I worked on a documentary about Oliver Reed many years ago, and every interview we did, people only had a kind word to say about him, even his first wife. What a great man.
One of my favourite films. I have it on DVD. Adventure comedy sums it up well. Of its time. Great locations. Groovy drumming! The dynamic between Oliver Reed and the elephant is great, apparently he did make the effort to bond with Lucy off camera and it shows.
The story is much deeper than at first start. Part parody. Some subtle anti-war, as well as humanitarian and empathetic vibes. Seeing people as people no matter the uniform when kindness is shown sincerely. Desperate situations understood for what they are. Sad, too.
Fun film, obviously not a gramme of realism, but enjoyable, like so many films of the era. All you haters, nitpicking the film, just take chill pill, or better still, just dont watch it.
Remember watching this as a kid with my parents and brothers BBC1 after Summertime Special one Saturday Night , must have been the early 80s, looking forward to watching it again....
Una magnífica película en todos los sentidos de principio a fin. El elenco es de primera en hacer sus roles de forma magistral y la trama más original en todos los aspectos. Saludos y bendiciones a todos los cinéfilos de corazón desde Venezuela.
Nice and gentle Austrians welcoming allied escaped pow... I'm not sure i'm buying it! For sure they would have turned them out to the first available polizei! These people almost made us believe that Beethoven was Austrian and Hit-ler was German!
The actor (James Donald) who plays the vicar or priest (Padre) also played Group Commander Ramsey, the Senior British Officer in "The Great Escape" 1963.
Remember watching this as a kid too away back when. Also just found out that the screenplay was by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, two iconic writers who can list many tv series and shows from my childhood on their CV. Tv - Porridge, The Two Ronnies, Lovejoy, Spender, Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Movies - The Commitments, Still Crazy
funny, although quite impossible and predictable, anyway I enjoyed it, and saw some familiar sights since now I am living in Switzerland not too far from Austria
" Its every mans duty to escape" Shows the script writer never served in the army. Its the duty of every commissioned officer to escape, not enlisted men.
Since Brooks is British and the office is British the original poster is right perhaps you should Check before running your mouth off And it only entered the US code of conduct in 1955

So great. Haven't seen this film for over 35 years. So nice to see Oliver Reed in his younger years. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Always loved the feel of these 60s/70s war films with a hippy vide running through them

I remember watching this film as a kid, I remember thinking how much of a great story behind it and the actors fantastic, thanks for sharing it.
Entertainment for kids.... 😂Forget it.
@@martinbrode7131 What's your problem. You troll this guys lovely comment, acting clever? You have issues dude: too much soy, beta ladyboy.
@@martinbrode7131 It's a classic war film, sorry it's not a forgettable marvel one.

Me too..and guess what? No wonder it's so good.. screenplay by the brilliant Dick Clement and Iain Le Frenais

One of my favourite Olly Reed movies 🐘
A very memorable film, Oliver Reed was at his best. The rest of the cast were awesome as well.
Omg it has been decades since I watched this film.. So happy I found it..
What a great film took me back to my childhood 👍👍👍
I appreciate the compassion and mercy the characters Mr Brooks and his Austrian friend show.
Oliver was one of a whole generation of stand alone actors, the name alone could carry the movie.
Oliver was such a perfect actor and an even better drinker.
Yes...what great film with oliver Reed...

Feel good movie with Oliver Reed the legend 😊

Brilliant movie. One of my favourite war movies when I was growing up. 😊
Very likeable film, Ollie's cheeky smile had me onbaord from the outset.
This is a great movie, I remember it when I was young.
THE BRIDGES AT TOKO-RI
Fantastic movie!
One of my favourite movies.

I always wondered what happened to C.W. Moss after Bonnie and Clyde got killed. Seems he joined the army..
Very different war movie. I loved it.
This was very different, and very good.
Great film, cast and story👍
It's kind of outlandish but I'm enjoying it.
John Alderton , Please Sir

Thanks for your unbiased political hatred. Nice movie though.
Lovely story. Thank you.

😅Fun movie .😊
Disney did a film based on a true story, OPERATION DUMBO or something titled like that. Also sweet.
Problem with Disney is, it ends up nothing like the truth.
Disney made Grimm brothers turn in their grave in agony over how he messed up their stories..
My favourite Oliver Reed film.
Made by the Great Michael Winner
Brilliant film 🍿 🎥 🎉🎉🎉
One of the strangest WW2 pics I've ever come across. Leave it to RUclips. 🙃
Whimsical film , but fun .
What happened to the beginning of the film!?!?!?
LOVELY FILM & the air raid at the Zoo brought on a "proper" PTSD and Panic attack/Hysterics AND won't be the first or last!!!!!!!
In Deutsch wäre gut❤😊
🎞 🎬 Brooks loved his elephant Lucy. She saved the survivors and got them to safety in Switzerland 🇨🇭
funny, although quite impossible and predictable, anyway I enjoyed it, and saw some familiar sights since now I am living in Switzerland not too far from Austria

Wasn't that guy with the cricket bat in the Great Escape.
Yeah 👍
Yeah 👍
I like the story about saving an elephant. Just couldn't stomach all the killing.
You might want to avoid movies about World Wars then. And the news. And your local public school. And this planet ;)
When the air raid sirens went off the ducks never moved one inch
sympa ! belle musique !
54:14 A shame they blew up a original 1940-ish Opel Blitz truck for the movie..
They don't care at the time do they
@@Johnnypaycheck77 Destroying classic cars is acrime.
For being a comedy (?) there is quite a lot of killings. Weird to see such a young Oliver Reed.
Lucy is from Ceylon, and alone in Europe, Like myself rn in austria
God bless the elephants like you did on Noahs Ark. Yihaaa for Jesus of Nazareth ❤
Put a sock in it ya' refried jesus wheezer!
Mentioned Iwo Jima, that ended in March ‘45.So this is very late War.
Or even 4 years after the war because they actually mentioned the name of the film "The Sands of Iwo Jima" which was made in 1949!!

@@cbrown9555 Not in the US military whos military code you all keep quoting. Brooks and his friends are British.

Wonderful🦣
54:44 who holds a stem gun like that?
That's an O G, as mentioned below, he used to hang with some BMF's.
A lefty.
Sten gun.
I didn’t look at it as being a training film. I guess I missed the point. I thought it was just a Hollywood movie meant for entertainment my bad.
Well, nothing that funny so far.
What a crap.
I do believe this movie was factual correct or did I imagine reading about it , lol!!
One of my favourite films
Love the music 😊
