      but there is an option for 1800x for coming with or without stock coolers.

      Aye :) but in the video he suggested stock cooler was being used to throttle the intel chips. that was all, minor point in an otherwise great video :) they don't ship them for the high end 6700k or 7700k either iirc

      Manny Santiago CPU Jesus, LOL. It's true though. Jim has the ability to think outside of the standard microarchitecture box. It was true with the Athalon CPUs, it was true with the Apple A8 chips and it's true now with Ryzen. He just keeps hitting homeruns.

    • @CrackedDylMil
      @CrackedDylMil 8 лет назад

      Well Ryzen is pretty much just Broadwell-E but alot cheaper. There's a pretty good chance that AMD looked at Intel patents, copied Broadwell-E, and then started improving it where they could. Saves them alot of money, and it's a healthy practice

    • @Nakano2k1
      @Nakano2k1 8 лет назад +23

      CrackedDylMil I'm sorry, but ryzen and broadwell-e architectures are in no way the same. the method in which cores talk to each other is different, the smt implementation is different and the memory controller is different as well. if you take a look at pictures of the dies as well as supplemental architectural information, you'll see what I mean. is the IPC performance very similar? yes. do they both have the same amount of cores and threads? yes. that's pretty much where the similarities end.

    • @hafeezhamama9580

      Nakano2k1 having read Steve Jobs' biography, one thing he said really stood out to me: it's not about how much money you spend in R&D, it's about how and where you're spending it, and who you're hiring to do the job.

      I think they are releasing r3 and r5 later because they simply don't have produced enough of them yet. r3s and r5s will be cheaper and will sell really fast. faster that they can produce lol. Its the same thing always. remember the gtx 10 series. 1080 1070 went first and they still struggled to keep up with the demand. imagine if they released the 1060 at the same time lol.

      Let's be real, the real reason it took Nvidia so long to release the 1060 and 1050 is because they were milking the market as hard as they could. Notice how as soon as AMD releases the RX 400 series then AMD responds with the budget end of the GTX10 series?

    Even if intel drops prices a lot, i hope comsuers will still choose Amd over a firm which screwed the comsurmers over years. İ won't forget how intel screwed me with my i7 4790k and i wish the same for Vega against NV.

      Judas101010 I know they screwed people in terms of cost, were you happy with the CPU other than that or did it have other problems? My I7 5820K has random freezes with the C6 state enabled and it took a lot of time in terms of troubleshooting for me to find out what the cause was. Needless to say I'm not very happy.

    Bye bye intel, you chose to charge me an extra 50% when AMD was irrelevant because you could. If you want my money ever again you will no longer have to be competitive, you'll have to drop your prices low enough for me to make my 50% back. That is 250 for your flagship. Why? Because I can.

    There is one fact that no-one has caught on to here....AMD are about to do to the CPU market with Ryzen what they are doing to the GPU market with Freesync.... They are making Multicore processors affordable across all price ranges. This will boost the numbers of users with more than 4 cores across the board....Thus Game Developers will start programming more games for multiple core scalability.....This is the Long Game and AMD are playing it well on both CPU and GPU fronts.....Roll on Vega :-)

    I'm so exited for Ryzen cpus. One note though, I think you made an oversight when it comes to elite sniper test. It's clear that AMD used skybox as an advantage for fps gain (look hot they move crosshair up so more less demanding scene is rendered). Just a constructive criticism :) LOVE your videos, can't wait for more!

    • @NikolaPlivelic
      @NikolaPlivelic 8 лет назад +1

      That depends on cpus that are being compared. I expect 1700x and 1800x to perform as well as 6900k and 6800k in single-threaded (ST) stuff but to have around 18% weaker ST performance of 7700k . R5 1600x should be better than older brothers in ST performance. And then there is a R5 1400x 4 core 8 thread part that has less cores and higher clock. I think this part will have the best of ST performance that AMD has to offer this gen - which will still be lower than Intel's parts by around 10% but, that doesn't faze me TBH, that kind of performance loss is only noticeable at high fps/lower resolution.
      Edited: Single-threaded performance from 25% to 18% (did the math based on amd's CbR15 results and GamersNexus 7700k)

    • @yancgc5098
      @yancgc5098 8 лет назад +2

      Nikola Plivelic That 25% less single core performance than Kaby Lake is bullshit. The Ryzen CPUs have the same IPC performance as the Kaby Lake CPUs if they are both at the same clock speed. AMD literally reached Skylake levels of IPC with their 52% increase in instructions per clock over the Excavator architecture, and Skylake IPC is the same as Kaby Lake IPC, so you are really downplaying Ryzen for no good valid reason.

