Hi, Mark. You may remember me commenting to you last year after your vlog on propagating pineapples. I am the guy with terminal cancer who contacted you to thank you for all of the joy I have received from your wonderful work. Much to my surprise, I am still alive and have outlived my oncologist's predictions. It appears God had other plans for me. I am still terminal (as far as I know), but I'm feeling exceptionally well. I received an amazing amount of well wishes from your followers from all over the world. I also received a beautiful letter from you, all of which I appreciate so much.
Not only am I still alive, but I have recently gotten a second wind, so to speak, and am using what little strength I have to build a modest raised bed garden to accompany the tiny one I have left over from last year.
This year's raised bed is exactly what you showed in today's video using leftover lumber. I actually mustered the strength and energy to build it myself this week. I'm mostly proud that I was capable after all I've been through. Like the one in your video, my carpentry skills were not perfect, but it is just fine for what it is. It was fun for me to see you doing exactly the same project I just did right at the same time.
In your last text to me you said that maybe one day you and I will garden side by side in the afterlife (I'm paraphrasing. You said it much more eloquently). In a way, it looks like we already are. How cool is that!
Keep being the awesome guy that you are, Mark.

Love the mention of people with disability. My wife and I are blind and Sam has a bad knee etc and building a solid high bed from mostly repurposed hardwood was such a good choice for us. We put a ledge around the top and sanded it so no splinters and we can sit or lean on the bed and put our tools and watering can on too. The height, building on a couple of layers of cardboard and finishing with good soil pretty much gave 0 weeds to deal with and in 3 months only 1 or 2 snails. Gardening can be challenging with disability, chronic illness and neuro diversity to the extent that we started a permaculture Facebook group to discuss and try to find solutions. Happy growing all.

I have big dogs. I have a garden outside my yard but I also wanted to utilize the room inside my yard as well so instead of doing what you did I happened to see an old frigerator on the side of the road. I completely removed all the lines and wires and even the middle between the freezer to the fridge and filled it up with dirt and turned it into my green beans and carrots. I liked the idea so well that I got another one filled with corn

Old lumber or from construction site dumpsters. Corrugated metal, cinder blocks, bricks, kiddie pools, containers, 5 gallon buckets etc... etc... etc... you are only limited by your imagination.

I sure do enjoy your videos...ideas...your FUN PERSONALITY...About 4 years ago, WE built one ALMOST like that...we stapled thick plastic all around the insides, going up from the bottom, so the water wouldn't seep through, and will stay inside the bed. IT IS 4' X 8' ... WE PUT LOGS, ROCKS, LEAVES, COMPOST, etc at the bottom half of the bed...AND the top, around 1 to 2 feet with the GOOD SOIL... each year (because the soil sinks each year) it needs to be added to, to get the level back up to the inch from the top, but it's been worth it, and it's SINKING LESS EACH YEAR ... It's done GREAT for most plants that dont need super DEEP ROOTING...AND we've NEVER HAD TO WORRY ABOUT wood PUSHING OUT...The boards are screwed in...IT COST QUITE A BIT...with lumber costs rising...Ours is also 4 ft high...and we left the four posts (just at each corner) about a foot above, so we can staple plastic over the top, for our COOLER CANADIAN SPRINGS, letting the young plants not freeze...Our 4 POSTS ARE 4" X 4" UNTREATED POSTS...AND WE USED 4" X 1" X 8' BOARDS...It cost us , with the bags of soil added, around $500/CAN. But, with it being our only BIG RAISED BED, it was worth it! But, NICE to be able to FIND CHEAPER WOOD NOWDAYS, AS PRICES ARE RISING HIGHER, AFTER COVID! GOOD'AY MATEY 😃 from So. Thank you Mark. I live in California about two hours away from (Epic) I appreciate you doing this because not everybody can afford those beautiful galvanized beds. I have a 4 x 8 garden bed that’s made from cinder blocks that are three blocks high. And I have one that I bought from Lowe’s. That’s made out of lumber and cross cut garden blocks. It looks nice but it’s just too low to the ground for me. I’ll be 60 at the end of the year so all that bending is hard on my back. It’s maybe 15 inches high so I’m gonna see if I can find some scrap lumber or try and count the cost again with cinder blocks and hopefully talk to some landscapers in the neighborhood an ask for gardening scraps from grass leaves, branches and smaller logs. Thank you again for sharing.

Very nice! A couple years ago I built a raised bed but didn't have any scrap wood. Bought 6 2x8's 8 feet long (sorry, imperial here 😊) and had the store (HomeDepot) cut 2 of them in half for the ends. Also got a 4x4 12' long that they cut into 2' lengths, used these for the corner and middle posts. This makes a 4' x 8' bed about 15" high, cost about $85 with the screws and a couple hours to put together, not working very hard. I didn't bury the posts into the ground but used a 2x4 cross brace attached to the middle posts (buried in the dirt). Filled it with free compost from my local green waste dump (black gold) and have had the best tomatoes I've ever grown (and zucchni and broccoli).

