Baron Samedi is the only Lowa that is married, to Mama Brigitte a redheaded Irish woman. They both look after the dead, Samedi will happily play jokes on the other Lowa but he takes his guide of the dead souls seriously. Brigitte and Samed are both extremely sexual and having experienced first hand grief, nothing makes you want to feel vitality more than sex and the bringing of a new life. Samedi is more reserved and takes no sides in the mortal world yet Brigitte is the Lowa to ask for justice or vengeance. Many people think these are the same but justice is what you get and vengeance is what you ask for and what you ask has a price to be paid. Most people keep saying that Samedi is met at crossroads yet that is usually Papa Legba, he’s like an old blues player incarnation of Samedi yet isn’t one of his incarnations. Samedi will happily play jokes on the other Lowa but he takes his task ask the guide of the souls of the dead seriously, Legba is like his con artist father who, silver tongues will trick the living out of everything they own. The crossroads is an ancient and important symbol, you have four roads to travel, Samedi actually only escorts you one way or the other between the living and the dead. Legba is met when you need to open up all access to all Lowa and all knowledge, knowing everything doesn’t make your outcome any easier, in fact it makes it harder. Samedi is in top hat and coat takes with a cane that pounds the first strike of the ground to start the bear. You’d know him if you saw him. Legba is tattily dressed with a guitar and dogs, he is the one that will smile wide and get out his marked deck of cards and fleece you dry. It’s actually Legba that is associated with big black roosters (think the old blues song about my rooster crowing), it’s not Samedi. Samedi may take on three faces like Irish witches like his wife have throughout the ages, but actually NONE of them are sadistic and would be satisfied by an animal bring burned alive. The three faces are death, his guidance of your soul as you become part of the Earth again and rebirth. You can choose to believe me or not. The nearest I’ve been to Haiti is the Dominican and I’m a white Irish woman. I died in a coma twice last year and came out of it talking about Lowas, Orishas and mumbling lots of other words I had never known. I recall the ‘people’ I met on my fight to stay alive and I remember well the bargains I struck. I had no idea what Voodoo and Santeria were other than scary words about black magic. I only recently saw a documentary about Haitian Voodoo shot in the 1970’s by the BBC about either and I fucking fainted. I don’t practice or research these religions because I’m sick of hearing about the dark side: however I know for sure it all comes back around again and those we have lived before we will live again.
So, I thought Papa Legba was more to do with being at the crossroads between life and death, or just transitions in general. Is he separate, or just another personification like the others mentioned?
