As for my issues as a whole, I go to therapy, I take my medications as prescribed, and I actually do the introspection and work to make progress. Obviously seeking treatment is important, but cutting people some slack while they are still struggling is warranted. You don't tell someone with a broken arm to "just do better". @@elijahbuscho7715 So I think you're misinterpreting the intention here. Having a broken arm is fine. But if that person kept slapping you in the face and using "Broken Arm Syndrome" as the excuse to justify exporting their responsibility for it, that's a different conversation, and a problem. I've seen a lot of people use diagnoses labels as blanket excuses, going so far as to hold their friends and romantic partners to a higher degree of responsibility for "living with" their illness than they hold themselves for mitigating it in the first place. That's where the toxicity lies.

Destiny is 100% correct about therapists dropping verdicts on people whom they haven't even met. It's naive to think that people can't or won't cherry-pick the details of what they're sharing.
I am bipolar 1. There is no “cure” for the feelings and impulses that we’re inclined to have. A popular person can do everything possible to maintain awareness and manage their mood and behavior for the entirety of their life and they will always have bipolar moments that they regret. These brief moments where there is a “snap” in judgement and behavior, can often be instantly followed the next moment with a (at least internal) recognition a loss of control happened. These lapses of control happen even when one is earnestly addressing their flaws and well-manages their behavior. There can have lasting and severely negative consequences due to the often exaggerated levels the behavior or word are taken to. I’m thinking particularly about legal and employment consequences. In my experience, normies use the mistakes in behavior of people with mental health challenges as a convenient reason focus all the blame on that person, when it’s rarely the case that a bipolar person wasn’t experiencing some degree of external stress or instigation that prompted a response. Yes, manic outbursts are usually perceived as disproportionate to the situational conditions. But a justification for being upset can just as much be warranted and righteous as exaggerated in the mind. And bipolar behavior is merely a vehicle for one’s personality and everybody has different character traits and cares about different things. I’m often inclined to think people who cite a mental health issue flippantly have very mild symptoms that don’t significantly impact their life. However, there are more people than not in this world, especially regarding people with power or in authority over you, who will be aware someone has a particular mental health difficulty, and when they make a mistake still insist a person bear the full consequences of a mistake or lapse in judgement, as if that person is always be capable of behaving the same way a normie would in that instance. There should be some consideration in judgement and openness to moderating our response to these people who make a mistake in what they say or do. People with mental health issues are just like normies in that we all differ in how much we are willing to identify and acknowledge shortcomings that manifest from mental health challenges, but we can’t hold everyone to the same behavior standards if we know they have challenges. And people can’t always know how much people with mental health challenges are addressing their issues. It’s easier to determine that when you know someone personally, so the best rule is if someone tells you they have this or that mental health issue we need to be charitable and how we judge them until such time they show they are not trying to address their problems in a earnest way. Destiny is right that you have address you’re own flaws and not excuse every mistake you make. But when is anyone eager to admit their mistakes? We have to give people who have mental health challenges, more leeway, and our tolerance for their actions unless they give us a reason not to be charitable towards them.
I agree on web apps and web sites that have their own volume scheme…but that being said…there’s a reason why almost every audio professional uses a Mac and Apple products. Because they have control over the software to hardware integration all in house, they call the shots. My audio interface literally just works. No drivers needed. Having core audio and being able to route all the audio thru one set of outputs for all app audio and then one set for system sounds and alerts is so nice.
Playstation fucked something up and now random people are just super quiet in party chat. Nothing can be done about it from their end and upping the volume barely helps. It is annoying as fuck.
I don’t like using my autism diagnosis as an excuse, but by God does it make people cut me a lot more slack and be a hell of a lot less frustrating with their expectations. Still working on this crap, but understanding definitely helps with that improvement.
The sad part about the non-standard volume issue is that the options we have on desktop haven't translated to mobile, meaning the platform that the vast majority of people use sites like YT on are harmed by this
YES, diagnoses empower you to identify practical reasons for problems and make changes, they do NOT serve as personal excuses that the world must terminally accomodate you.
@thousandth son Except she SAYS "maybe theyre right", or even SAYS "yeah they ARE right", but will never go the next step. Its the same exact thing as peoples apologies. Apologies are worthless when not followed up on.
I heard someone say once that you need different advice depending on how depressed you are. That the shifting the blame is good for a certain stage of depression and taking responsibility is okay once you have enough energy to get past shifting the blame off yourself a little bit. I imagine this is true for other things too point being sometimes take responsibilty is good and sometimes it isn't depends where you are at.
