Years later in 2012 at the London Olympics, a Kenyan friend in the Olympics team cheering squad said they bemused other foreign spectators during Caster Semenya's win medal ceremony! It was a beautiful hymn (1897) long before it was "claimed" by the ANC. I think it is a sad and undignified that you use this hymn to encourage more conflict...The very same hymn that is asking God to bless us and if you are tempted to send this old whitey back to where she comes from, be warned...that place in my heart that I hold dear is Zululand! My ancestors arrived in KZN in 1820 AD, Shaka's ancestors arrived in about 1500 AD.... and they stayed because it was worth it. We are all here because of the choices made by our ancestors, the Nguni just got here first! So before you lash out, sing it in your heart, spread the love and the blessing.
I have heard many versions of this famous anthem/hymn. When I was getting married, I used the it as bridal “matching-out” song for our church service. This is the best version. They should have sang the long version...it would have made Madiba wake up from his sleep.
