Helios 44 comparison. Which version is the best? (Vintage lens test)

- There are many different versions of the iconic soviet lens, but which one should you buy? In this video I compare the 'Silver' Helios 44 to the regular 44, the well known 44-2 and the later 44m-4. You can judge for yourself which Helios is the best, or maybe there isn't any difference at all?

Thanks for the video! No wonder why the 44-2 is so sought after for the price. The bokeh is insane. Look at the difference in color and the depth. Other differences might be there, but these for the price are a no brainer...Also, I find Pixel Peepers annoying on something like the 44-2. It's a great little choice. To me like the Shure Sm57 of lenses.
I had a Zenit 11 with a Helios 44-M4, when I was living in Cuba. For more than 10 years I used this camera. ( 1987-1998)
Wow, that's great!
Hi Ohjajohh, nice video and good to see shots from those 44 series lenses back to back. Do you have a favourite? Visually I quite like silver lenses - that has noting to do with image quality, I just like the look of them. I don't think you can go too far wrong with any of the 44's, particularly if someone doesn't have many vintage lenses, any 44 would be a good addition to their collection, without searching for the usually more expensive 13 blade models.
I agree, any 44 is a good addition.
I actually did this test for myself to see which Helios to keep and which to sell (because who needs 4 Helios lenses?)
The lenses I kept:
-'Silver' 13 bladed Helios, because it's rare/more valuable and I think it looks cool
-Helios 44-2 because I inherited it from my grandfather
-Helios 44-m4 because on the outside it's different from the other lenses
So I sold the 'black 44 KMZ' even though I think it has the best colors and contrast. But I didn't want to part with my other Helios lenses, so this one had to go. (I actually exchanged it for a Takumar 200mm f4, a video might come later this summer)
@@ohjajohh That seems like good thinking - definitely have to keep the one you inherited. I bet the Takumar 200mm is nice.
Is the 44 helios with 8 blades (MMZ) still a good substitute for the silver 13 blades?
Yeah it's also a great lens!
Приветствую 😊 Спасибо за обзор 😊 👍 🤝 🔔 👣 🍵 😊
Your style of comparing, with the side by side images and the sliding transitions, is brilliant. I wish everyone would adopt your techniques.
As someone new to Helios I’m learning there are many different ‘models’ within the 44M. Over the years I believe there were a few (2-3) factory locations.
While they are each stamped 44M there are ways of figuring it out by font, logo style, and where they place the serial number.
I’m sure even within exact same lens models there will be variations but I’ve yet to hear anyone mention they have a ‘bad’ one!
A very exciting lens with a history that offers just enough details and mystery to keep ones interest.
Thanks for the kind words :)
Nice video :) especially the way four lenses entered and they left, the intro and outro are so immersive and great to watch...Helios ❤️
ヘリオス44 、私も持っています。綺麗な風景でした😊
どうもありがとうございます
Great comparison video! Best I've seen.
Helios 44-2 58mm is very good lens even though they are produced under the Soviet system. I think the color contrast differs from production year as coating material change. And other features should be the same because of optical lens design can't be changed easily.
The best version i ever tried was Helios 44 (13 blades). Helios 44m7 is also great and probably the sharpest of all.
I have got valuable tips with H44 from your video..!!!
Thanks for sharing
This is the best lens comparison format that I've seen. Both informative but also very pleasing presentation.Great transitions, fantastic graphics texts etc. And the close ups 😍. At the end I forgot what I was watching, I was mesmerized by the lens details. Talent shines whatever the subject may be, well done !👏👏👏
Thanks a lot
nice video thanks for sharing...
The silver one has the nicest colors, let's say a bit Kodak-esque, that is fairly similar to the Auto Chinon 200 f3.5. Later versions give a sharper image.
Great sample shots and comparison. I only have the 44M-4 and I love it.
Excellent review! I have both the 44 (13 blades) and the 44-2 (KMZ's). I love them both!
Thanks! You can't go wrong with either Helios lens.
unique😊
Your channel is consistently supported! Utuber! Something about your show i just keep coming back. I see you worked hard on your content. What's red and 4 corners? the button i pressed at the end.

Nice video! Happy to be the current owner of this actual black KMZ 44 🙂
Veel plezier ermee :)
Lol, EVERY YT comparison of the Helios 44 comes to very different conclusions. Just comes down to if you got a good copy or not I guess.
True, but maybe it also has a bit to do with personal preference, adapter and camera used. But I agree, sometimes I read reviews of people saying avoid this and that version while I think to myself that they're pretty good. But in general I think all Helios 44 versions are nice. They're a piece of history and can give you great looking images
Great video! 👍
감사합니다~
awesome) What camera did you use?
Thnx, I used a Sony A7 III and some extension tubes for the intro and outtro.
GREAT review and compare. We splitting hairs here. All versions look fine
Thanks for watching. Yes, you can't go wrong with either version
