, it would appear I'm not alone with my views on this one.
Whiskey Novice I’ll try it but maybe not rush out and get one just yet
Hi Jim. Tried this a while ago and all I can say is that I am glad I didn't buy a fulll bottle..Its not worth the money. Cheers Jim.
Cheers David. Glad I'm not alone in finding this one disappointing. If the comments are anything to go by...most people agree.
Auchentoshan 12 is one of the few major disappointments I've encountered in my early whisky journey, so I'll likely steer clear of Balvenie Carribean. I do really enjoy Balvenie Double Wood, however.
Great review Jim tried the 14 at the beginning of my journey and agree even then nothing really special. Oh hows the itch? lol
😂😂 cheers Leejay. If I could just find my cream 😂. Glad it's not just me who finds this whisky a little under par.
Did ye get yersl' a wee tube of cortisone? ;). Th'on's a powerful expensive proposition over here. For the same money I could pick up a Lagavulin 16. Thanks for saving me from an expensive disappointment, Jimbo. P.S - my boys love the live streams where they see all your guitars on the wall in the background. :)
Cheers Richard. Always keep the itchy cream close to hand 😉🤫😄
Thanks mate.
Think I'll give that one a miss Jim 👍👍
Not as good as I thought it would be. Cheers Neil.
🤣 great intro
This 14 yo is not my favorite Rum cask finish from The BALVENIE I have to say (& the most "commercial" one imho), I prefered the Cuban Selection to this & even much more the 17 yo from 2008 I recently opened (yummy) & even the 14 yo Golden Cask (old travel retail expression) though it can be a bit challenging...(more interesting too because of its 47,5 % abv). PS: A bit perplex with your comparison choice of the Auchentoshan 12 yo I have to say too (can't get rid/used to that terrible strong geranium note in that one on my side, very different from the Balvenie imho, but it's just my opinion based on not too recent 12 yo ones yes). Cheers, Jim !
Cheers Greg. I struggled to find a comparison for this one because it didn't perform very well. As I said to Menno, I don't think for one second that these 2 whiskys smell or taste the same. They just feel similar to my palate. Really not a fan of either (especially the Auchentoshan). I still feel the Balvenie has a lovely, tropical nose but that's about it. The Auchentoshan....nothing 😄. Can't get with it at all.
Thanks my friend.
@@WhiskeyNovice No problem, hope you'll come across a more satisfying whisky for your next review, as it has to remain a pleasure ! Cheers my friend !
I agree - not impressed
Cheers Jason.
