This is the very house of the Alice Burge Murder took place in 1920
In 1920, Andrew Burge was just another war veteran recently returned to his native land. The son of German immigrants who had made their home in Dallas, Andrew had dropped out of high school to join the army as an enlisted man. Starting as a machine gunner, Andrew was promoted all the way to first lieutenant. The former choirboy at Dallas’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church had seen combat in France during World War I. By most accounts, he was an excellent officer and a good soldier.
New Year’s Day of that year was also the last time anybody saw Alice Burge, the owner of a Dallas lodging house, alive. On May 12, 1920, her decomposing body was found by The Texas Rangers in the cellar of the lodging house, when they were led to the cellar by the maid.
Police investigators immediately zeroed in on Andrew Burge, the husband of Alice. Alice, whose real surname was Aliincina Morphoe, had argued with Andrew on that fateful New Year’s Day before Apparently enraged that Alice had given someone else a present on Christmas instead of him, Arnold had stabbed her several times before burying her body in the basement.
After discovering her body, her maid also noticed that Alice’s room had been ransacked. A close search determined that a fur coat and several valuable jewels were missing. Investigators initially believed that Andrew may have committed suicide because chloroform was a party drug in the 1920s. But an autopsy proved without a doubt that she had been stabbed.
On July 14, 1923, Arnold died in the electric chair.
