Marketing majors always learn about these 2 marketing mistakes:
    1. The Chevy Nova, which didn’t sell in Spanish speaking markets as No Va in Spanish means, “it doesn’t go.”
    2. Exxon had a tiger as its mascot, which did not do well in South Asia because tigers mauling people is a real problem there.

Per was a detergent for the dishes here in Belgium. It was rated both "best product" as well as "best buy" by the consumer organisation each time they tested the detergents. A few years ago, they decided to rebrand the product to "Mir".
Obviously, rebranding is always a difficult choice. If done well, it can boost sales. But if the marketing isn't done well, then it obviously becomes a train wreck.
In the case of Per/Mir, the product is hardly for sale anywhere any more, even though the quality and price are amazing, because nobody buys it.
Why you ask? Because they never ever publicly announced the rebranding. No huge advertisement campaign on radio, tv, newspaper or internet. Not even a small one. The name changed, and that's that. Not even the label read "formerly known as Per".
And they probably still wonder why they are failing with their product.

Yeah, Mojo didn't mention the other thing that happened when Fiat sent those love letters. Sure, some single women were sufficiently scared they had stalkers, but it was the married women that really got the brunt of that campaign. There was never an apology made to those women who were subjected to abuse for the 8 days it took for the Fiat branded follow-up letter to arrive saying 'haha that lover was actually your new car, aren't we clever'. This ended up being almost a class action, not sure what they have in Madrid but a whole lot of people sued and Fiat was 'fined'. Then they did the 'female co-pilot manual' in 2016. I don't know how it gets through so many people.

Edsel didn't suffer from poor build quality, it did poorly because all four of the brand's models were overpriced and offered nothing new compared to their Ford and Mercury counterparts. The Citation, when fully loaded (with all options), toward the end of it's run was just under the price range of Lincoln which defeated the whole purpose of being a mid-level luxury vehicle. Even the cheapest offering, the Edsel Ranger, was more expensive than a decently equipped Mercury Medalist. Ultimately, Ford already had a brand to compete in the mid-level market against GM's Pontiac and Oldsmobile, Chrysler's Dodge and DeSoto offerings and that brand, was, obviously; Mercury.

O.K. here's the thing, I see alot of these type of lists and they all have New Coke as the worst decision made by a company. However leading up to this Pepsi had gained ground against Coke and was threatening to take over the #1 cola spot. Coke came up with the New Coke idea making it taste very similar to pepsi, knowing the public would be outraged and reject the change. This gave Coke the opportunity to bring back the old Coke as Coca-Cola Classic putting the idea that something that tasted like Pepsi is not as good as something that tastes like Coke.
The result of this stunt is that the gap between Coke sales vs. Pepsi sales increased dramatically.

Unfortunately for Mickey D's, the USA's only real competition, the USSR, pulled out in protest of the Olympics being held in the U.S. As a result, the US won 174 medals, including 83 Gold. Coke - unable to learn from its mistakes, obviously - had a "MagiCan" promotion in 1990, where some cans of Coke had rolled-up dollar bills that would rise up from the opening when you opened it. But they filled the cans with water that was not safe to drink, to make them weigh as much as an actual can of Coke. They got nailed for false advertising since the cans claimed to have Coke inside. I had a friend who stocked vending machines, and he could instantly tell a prize can from a regular one because there was a weight difference. The promotion lasted just a few weeks.