    • @rinhato8453
      @rinhato8453 8 лет назад

      Nikola Plivelic Kaby Lake IPC isn't much more than Broadwell-E, about 10% AFAIK. R7 1700 would be probably 10-15% behind the 7700k but twice as many cores and threads is a good sell.

    • @NikolaPlivelic
      @NikolaPlivelic 8 лет назад

      Yanteus Maximus Rin Hato IPC - Instructions Per CLOCK is not the same thing as Single-Threaded performance. ST performance depends on BOTH clock of the chip and IPC (which is gained by uArch design). You can look at it like this, let's set IPC in an equation as a multiplier. Not sure how accurate or not this will be, but I'm giving an example IPC*clock = imaginary ST performance If we imagine IPC as a multiplier and set 7700k's as "1" that would mean 1*4500MHz (4,5GHz is taken into account because that's the highest stock Single Core frequancy, and we are comparing ST perf.) Now, I believe that AMD is close to Broadwell-E IPC, we know that from the CinebenchR15 ST test where 1800x matched 6900k ST perf. But! 1800x was clocked 4GHz and 6900k 3.7GHz, meaning Broadwell-E has slightly better IPC. If BW-E has IPC 10% lower than Kaby Lake as Rino Hato stated, that means it's ipc multiplier would be 0.9, and rizens around 0.86 . Sorry for the long post

    • @rinhato8453
      @rinhato8453 8 лет назад +1

      Nikola Plivelic I think the 6900k was running at 4Ghz too, as shown on the slide detailing system specs, so Ryzen seems to have near enough the same IPC as Broadwell-E. It won't be too far behind Kaby Lake in gaming, and as you've said the R5 4 core skew will most likely have higher clocks to make up for it. Personally I'd rather have more cores so I'd choose the 1700 over the 7700k, the 6 core skew may be a good compromise though.

    I also saw in another video that all Ryzen CPUs are going to have unlocked multipliers on them, or otherwise overclockable. I'm mostly interested to see how far above their spec they can be pushed to see if the 1700 can compete with the 7700k in gaming. Great video as always, I usually take other reviewers' videos with a grain of salt until I see what you have to say about it. Most people missed the slides at the end showing the system builds, stock Intel coolers, etc. Nice catch there.

      Don't worry, there are entry-level $69 B350 motherboards and you can overclock the $139 Ryzen 3. Unlike Intel, who charges a premium for unlocked K variants and expensive Z-series motherboards if you want to overclock. If this were Intel, you'd pay $259 for an i5-7600K and another $119 for an entry-level Z270 motherboard. The i5-7600K might be the faster quad core processor, but not by a whole lot that justifies paying twice the price.

  • @Ramb1t0
    @Ramb1t0 8 лет назад

    The turbo boost feature of the R7 1800x gimps game performance in my experience. Cores constantly throttle to maintain tdp and lower power consumption. Its almost like the variance in core speed causes hang ups in some game engines. The cores jump all over the place in clock speed especially when under a multi core load. When turbo boost is disable and cores are run all at a fixed speed like 3.9ghz it performs like a beast on par with a 6800k in games and in some games beats a the 7700k. Ryzen loves stable voltage for games. Turn off all power saving features and boost. Just open hardware monitor in multi threaded games and watch those core dance down clocking and up clocking to save power and maintain tdp. You mentioned that the 1700 will be the hard sell. To me it seems quite likely that it will become the one to purchase and overclock. 1700 @ +4GHz would perform identically to, if not better than the 1800x.

      Graeme I would think if it could OC that high they would use it for a 1700x...If I were AMD I would cherry pick/sort the best CPUs to go out first to keep the hype train going. Then later normalize it to luck-of-the-draw and do the same for R5 & R3.