This is a really good point. When you're first learning about/coming to terms with mental illness, it can be helpful to externalize some behaviors as part of the disorder and not yourself. Obviously it's everybody's responsibility to fix their shit but in those beginning stages it's nice to be able to delineate between your "true" self and the self associated with the mental illness and its behaviors
I could see DARVO being used in the future in a similar manner as “gaslighting”-as “nuh uh, I’m right you’re wrong.” But actually engaging with the concept is valuable bc it’s a real thing.
Something that always comes to mind about Destiny and its something I am glad I adapted to is that there are people who THINK they know and there are people who KNOW they know. Destiny, no matter what he talks about KNOWS what he is talking about. Wether he is doing research as the topic expands or not, he makes sure what he says isnt just nonsense because he knows that its gonna backfire. But when you sometimes have debate partners wether its in your own life or here on youtube with him, you can tell from the general conversation or from their own words that they dont actually KNOW anything, they just barely thought about it for 2 moments and immediately jump to "lol dis bad and you dum" which is always a frustrating conversation.
16:30 this idea about separating ailment from the client is less about the separation. And more about being able to let go and process stuff. Which is supplemented by being able to consciously point out what it is that they're trying to let go and process.
I used to pin a lot of my failures on add and while it certainly doesn’t make life easier as an adult I have no excuse to not try and improve my lot in life. Everyone has something that makes life a struggle.
When we “destigmatized” mental illness, we only did so with the ones that you can write in your bio as a quirky trait, which then almost makes it a joke with the amount of people that do externalize all their problems and impute their mental illness.
The only exception I'd give is schizophrenics and other people with paranoid delusions. It's nearly impossible to convince those people they're actually ill and to take their meds. I tried to convince my mom to take her meds for years but she was convinced I was trying to poison her. It's a vicious cycle.
lol I literally had to mute the tab before clicking this video so I could have enough time to turn down the volume on the video so my ears wouldn't burst as soon as he started yelling first second
Therapist here...most therapists utilize reflection and will say things like, "You're feeling verbally abused when (blank) says (blank)." Typically, when a client states the therapist believes this, they are often misrepresenting a reflective statement made by the therapist, if that makes sense.
As a borderline, entirely agree with this. The problem with personality disorders is that THEY ARE YOUR PERSONALITY. And much like any other personality, they can be changed, they can be adjusted, but they require work. I used to be a fucking socially inept rage beast who could only feel anger and not much else. I worked my ass off to be a better person, and people see that and respect me for it.
@@nuancedproductions3548 Research for these disorders has concluded they are however something that can be changed with a lot of work. It's not easy at all but it is possible.
THANK YOU! I try to explain this too people. Yes I get angry and yell at people. Not my intent but sometimes it happens. I apologizy immediately. Because it is MY fault.
I adjust my audio according to music, which I believe is the normal thing to do? The mixer is actually useful where I can lower the music to be close to most RUclips videos. With everything flat Destiny's audio tends to be quieter than others. So if anything, Destiny should be the one to increase his volume and compress it to where it's even with others, or up to music standard loudness so we won't really need mixers, right? (Also, I obviously change volume sometimes (not the mixer) based on priority, like when playing games and listening to a video/music)
Its fine to be self-reflective enough to identify your problems/disorders/etc, and is often a first step to improving yourself, but you need to let it be just the first step - and not just the end conclusion.
I'm so lost with the whole volume thing at this point. My default on windows is 50%, 20% on my sound mixer, and fucking 6% for video games, sometimes 1% and I still have to joink it down in game. i have to put away my headphones when starting a new game because it will give me instant tinnitus and headache. RUclips is also all over the place, sometimes it's super loud at 1 bar, sometimes it's quiet as fuck at max, even when I max out my mixer and the windows slider. I don't recall ever having this issue with television or radio, should I buy some sort of external auto gain controller at this point so the sounds come out at equal volumes?
"I have Borderline. So, now that I have this label, I feel free to act like a shamelessly unadulterated asshole." Sometimes, a labelled disorder is just a description of your behaviours and not just a reason why you do them. They don't free you from the consequences of your actions and most of these disorders do not rob you of the agency you have to change how you relate to people.
As a clinical psychology student, there are some things that are right about what Destiny says. However, there are some people who feel that they have very little room to do something about their mental illness. Things like where they live, their age, whether or not they have a job, and how the people around them treat them make it even more difficult for someone to change their behavior. Also, I understand that Destiny talks about his own experiences, which is very good, but I do disagree with the fact that he compares mental illness as if these are comparable. Some are, some are absolutely not. I hope Destiny reads this.
It costs me a fortune to even attempt to be neurotypical. I’ve lost so much due to being ADHD - it’s actually crazy how taxing it is. I’m homeless too. Everybody treats me like I’m just lazy. I’ve internalized this to the point of hating myself.
