Ani makes music transcends. Shes one of the reason i play guitar. The way she sings is like a siren; it's infectious and makes you want to sing with your whole soul. Ain't nothing like blasting her music on the highway heading home and screaming out to the stars.
I admire the art of this woman, her lyrics, all the emotions she puts in her songs...and I don't care what a self proclaimed music expert has to say...
I do love Ani For her reality raw songwriting she tells a story that I can understand and believe. And she puts her soul into it and plays the hell out her guitar. she is the real dealio. rare* gem*
I am entitled to a wide-ranging understanding of musical excellence, and this is a public forum. Just because she helped to create a market, does not exclude her from exploiting it. I meant that her musical talent is SMALL in scope - if you only look for insults then that is all you will find. I can only be accused of despairing at the rapid erosion of our culture. Ani Di Franco is a personality that a certain group of people Identify with - no more, no less.
If you're right, that would make perfect sense. I should let my Lit professor know about this because he's the one who made me aware of the misuse of the word. Thanks.
This is a good song, and from all of the comments I've read, you are all so imature. If you don't like the freaking music, don't leave a comment! If you do like the music, leave an encouraging comment. Anti fans, we banish you. Real fans, we welcome you. Now, all of you get over your little tifs and shut up.
@fonk808 it all depends on which band she has at the particular concert. I have seen her live a few times...and songs that i know so well are different at every show.
James Joyce's scope was one city, But he caused that to encompass literally everything in the world. Academics build entire careers on a single book of his. My comments on DiFranco are not about aesthetics, but about the fact that the cult of personality, often outweighs the significance of that person's work; and, the "cultural elite" are as susceptible to this behavior as are the "Legions of Oprah". I have also wanted to point out that the Ani Difranco fan is a rabid case of this phenomenon.
Re: Alanis doesn't know what Ironic means: This is a very common misinterpretation of the song. She is using the word as an "expression" of sarcasm. Better heard in her line, "a little TOO ironic" . She is suggesting that there's something more than chance to all the annoying things that happen to people in life, as in possibly the interference of a god or something along those lines. Example: "Don't you think it's a little too ironic that he got sick on the one day that he had a test?"
i disagree with your blanket statement. when i was 15 i did not want to be her.(im 30 now, so probably not as old as you if youve been playing for 35 years). i had already been playing guitar for years before i heard Ani but loved her for her WORDS and, myself a guitarist, for some of her unique playing style. but really it was the amount of emotion in her songs that appealed to me. she's an amazing songwriter, as is your Phoebe Snow. as are many other women.
I could be wrong, but I always thought that Alanis' song Ironic was called that because the only irony is that none of the examples in the song are actually Ironic. Take a step back. Think a little less linearly. Is linearly a word? Peace All.
I'm just coming in on the conversation, and don't really know what's going on, but isn't it a little lronic that a song called "ironic" contains no irony?
Alanis doesn't even know what the definition of ironic is. None of those things in her song ironic are ironic, according to Webster. She's a joke compared to Ani.
when you compare this womans' artistry to Chrissy Hynde or Bonnie Raitt or Linda Rondstadt or Sinead O'connor and many other fine, strong women; she seems very limited and small. Her range is narrow, and it seems that she is more of a personality in the Grrrrl niche rather than a major musical talent. And don't tell me that I don't get it, I get it. She's in the music business like every one else, and she has marketed herself as an "Indy" chick and sells a product.
It is futile to argue with fandom. Listen to Phoebe Snow or Joan Armatrading. I have been playing guitar for 35 years - next to Leo Kottke or Jorma Kaukonen, or even acoustic Pete Townsend; this "aggressive percussive style" seems repetitive. Idiosyncrasy is not always a good trait and "Indie" might just as well be "Coca Cola". People don't listen to this woman; they want to BE her. Who wanted to be Thelonius Monk? Every highschool girl wants to be a poet, most stop before doing any damage.
Amazing woman! And she NEVER CAVED to the music industry! True to her word! Concerts are just as good today as they where 10 years ago. I love Ani!

There seems to be an Ani song for every experience in life.
So right
she plays the HELL outta that guitar!
I admire the art of this woman, her lyrics, all the emotions she puts in her songs...and I don't care what a self proclaimed music expert has to say...
Wildly original artist...Saw her in late 2022 in New York (Webster Hall) -- absolutely fantastic show.
Thought she had an accordion, turns out she's just really happy and jumping with the guitar. I love Ani Difranco!!
Ani DiFranco is absolutely stunning! Absolutely stunning!!
And the band is FUNKY every day of the week.
I do love Ani For her reality raw songwriting she tells a story that I can understand and believe. And she puts her soul into it and plays the hell out her guitar. she is the real dealio. rare* gem*

A-mazing.

Playing the same song the same way would get really old real fast.............
Ani is the best!! where is she?!?!?
she is in Minneapolis THIS Saturday and after 18 years i am beyond words excited!!!!
Mmmm...Ani music = fantastically delicious!
She's younger than 36 here. Anyways, she always looks good to me.

@TomboyintheCity You're being generous with one too haha
@fonk808 well please don't show up to any of her shows so I can diminish the chance of having to dance next to you
Hai
Are we talking solo albums or the band with that one album?
Rain on your wedding day is not ironic, just bad. 10000 spoons when all you need is a knife is not ironic, just shit out of luck. You see?
Her music is an acquired taste kind of thing, since it's so different from the mainstream "music".
you gotta get that training bra
That's what I was thinking. But apparently she did that on purpose? Below, Despotic said so. lol
ani is the shiznittlebamsnapple.

Is Ani half Jewish by her mother?

Alanis and Ani are nothing alike.
