I simply like the way you explained the steps. Clear and right to the point! Love the sound from your machine too. Your video is my favourite of all videos teaching one how to sew a tote bag. Thank you very much!

Thank you for posting this simple tote as the directions were easy to follow. I used a canvas material and created a design using fabric paints then placed a printed cotton fabric on the reverse sewing them together then continued on with the directions. So much you can do with this project....add a pocket on the front panel before joining if you wish. My project turned out so well, love it!
UPDATE: I've made two of them so far and they turned out fantastic. Very happy with them thanks for sharing!! Now with plastic bags starting to be banned in stores and having to bring your own this is the perfect solution, easy to make tote bags that are reusable and washable. Only thing I wouldn't bother with the X in the strap I think just doing the box all around the strap is good enough. Just one less step making it even easier. Thank you so much for this simple easy to follow instructional video. I will be making these today!! :)
Thank you for posting this video. It is detailed and you show every step with no short cuts. I look forward to watching your other videos and making properly sewn projects!
Hi there....so first off I am not a sewer....I am a paper crafter and I sew on paper. I needed a bag for something and I decided to search videos and came across yours. I watched, stopped the video and made one following your instructions. The only issue I had was my fabric was in two pieces so I had to sew the bottom together...I used the French seam method you showed. After sewing the sides of the bag as directed and then forming the inverted corners into triangles it was a bit bunchy in the tip of the triangle but I got it to work. I also cut a rectangle of heavy cardboard and wrapped in black fabric to push down into the base of the bag so it would sit flat standing. Thank you so much for your awesome instructions and I love the French seams....it does look so professional. gina

This is by far the best video for a simple unlined tote and it's years since I saw a french seam being used. Question: Did you anchor the triangles inside at the bottom ot did you just leave them free. I feel that stuff may collect against them. Let me know please.

Fantastic easy video thank you. Please can you tell me where you got your great ruler, I have searched and cannot find one, or perhaps its correct name ?.
Hello Patricia, I purchased the ruler many many years ago. I am not sure where but either at Joann's or a quilt store. The ruler is 3 1/2" x 12". On the ruler it says: Designed by Trudie Hughes and the name along the bottom edge says "speedy".
TFS! Just a question regarding the bottom corners of the bag. I have made tote bags in the past and because I lined them. I cut the excess off the corners inside, so there would be no bulk. I see that you did not cut the fabric off the corners inside of the bag and wonder about these corners being in the way, when you put anything in the bag. What about tacking the corners down? HI there, First off..thanks for a great tutorial. I was just wondering if there was a way to 'french seam' the box bottom corners? as if i weever to cut them there would be raw edges visible
Great tutorial. What if your fabric has a one way pattern and you have to use two pieces of fabric which means a bottom seam to join the two, otherwise you will end up with patterns on one side being upside down. So can this be made with two pieces and still use french seams?
Okay....this lady knows how to give directions (with measurements).....THANK YOU!

+Rina Culora Thanks for watching the video on making a simple tote bag. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Really easy and complete video, at what point would I incorporate a front or inside pocket? Please advice and measurement, thanks done one already.
If you want to add a pocket, you would add it before sewing together any pieces to either the inside or the outside.
Hi. Thanks for your question. You should be able to do a French seam on the bottom before you go onto the other steps.
Hi! PERFECTLY SIMPLE tutorial! One question, how much fabric will I need per tote? Thanks. :)
You can make this tote bag with 1/2 yard of fabric. I hope you try to make one. They are super simple.