Just finished my second quarantine / summer raised bed. Needing more garden space, and not wanting to cut sod to reach red clay. I had bare ground, but with grapevine roots underneath. Given these, I considered raised beds. Good neighbors gave me some old warped and broken boards, and rotten firewood. With some masonary and ring shank nails, scrap pieces for bracing the corners, fertilizer and bird seed bags to line the sides, and rocks to keep it off the ground I had additional garden space to grow needed vegetables. Chipping the rotten wood and limbs gave me some "soil" for fill. It may not be as pretty as yours, it is something a beginner without money for a tiller or digging tools, desire to weed, or wanting to continue beyond the quarantine can do.

I made a bunch of raised beds about 3 and 4 feet across out of concrete reinforcing wire. Then used zip ties to attach landscape fabric to the wire to hold in the cotton gin trash (compost). Got my dad and brother to help me to roll out 9 or 12 feet (some 3 or 4 meters it so), rolled them up into a big cylinder. We cut the verticle end off one and wrapped the horizontal ends around the other to with pliars to hold it together. Then I cut them in half to get about 3 foot in height.
I got the wire free from a relative since it was damaged but maybe a construction yard would make a deal. They are heavy and takes a bit of work but that's what I had.

I'm doing exactly this! First time gardening more than just a few plants. I'm in the US. I'm also using some of my old deck boards, which turned into old shed boards, which are now new garden boards! I'm even using an old door, lol. Trying to be as frugal as possible.
Starting with (3X) 8foot by 4foot by 2foot high beds with 6 posts each, and plan to expand when I get more wood and when we get some relief from this rain.. Made out of scrap lumber I've been able to get from cleaning out the warehouse at work, and finding on the side of the road (I found a few better pieces besides the door...). I have a different design than yours, but I'm hoping it will last at least a few years. Mine has plywood sides, instead of hardwood between the posts. But I did have enough wood to make a full wooden rectangle frame to top it all and that's really whats holding the posts and board together. It feels strong I guess. All in $0 so far. I even had plenty of deck screws taking apart some old projects. :D :D
To protect the plywood and posts I'm getting 6mil plastic that I plan to line the sides with.
I've got some really nice mulched leaves. About 20-25 large garbage bags of mixed stages of decomposition there's a lot of the dirt from the area mixed in as well. Some of it is 5+ years of leaves so its really nice and has worms in it! Some is just straight this years fall. I plan to use the wood from a tree we are trimming and another we are chopping down for the bottom of the beds. Then the rest of the fill I'm still kind of figuring out... I'm pretty sure I could fill all the beds with the mulched leaves/dirt mix, but its really packed tight and muddy. From reading up and watching RUclips I got the Idea to use peat moss to thin it out, not sure.
I have a strange situation in my backyard. We are at the bottom of a hill and that means when it rains, the backyard floods about 6-8 inches. Hence the 2ft tall beds. I need a lot of woodchips I think. I've got the beds spaced out 4ft apart, and I want to lay woodchips on the paths and on the last 2 or so inches of the beds. There is a service here in the US called CHIPDROP that works with local arborists, and you can sign up to be next in line to receive a drop in your area. Problem is that they deliver 20-30 sq yards, no less, and no warning. So I cancelled my request with them. Next it was craigslist. Lots of free dirt and woodchips I can pickup, but I don't have a truck (you'd be surprised how many 8ft planks of wood a Honda Civic can hold though). So I'm trying to plan a day without rain that I can rent a pickup and drive around picking up free dirt and wood chips :D
Thanks for your fun lighthearted videos. You're awesome and I can't wait to see your next vid. I've been going thru your back catalog :D

I acquired 3 sections of my neighbor's old cedar fencing he was replacing. I had to lower the grade around the patio to keep it from flooding in heavy rains. I have a tree that had some dead branches. I filled the bottom with the branches then filled the rest with the excess dirt. Topped it off with about 12 in. of quality soil. Been almost a year still holding together and growing stuff. I'm 68 if I can do it in the Texas heat of summer you can also.

I built my boxes with cedar fencing. However I also went lowes and got cheap aluminum flange and spray painted it dark brown and nailed it over the corners. I just used tin snips. I love these taller boxes. One I use as a compost heap.

My husband saw me watching videos last fall, so he decided to make me a "pretty" raised bed. All the fancy cuts, but he used some extra wood we had laying around. Well, at work last week, he removed a wall. He brought all the wood home and I now have another raised bed built, that looks exactly like this one! The first one he built me was way too deep, so I had him remove the "pretty" part as well as the top boards. Now it's perfectly imperfect, just like me!

