  • One of India’s most highly regarded columnists and a former Executive Director of Amnesty International India, has said Narendra Modi is impetuous and reckless and often unconcerned about the consequences of the decisions he takes. In an interview to discuss his recent book ‘Price of the Modi Years’, Aakar Patel cited the background details behind the decision to demonetize in 2016 and to declare a nationwide lockdown at four hour’s notice in 2020 to substantiate his point. In both cases, he argued, the decisions had been taken without consulting his Cabinet colleagues, without seeking advice and without attempting to find out what would be the consequences for the hundreds of millions affected. In the case of the lockdown, Aakar Patel referred to over 200 RTI applications filed by the BBC which substantiate the point he made about the lockdown.

FYI, Burden of proof lies on both the parties.
During Modi tenure more things were made compulsory like Aadhar, PAN Card.
Demonetization, Aadhar linking, Mobile or Digital were public was made busy without any personal benefit.
It only increased expense and profit to digital companies.
Worst Politics, Administration, Casteism, Corruption, Bribery, Scam, Crime is rampant.
Rest I agree 70% of Indian are paying heavy price of Modi years.

If he loses the mouthpiece of amnesty international will be correct. If he fails then the biased media will have its glory day. If he is defeated a person masquerading as king of free media will win. Bottom line is that Mr. Modi sees himself as a hero and managed to project himself as one also.....he neither has the intellectual and emotional instrument set nor does he have the qualities of a true leader. He is just vacant upstairs....😂 Just like they say never judge the product by the box😂😂. "Narendra modi" is the worst thing happened to india after independence...Yes probably worse than "Indira Gandhi".

A very good interview Mr. Thapar. Mr. Patel's courage and understanding are commendable. I hope and pray India and Indians to have a better sense of their country's direction. The way it looks, it does not look good. Mr. Modi and his hard-line policies have not only eroded secularism in Inda rather ruined India's potential to be a developed country. It makes me wonder, how on earth a democratically elected government can do that kind of harm to the foundation and fabric f a country in just under eight years? And sadly, there is no hope for a change of guards in Delhi in the foreseeable future, since there is a vacuum in India's political scenario. Congress party has lost its shine in the past eight years under Modi's systematic cleansing. Indian people are very hardworking and decent, it was time for them to enjoy the sacrifices of their labour in terms of prosperity, peace and stability. Unfortunately, Mr. Modi's absolute majority has damaged the Indian society and jeopardized its economic potential as a country to a very difficult recovery stage for any government in the foreseeable future. Only miracles can change it, the tricky part is, they don't happen if the leadership lacks wisdom and the policymakers and implementers lack the courage to say and do what is in the best interests of a country and its citizens. I wish the best of luck, prosperity and peace to the Indian people. It's not about India's success it's about that region, its citizens and the global village we all are part of.

Reckless, impetuous & uncaring: haven't we known this seven years?
But you can't blame him for that: would you blame a toddler for smearing his face with milk and throwing stuff across the living room crying out when another toddler takes away his toy?
Thus the continual blaming of _someone else_ and the instinctive yearning for attention ...

The author made a cold analysis of the last seven years of majoritarian identity politics of the "most charismatic" leadership in India -- the biggest of the sub-continental countries. It has revealed frightening developments in communal and economic fronts and, a dismal prospect of coming out of it in years to come. The consequences would not remain confined inside the country but would affect its neighbours.
One can not help but is reminded of a past era of majoritarian identity politics of the "most charismatic" leadership in another country, in another continent, preceding WWII. Thanks to both of you for the interview.

Aakar is being polite by being slightly charitable in his choice of phrases for describing Modi. The fact of the matter is that never in India have we had a man so crass and third rate as to willingly and deliberately destroy the institutions so painstakingly set up by Nehru and the stalwarts that came later. He is a curse and a blot on governance and administration in India.

What Aakar Patel will not say or Karan Thapar will not point out is that labour force participation has been consistently declining in India since year 1995 and the most significant and sharp decline was witnessed during the period 2005-2010 when the Indian economy was supposedly booming and this data source is also World Bank which Mr Patel refers to - it is because critics peddle half truths that Narendra Modi continues to be popular and then they appear to wonder why?
