  • Director Sean Baker and actors Brooklynn Kimberly Prince, Bria Vinaite, Valeria Cotto and Willem Dafoe spoke to Anna Smith about the making of their film at the BFI London Film Festival Gala screening of The Florida Project.
Six-year-old Moonee (the astonishingly good Brooklynn Kimberly Prince) lives with her mother and other castaways from the American dream in a candy-floss-coloured roadside motel in Orlando. Disney World is just up the road, but their budget dayglow home is no plush hotel resort. Halley, Moonee’s mother, is only just an adult herself. More of an incorrigible older sister than a parent, she gets a kick out of juvenile hijinks, with utter disregard for their consequences.
Director: Sean Baker | Producers: Sean Baker, Chris Bergoch, Shih-Ching Tsou, Andrew Duncan, Alex Saks, Kevin Chinoy, Francesca Silvestri
    Screenwriters: Sean Baker, Chris Bergoch
With Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Kimberly Prince, Bria Vinaite, Valeria Cotto, Christopher Rivera, Caleb Landry Jones

If this movie doesn’t win an Oscar or more Hollywood is stupid, It’s a refreshingly directed, produced and acted movie and script. It totally sparkles despite its grim reality. Well done and full of heart.

And as we see the Oscar goes to the lady that sleeps with fishes, well played Hollywood.

Lovely energy from the director Sean Baker and actors Brooklynn Kimberly Prince, Bria Vinaite, Valeria Cotto and Willem Dafoe. And Willem Dafoe really shines for being so humble despite being a seasoned & world famous actor.
I am looking forward to attending a premier screening of this film, here in London - and knowing that I am going to thoroughly enjoying watching this film, I hope Sean Baker and everyone else involved in the subsequent work they do to help other people, brings about great change! I also hope to see Sean Baker work with these actors again.

I saw this movie in the cinema last November 2017 and I totally agree with everything you said about this movie. Before watching this movie I knew absolutely nothing about it other than William Defeo was in it. Bearing n mind this movie was made on a budget of $2million, I was completely blown away by this movie and thought that is was just astonishing. I had to have the ending explained to me and why it ended that way but once I realized why it ended that way, I just totally understood. Bearing in mind it was last November I saw this movie at the cinema, I honest to God genuinely thought this movie was gonna do exceptionally well at The Oscars and I was horrified it went ignored. More often than not, each year the Oscars get behind an underdog movie and I thought The Florida Project was gonna be the 2018 Oscars underdog. I honest to God genuinely thought Bria Vinate was gonna get overall Best Actress nevermind just being nominated, I mean for me at least, her performance was just so method she was just too good for comfort, she wasn`t acting in the movie - she was genuinely this white trailer trash character, a terrible mum but loved her daughter so much and the chemistry between her and Brookline Prince was just .....unbelievable amazing. And speaking of Brooklyn Prince ....no best supporting Oscar nod - Disgraceful! I also honestly thought this movie would do well in the Best Original Screenplay category but again, totally ignored. Can someone please explain to me why the helicopter landing in the backyard on a daily basis was all about?

Rich people get helicopters to DisneyWorld. That's why Hayley was mad at them.

      @@mineaguscraft Thanks.
      I had this question too.
Anyway I loved the movie, I got to watch it a few days ago and was blown by it. I've also made an irritating habit(I guess) of forcing people I love watch movies I loved, which according to me is my way showing my love and care for them.
My sis loved it, and I'm going to suggest this movie to more and more people until I stumble across another piece of art.
There was some hype about Oscars when it came but 'Shape of water', 'Get out', & "Three Billboard outside' sounded it out due to big name actors, good content and our fascination and lack thereof good 'Crime-Drama' movies in case of 'Get out' and Oscar nomination in original screenplay.
Well it had a great story 'off movie', an Instagrammer getting a movie role, a kid being the biggest screen time in a Drama film and ironically, Willem, having as insignificant role as there could be, screen time wise although not respect to relevance was the star attraction for most of us.

On hwy 192 in Kissimmee there is a Helicopter Ride Attraction right next to the Motel the Movie was filmed in. They charge $15 per person for a 30 minute ride.

Disneyland in California has the same type of situation with prostitution and the poor living in motels surrounding the park.

“There’s an issue right now with families living in budget hotels” the poor have been living in budget/rat trap hotel, ever since there were budget motels. I’m kind of shocked and disgusted how disconnected these Hollywood types are of American poverty.
    Other than that....amazing film....very impressive
