    My dad was a boxer in the 20s in NYC, and he taught me how to punch. As it happened I never had to use the skill seriously but he taught how to punch very much like you do, getting the body behind it and turning the the hand at the end with a snap. I passed it on to both my sons and could feel when the got it- they started to hurt my hand! They both went to rough schools and quickly developed a reputation for being able to punch effectively. A skill well worth developing.

    I am 54. I am 9.5 stone and started going to the gym with a personal trainer to get myself fit. I was doing it for about four months and it gave me lots of confidence. I was walking home feeling pumped as you do, when I passed a group of lads who for some reason took a disliking to me. I got nervous and continued to walk. Yeah, I was punched in the back of the head, no reason. Anyway, I heard someone shouting and this guy must be say 60-65 came running over and Jesus, he was throwing punches from everywhere. I am not going to say I did anything heroic haha I didn't get the chance. The point is you are never too old. Life is also sadly more dangerous as people don't need a reason anymore. It did shake me for a while, yet it also pushed me to train harder. Thanks.

      @Oscarspoem, no you're never too old but it should be absolutely the last resort - when you're cornered. These days, with so many thugs carrying knives, it's way better to stay passive, avoid eye contact, ignore any insults etc. It's not worth risking your life.

      Ya 8 months old I know.
      There was a trainer from Philadelphia who trained some pros, and was attempted to be carjacked by a couple of young guys. The victim was in his late 70's or early 80's. Anyway he beat the living hell out of them both until one shot him dead..they were caught bc one had to go to hospital from injuries from that old boxer. They actually were so afraid they had to shoot him.
      That tells you the power of the sweet science
      You can Google it was in the news. Even though he died that day, he died a man on his feet handling his business. Those who shot him have to live with the reflections of cowards who let an old man best them. Chin down hands up for life

      Had an old pro boxer from the 70's in jail when I was in there and he taught us a few tricks and the guy in the video explains EXACTLY like my dude did... u definitely want to practice with your non dominant arm, pretend your carrying books under both your elbows and talking on the phone with your dominant hand, then picture a target on the and jab at it... I first started doing that and looked sloppy as hell! My left arm was all over the place! Like barney fife trying to shoot the side of a barn lol and I had the entire dorm laughing at me, dude told me "don't worry about them, you don't see them getting up here and doing any of this... laugh at them because they're scared to do what your doing", but the more I practiced my jabs they got better, and other inmates started coming up like "man! Those jabs are looking good!" And every night for weeks it was just jabbing and stepping with my left arm, few weeks later I was throwing at his hands and he says "give me a power punch with your dominant arm" and of course that arm was always natural, so when I swung it he says "DAMN! That's a straight knockout or at least a hell of a bell ringer!" Old dude died a few ago and I still miss that old dude, even though it was just a few months in jail, he made an impact! And it hurt when I heard he passed! So I subscribed to this guy because I know for a 100 percent fact he knows what he's talking about!

    The other essential tip that a lot of people take months or years to learn is to keep your punching arm relaxed and only tense it on impact. If you tense it on the way out it slows, loses power and tires you out.

    Just started training without gloves, so still experimenting, but it changed my punches from horizontal to vertical. Either straight (jab and cross), or fully rotated (cross and overhand). Seems much easier to have a consistent two knuckle impact. Open hand might be even better.
    Also trying to switch towards a Muay Thai style use of elbows and knees in the shortest range, being consistent with two knuckles in tight hooks takes too much wrist twisting.

    • @dayman161172

      Im from a Traditional martial art background now doing wrestling and boxing.
      It depends on body structure and Repetition. I started with a vertical fist but after having a certain punching power you have to have a horizontal punch to prevent elbow for overextending.
      Also if you rotate wrong you will block your shoulder and be stiff. The trick is to rotate from the back muscles by pushing them out

      Maybe, I am by no means an expert, also just recreational and not a fighter. But then again at HW probably don't lack power in most situations, specially considering this video is focused on street fights with no weight classes, so a lot of difference is outside what training can provide.
      Anyway, the problem I find with no gloves is mostly with hands. If a punching style can alleviate pressure on hands and create a limited issue somewhere else it might still be a reasonable bargain.
      I can't really punch full force with bare hands (no bandage either) anyway even on the bag, let alone a hard surface. Actually, in a real fight I would strongly consider open hands even, as well as elbows. Even with the best close-fist technique getting a dynamic moving target wrong is still very possible.
      In any case I have started horisontal, moved to vertical, damaged fists a lot bare handed, even without a single missed punch and everything on the two knuckles, elbows though are still OK :duno:
      Though you might have better conditioned hands if from a traditional background, so that too is a possible factor.

      @goranmekota7540 2 года назад +1

      @@Tony_Jeffries Good video. I was though the "tighten late" approach, but this makes sense.
      But again, it is in a boxing scenario - not sure how much of it transfers directly in a no-glove no-rules one? Not having gloves possibly also changes defense a lot and you might engage hands for pairing more, I guess? Don't know. Also, hitting with open hands is in itself an option to consider with unprotected hands. All speculative however, not in habit of punching anything outside the gym :D

    • @dayman161172
      @dayman161172 2 года назад +4

      @@goranmekota7540 yes you are right. I mentioned traditional martial art to emphasis that i know the difference between a ring and streets. I would also never use fists for the head. I use the fists for the torso. Open hands are better for the head part right.
      I worked a long time to get punching power with my box training.
      If you can do that then palm punches are almost the same.
      In my opinion the best punch is simplest and the most powerful with the least telegraphing.
      Thats what my training is or was the past years

What is your take on this? By the way, the wife and I are huge fans of your channel. Keep the content coming one love.

    1:00 this isnt entirely true if youre fighting someone that will be kicking you in the leg, the boxing side stance does make you a smaller target, but if they kick you in the legs theyre gonna knock you off balance very easily.

    What do you think about fighters like Lomachenko who fights southpaw but is right handed? This was also Bruce Lee's method, he was right handed and used a southpaw stance. I see the logic behind having your dominant hand for your cross if you want pure knock out power, I also see the logic to having your dominant hand as your lead hand because it's faster and stronger for throwing lead hooks uppercuts, and jabs. If you can throw really good lead shots that are 80-90% as strong as cross shots, then it makes your opponent worry about that lead side. Often times, in sparring, when I know my opponent doesn't have a strong jab I'll eat one on purpose so I can return with a hook. Because I know it's slow and weak I can just roll with it easily and won't do anything, or I can slip to the right and counter with a left cross.

    I'd like to add that if it is a singular punch with the dominant hand, as in you don't intend to throw another, then it helps to sort of lunge with it by tucking your non dominant leg in and extending the dominant one