    Ordered the last parts for my new system to be built aroudn the 1800X today. Many shipping dates are still in a bit of flux, but unfortunately it seems that motherboard and cooler makers (the ones I'm going for) will not quite make it for the CPU launch and delay my build with 7-10 days. Slightly annoying, but it's not like I'd get whatever motherboard comes out first anyhow. I could have had some fun with AMD's stock cooler for a few days, but now the 1800X comes without any cooler at launch.

    Great video bud and love the title! Seen another couple of channels rushing to repeat quite literally the AMD vid release so was waiting with anticipation for your view and more in depth analysis. I'm actually genuinely excited by what I've seen so far but will reserve judgement for the independent benches which is less than a week away. If the benches prove positive then it's just a case of which CPU to choose. Have to say though this had me grinning like a right loon, been a long long time in the making :)

      Looking at the choice here from the lineup I suspect the smart money is on the 1700X.....but the price of the 1800X makes it so tempting. I'll be patient though and await the real world indie benches (that's your benches and analysis btw) simply down to the chips being unlocked. The 1700X could be an absolute beast with some smart overclocking. Intel must be having a cow over this, complacency will get you nowhere!

      Benchmarks gonna be tough for me as I just lack the hardware - not for the want of trying this month. Contacted everybody I could but have simply been unable to get very far until recently when MSI seems to have bought-in to me. Most things look good and I think it will be a winner. Though I'd like to throw in some caution about Cinebench, it very much relies on high FPU performance. Integer IPC is still not really revealed by the benchmarks that AMD chose and this is what matters a fair bit in the few (thankfully) games who relies on high single thread performance.

    I think the reason the Ryzen cpu's seems to be performing better in these benchmarks is that the architecture automatically OC's itself to whatever it can with the cooling solution provided to it. where as the Intel 6900K does appear to be throttled somewhat. This is especially evident in the cinebench R15 test where the 6900k scored 1474 . I'm able to achieve a score of 1800 with my old 5960X running at 4.5 GHz, so I think what we're seeing here is essentially an overclocked 1800X vs a stock 6900K. Its hard to know exactly whats going on without more info on the cooling solutions and true clockspeeds for these tests. It'll definitely be very interesting to see what the top clock speed of these Ryzen CPU's will be able to be with a high end water cooling solution, I hope it can achieve more than 4.1. All that being said though, thank god AMD have delivered something to truly rival Intel and priced it extremely well. Let the competition begin :)

    What do you mean by "numbers all over the place" in 6:00? I don't think the stock 2011 cooler will make the 6900K throttle (BXTS13A is not the same cooler found in 115x), nor do I think the numbers are not outside the margins of error. But nevertheless I think you're spot on on saying that the Broadwell IPC hype is real.

    Competition is more of a gamble for AMD, specially against the ubiquitous 7700K. Some will remain with intel and others might try Ryzen out. All I'm hoping is for AMD to recover a good 10% of this market, preferably 20% but that's a bold expectation that assumes the best case scenario (recall the 480 controversy.)
    A major concern for AMD at this point is consumers who consider switching would have to buy a new motherboard/CPU just to try out a company that has had a sub par history (taking things from their perspective). If AMD keeps up a good fight to the next generation of products, there will be more room left for growth as today's consumers' hardware depreciates enough to merit an upgrade and notice the performance per dollar favor AMD (their main selling point.)
    If AMD lands a good deal in the server industry, then their work will be highly rewarded (which, as you mentioned, intel basically owns this corporate market)
    I hope this launch goes well for them and that there are no issues for Ryzen (nothing major at least.) Once again, thanks for remaining neutral to the source and analyzing carefully what's given. Would really like to see your channel grow a bit more to where making your own benchmarks isn't a "maybe". Hopefully you already got a sample ;)

It's just hard to believe that you will be able to OC a 65W 8c/16t CPU unless there is just a software/BIOS power limit, instead of some hardware lock/limit. Would you be able to casually up the multiplier up on 1700 at the price of temperature and power draw? Or you'll just hit a casual BSOD as soon as you up the multiplier by 1x? :) (hope i make sense hah)