When I was diagnosed with bipolar I saw an obstacle to overcome, I changed my diet, I changed my harmful thought processes, I began to exercise and spend more time outdoors, I stopped using so many drugs. Through a series of spiritual experiences I won't get into, I faced the demons of my childhood. I am now still flawed but a better person who is no longer stuck in a constant mania/depression cycle. Other people get diagnosed and just see an excuse for all their personal flaws and an excuse to treat others like shit. I was in a heavilly abusive relationship with someone who justified violence because they had BPD which is just a fucking cop out in my opinion.
Just watching the intro made me feel so good. I think mental illness has become a “get out of jail free card” for a lot of people. They use it to escape any responsibility for their action.
Cause they are fakers, I highly doubt most of these people actually have real disorders and it pisses me off having to deal with the backlash as someone who genuinely has a disorder and never uses as an excuse that it isn’t reasonably for
Destiny mentioned trigger warnings becoming normal to the extreme and I just wanna say every time I see a curse word or even a more mundane word, like a infamous person's name, censored, like f*ck or Tr*mp, I actually pray that Earth gets obliterated by a meteor and has to start over
While I technically agree with your stance, and can apply it broadly to the people you see online, maybe, I think you are underestimating the degree by which someone is controlled by their illness. I've spent over 10 years with many different psychologists and psychiatrists, and while I have a pretty good understanding of the things I need to do to slowly chip away at my massive problems (agoraphobia, extreme anxiety, depression), the hold and control these thoughts have over me, so much so that I believe them irrationally, is so firm that the bad actions I've done a million times over, combatting them is nigh impossible. And the lengths I have to go to rewrite my neural pathways is much more than closing some tabs on a browser.
Yeah he is literally screaming at a bunch of fakers online whilst preaching something that is detrimental to real people with real disorders, people who have actual mental illness don’t fucking parade it online or publicly and they certainly never use it as an excuse for bad behavior. But when people start acting like they can control it completely and they aren’t working hard enough they end up sending us into worse spirals.

Everyone's journey is different, but I will say that the people who use it to gaslight are usually pretty obvious
I would be willing to chat about my experiences with my mental illness and how I've had to adapt and learn to take accountability
“ BPD, or any other police departments” holy fuck, the way I am gasping
As someone with ocd and occasionally crippling anxiety, I agree with everything Destiny said here. Put my ass in therapy to correct the behavior and lead a better life not just for myself but for everyone I care about. Nuff said.
Obviously seeking treatment is important, but cutting people some slack while they are still struggling is warranted. You don't tell someone with a broken arm to "just do better". I have ADHD, and I'm still figuring out how to deal with it (was diagnosed at 24 and medication has not gone well). I don't expect accommodation, but it really helps.
@@elijahbuscho7715 destiny's talking abt the rtrds who have a habit of pointing to their mental condition while also taking no responsibility for their actions. I lived with one of these parasites and they deserve to be slapped
@@Toastergod44 I just think mental illness is used legitimately much more often than would warrant this rant. And it sort of seemed to come out of nowhere.
I think Lav was justified in her comment. I'm not entirely certain of the context, but her sensitivity to the comments is both a legitimate reason to leave the community, and a legitimate reason to ask for accommodation, if either of those were what she was trying to say.
I agree with Destiny that it's best to call out this behavior in the moment, but if this was a moment, then I am confused about what he means.
@@elijahbuscho7715 Do not ever make your mental illness someone elses problem. Or rather, do not ever EXPECT others to make it their problem.
Destiny doing a good job of making eye contact with the camera when making strong points, makes him much more persuasive, good job editor with the full cam as well. Good shit!
Destiny is 100% correct about therapists dropping verdicts on people whom they haven't even met. It's naive to think that people can't or won't cherry-pick the details of what they're sharing.
Glory to Slaanesh!
"You have 15 tabs open ..." Oh, sweet summer child ...
Well i watch a lot of anime and after 1000 hours I realised that I AM THE EXCEPTION, ty Destiny for reminding me
I never catch the livestream and i tuned in and saw this rant. So happy it is a sharable clip.

I am glad that you had subtitles on because my tab was muted and I couldn't figure out why it was so quiet
You watch Destiny because of the drama and politics.
I watch Destiny because of his rants on the volume UI.
We are not the same.
Yo Destiny ur meltdowns are hilarious bro never change 😂
Arkham Asylum arc officially started.
I feel destiny, I lose my shit about little things like the volume too
It’s part of a broader trend in UX tho
Playstation fucked something up and now random people are just super quiet in party chat. Nothing can be done about it from their end and upping the volume barely helps.
It is annoying as fuck.
