  • This is our first time being able to speak to a direct descendant of two of the builders of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Cut-Offs. Join us as we meet Frances Burke Keating, the great-granddaughter and great-niece of Timothy Burke and John Burke, respectively, who built Sections 1 and 5 of the New Jersey Cut-Off, respectively. Timothy's construction company also built Section 7 of the Pennsylvania Cut-Off near Hop Bottom, PA. John Burke was involved with Section 5 of the Pennsylvania Cut-Off, but was not given any direct credit for that, as that section was built by the Flickwir & Bush Construction Company. Fran and husband, Dom, who was interviewed in Part 35, also give us more background on the Burke brothers and their history.

Hello Chuck, My hat is off to you sir. Thank you for your videos and the documentation of the Lackawanna Cut-Off history. The interviews are priceless. We''re one step closer to Amtrak service restoration thanks to you and a myriad of other individuals. I was thrilled with the recent announcement from Rep. Matt Cartwright, and Senator Bob Casey. Keep pushing! Happy New Year!

Great to see a different wrinkle to this huge story by adding a descendant of the builders. I would assume that there are a lot more stories like Frances' out there...Thanks Chuck!

Could be. But Fran's is the first I've come across so far involving the contractors. Don't forget that the Burke brothers have been dead for more than a century. And unless the corporate records of some of these contractors have been preserved, no-one will have any information except that which has been passed down through the families. For example, I've tried Lincoln Bush's family, to no avail. It's fortunate that Fran and Dom still live in the area. For families that have spread to the four winds, it's easy for all of the history to get lost forever. That's what made this episode unique.

I was on the golden gate bridge the day that photo was taken, elbow to elbow the entire length.

Wow, I've read that the bridge was rolling around and people were getting sick. Is that true?

Hello, absolutely not true, there wasn't any movement at all, just like walking on a regular street. I can tell you this much, that crowd wasn't moving. It took me an hour to move about 400 yards. PS love the channel, it's great. @@LackawannaCutOff

I am very inspired by your videos. I watch everything from the camera angles to the transitions. I recently learned that for a couple of years, in the newspapers, the name "Lackawanna cut-off" referred to the Netcong extension of the Sussex Branch. Of course that changed later. I've taken an interest in Kay's Farm, which the railroad had to negotiate a price with.