    They have to get their Ryzen 5 line out fairly soon in my opinion. It's great that their CPUs are topping the charts in the Ryzen 7/i7 bracket but a large chunk of the market is still in the 200-250 price bracket for CPUs(Plus 100-150 for the mobo and at least 100 for RAM). The biggest investment you make is your motherboard, it's the biggest pain in the ass to replace while you can easily switch out a CPU just as long as the socket is still relevant. A lot of people might simply buy a placeholder CPU they can put in the latest socket to upgrade further down the line to an i7/Ryzen 7, I know that's what I did with my i5-6600k knowing I could upgrade to Kabby and still get really good performance out of the 6600k.
    They could potentially shoot themselves in the foot here if they don't have their Ryzen 5 with prices around €200 coming out sooner rather than later. It's not just the fact that some would buy cheaper now to upgrade in a few months time but the simple fact that a lot of people out there don't want to spend that kind of money on a CPU even if it is much faster. Full in on a CPU pretty much includes the price of the motherboard, RAM and cooler(A lot don't go with stock cooling).
    The good about having such good high end CPUs out first is the fact people know exactly what to aim for but if they have no alternatives to the i5 out the gate it could present issues. On top of this not having Ryzen 5(200-300 price range I would guess) it gives Intel a lot of time to come out with something a lot more attractive in the meantime. I simply can't believe Intel have been doing nothing but sitting with their thumbs up their ass all this time while Ryzen was being trumped these last few months(Actually starting a whole year ago). They could just as easily announce price drops and an X version of existing CPUs to tip over Ryzen.

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  8 лет назад

      Not really, outside of some extreme edge cases ie triple 4K SLI, GPUs are basically the same running at 8x vs 16x. I'd rather save $550 on the CPU, which may actually end up slightly faster in the majority of cases.

    • @fearmemortals
      @fearmemortals 8 лет назад

      There is a lot more going on these days that want to use PCI-E lanes than just the graphics card though. Something else that is also a bit of a concern is that the consumer grade chipset only has 6 PCI-E lanes for the graphics card on a PCI-E 2.0 slot.

    I noticed Lisa doesn't address the poor memory performance issues you mentioned and shown in your graphs last time....These Cpu's are impressive but there is no way I'll buy into it until they show us they have sorted out the memory.

    Regarding that Sniper Elite benchmark:
    "AMD CPU (right) regularly contained large swathes of skybox (during ammo reloads, for example) while the Intel CPU demo happened to focus more on other nearby geometry while eliminating much of the sky" - thats not my words, but people running www.gamersnexus.net
    Any thoughts on that?

    The fps differences in Sniper Elite 4 are in some cases caused by more skybox.

    hey man i have a really important question if those 3 cpus are identical and the only difference is the core clock, cant i overclock the cheapest 8 c16t cpu to 4 ghz and it would be the same as their higher end offering?

    The next question is how well do they overclock ? There all unlocked chips.

    I wonder how high the 1700 will OC, the clock isn't that much lower than the 1700X given the 30% lower TDP. They could be fairly well binned chips.

      Apparently OCUK have had the 1700 up to 4GHZ already and that was without much effort.

    Do you see new tools to management AMD CPU, it looks like you can change frequency per 2 cores (4 sliders), so boost be 1 core, or maybe more advance?

    What's your take on the Ryzen 5 and 3. According to the leaks the Ryzen 5 1400X (flagship quad core) is clocked at 3.5/3.9GHz and seems pretty weak in comparison to the i7 7700K which is clocked at 4.2/4.5GHz. However the AMD processor is rumoured to be priced much lower, but still I would expect higher clock speeds just like intel's quad cores are much higher clocked then their octa core processors.
    So it seems that at quad core and lower AMD can't compete core per core performance wise. If the leaks are true that is.

      Yeah it won't beat Kaby Lake but if it's half the price then the 7700K will be unbuyable. ;)

      Yeah, but we are sure to see price cuts. And if it is by a fair amount it looks like for the near future it will still be a better "gaming" CPU.

    Another very nice surprise is that I can preorder the Ryzen 1700x here in Australia for only $569, which unlike the RX 480 and RX470 graphics cards which carried an outrageous Australia Tax up to 40% over conversion +GST, puts it in line with currency conversion rates plus 10% GST.
    There's no fucking Australia tax on these parts, good one AMD.