Probably should go test for IED then
@@FijyFilms okay but that’s cause the developers are trolling us, I swear they have an agenda the amount of games bro that do this
Destiny blaming the person who made the clip when it’s clearly Lav just having Brit super quiet on her stream is hilarious
I’m liking whoever decided to color grade his footage.
That volume control really got you going brutha 😆😭

I heard someone say once that you need different advice depending on how depressed you are. That the shifting the blame is good for a certain stage of depression and taking responsibility is okay once you have enough energy to get past shifting the blame off yourself a little bit. I imagine this is true for other things too point being sometimes take responsibilty is good and sometimes it isn't depends where you are at.
This is a really good point. When you're first learning about/coming to terms with mental illness, it can be helpful to externalize some behaviors as part of the disorder and not yourself. Obviously it's everybody's responsibility to fix their shit but in those beginning stages it's nice to be able to delineate between your "true" self and the self associated with the mental illness and its behaviors
i like how the segment on mental illness started with a sudden tangential rant about tech.
destiny spazzing cuz of volume on websites made my day
Thanks, as someone who was gaslit a lot shit like this is beyond validating, it helps me unlearn all the bullshit that was shoved down my throat

I could see DARVO being used in the future in a similar manner as “gaslighting”-as “nuh uh, I’m right you’re wrong.” But actually engaging with the concept is valuable bc it’s a real thing.
I appreciated this a lot.
Im in the former camp, like destiny for the same reason
As someone who can at times be sound sensitive and was a Psych student in the early 2010's, I felt all of this so hard.
August, the gigachad move would be to leave the title exactly as it is
16:30 this idea about separating ailment from the client is less about the separation. And more about being able to let go and process stuff. Which is supplemented by being able to consciously point out what it is that they're trying to let go and process.
Lmao, Destiny going off over the volume mixer is quite hilarious. So freaking random.
I used to pin a lot of my failures on add and while it certainly doesn’t make life easier as an adult I have no excuse to not try and improve my lot in life. Everyone has something that makes life a struggle.
True ngl. People need to stop making their mental illness their personality and a getaway from their own actions.
When we “destigmatized” mental illness, we only did so with the ones that you can write in your bio as a quirky trait, which then almost makes it a joke with the amount of people that do externalize all their problems and impute their mental illness.
15:28 god tier editing
Will keep coming back to this to get myself to do something
The only exception I'd give is schizophrenics and other people with paranoid delusions. It's nearly impossible to convince those people they're actually ill and to take their meds. I tried to convince my mom to take her meds for years but she was convinced I was trying to poison her. It's a vicious cycle.
Is it just me or is the clip destiny played a little quiet? Why can't he just turn the volume up? He should probably work on that.
As someone who always has Windows locked to 50% and my Audio interface also statically set, I felt Steve's audio rant in my soul.
20 minutes of destiny having a meltdown. It's beautiful.
17:52, my favourite (also not done the vid)
The volume point is so real.
People always look for scapegoats for their mistakes. Mental health issues, blaming the Devil, astrology, MBTI, the list goes on.
lol I literally had to mute the tab before clicking this video so I could have enough time to turn down the volume on the video so my ears wouldn't burst as soon as he started yelling first second
I thought that most reasearch indicated that personality traits are very rigid over a persons lifetime.
@@nuancedproductions3548 I understood that to be more temperament than personality traits, but I could very well be wrong.

I love his trigger warning argument. Completely agree
I need a fucking transcript of this rant holy shit
under video -> three dots -> transcript
So, now that I have this label, I feel free to act like a shamelessly unadulterated asshole."
Sometimes, a labelled disorder is just a description of your behaviours and not just a reason why you do them. They don't free you from the consequences of your actions and most of these disorders do not rob you of the agency you have to change how you relate to people.
"THAT IS YOU"
I want that on merch
That speech gave me "just do it" vibes
As a clinical psychology student, there are some things that are right about what Destiny says. However, there are some people who feel that they have very little room to do something about their mental illness. Things like where they live, their age, whether or not they have a job, and how the people around them treat them make it even more difficult for someone to change their behavior.
Also, I understand that Destiny talks about his own experiences, which is very good, but I do disagree with the fact that he compares mental illness as if these are comparable. Some are, some are absolutely not. I hope Destiny reads this.
I appreciate this take
It costs me a fortune to even attempt to be neurotypical.
Cause they are fakers, I highly doubt most of these people actually have real disorders and it pisses me off having to deal with the backlash as someone who genuinely has a disorder and never uses as an excuse that it isn’t reasonably for
Damn that dgger caught a stray because Steven was already riled up over the volume issue lmfao.
Waiting for the shorts version of this. Everyone needs to hear this shiet.