I like the combination of different containers and recycling/upcycling. Some years ago a very talented interior designer showed me how to make mixed materials coordinate with each other. I had mixed picture frames but it applies to anything. She said: make them all the same color, they will look as if you planned them that way. I made mine pewter in color. I have metals, carved wood, straight wood and ceramics - and they look terrific. Yours will too if you can find the time.

This is almost exactly how I got my raised beds! I rent a little home on a horse farm. The farm owners took down one of their wood fences, and, instead of burning or tossing the wood, my landlady decided to build us tenants several raised beds. the ones close to my house are about 2 meters by not quite a meter (72 x 33 inches). The others are 2.5 x 1 meters. Are they perfect? Nope. Are they going to last a lifetime? Nope, but they'll work for several seasons. I can't wait to start planting!

Thanks for the vid. My mate is a logger. So I will grab a few lengths of 4 x 4 and a bunch of the flitches. People throw em away, but they work pretty well - just have to replace them a bit more often and sometimes square em up a bit. I asked a q elsewhere but it was from an old vid, so there's a chance that you might not see it, so I am going to be cheeky and ask here as well. We are a few 100 KM N of you at about 25Km W of Gin Gin. Lousy soil and an insane number of browns. I couldn't believe the number that I see each year. So the raised beds are the only real way that I can go. Because of the snakes, I have also placed a lot of stuff on our verandah. So here's the Q.......... I have a few passionfruit plants in pots. Only about 5 months old, but already I have 6 green fruit on them. Hope that they will ripen. Why do I say that? Because they are starting to look pretty sad and sorry. The leaves are starting to fall off and whatever are left are pretty floppy. Is this normal going into winter please Mark?

Hubby just agreed to let me order one of the Birdie's beds yesterday and used your discount code. Here in the U.S. they are backordered until late June. That's okay. I'll use it for our fall garden. Love the new bed you built. I think it is so important for people to understand that what is important is the ability to grow food (and growing food) and not so much what the beds or containers look like.

I’ve commented this before but you were my inspiration to build tall raised beds a few years back. I’m relatively young and spry but I still love the convenience. Also, we have rock hard clay soil in my area so the added height allows a much thicker layer of loose compost for my plants to enjoy.

    A few comments.
    1. I built my first two of these this year, one of new lumber, one of old deck boards that were a little soft. I built the ends first. Then I set up the ends and put the side planks inside the end uprights. So the soil pushes the side planks out against the uprights and it doesn't take much to hold the side planks in place.
    2. I did not put the uprights in the ground. Both raised beds, about 75 x 220 cm and 100 x 190 cm, sit on the ground with cardboard in the bottom and about 30 cm of sticks and small limbs inspired by the hugelkultur method that Mark did a video on.
    3. I bought a SunJoe electric chipper. I have about 5/8 acre in western Tidewater VA. Many larger wooded lots together in about 1+ mile of road and side roads. Lots of limbs and sticks available for chipping. So chips go on top of the larger sticks and limbs. Then soil, some from the woods out back and some from garden supply stores.
I don't know how this will turn out, but looks good so far. Allows a lot of plants in a small space and easy management of weeds.
Mark, keep up the great content. I have learned so much.

Just finished some raised beds here. We used landscaping timbers. Figured that using those would take the guesswork out of wondering whether or not they could handle the soil weight and bowing. We are super excited and have been sprouts already growing like crazy. Here in the sub tropics of southern Florida the chickens run wild in the community. We love them but since we are infringing on their land we have to cover our crops in what looks like a coop that would normally be for the birds. It's a nice reversal and I hope it's enough to protect our first raised bed crops. Thank you for all you do Mark. It's tough getting started but your message starting to be self sufficient in just something really keeps us going

I love your sense of humor and learn something from every single video at the same time. Built my own 40x80cm raised bed for my little balcony/terrace and will harvest my first own radishes and kohlrabi within a few weeks, the radishes even raised from seeds. Cost was less than 20 bucks since I used rough sawn roofing wood plus 15 bucks for a first fill of good compost soil. Seeing the result motivated me to build it up into a mini-greenhouse for another 30 bucks. I am out there watching stuff grow every day and it makes me super happy. In the meantime we also added more little pots and stuff and now everything is green there. Your channel was my reason to start this whole thing, so thank you very much!

G'day mate, good job! Just a couple of little tips to make your planters last even longer!
    1. Cut the top of you posts on a 45 angle so water doesn't pool on the top and make it's way down into the posts causing them to rot.
    2. Paint the top and bottom 30cms of the posts with liquid tar or bitumen ($10 from bunnings#cheap# goes a long way) to water proof and prevent them from rotting.
    3. Stapel any type of plastic sheet on the inside of your planter walls...you can buy this from your local building supplies store or reuse plastic from e.g. mattres plastic wrap or weed matting ect. This will prevent moisture from cotacting the walls and causing them to rot.
Hope these tips were helpful, I don't profess to know everything, but I love to share my experiences to help others. Keep up the great videos, they are awsome!👍
