    In this episode, we take an in-depth look at Sennheiser’s new entry level digital wireless microphone system, the XSW-D. In particular, we put the portable lavalier set to the test. The XSW-D is made to be as simple to use as a cable, according to Sennheiser. And based on our tests, we agree.
    The transmitter and receiver are very small, include in-built batteries with over 5 hours of powering time, and there’s only a single button so you don’t have to fuss with a bunch of settings. Of course, there are trade-offs when you make things this simple, but overall, it seems that Sennheiser has made a winning option for solo video shooters and those who don’t know a lot about audio production but want high quality audio.
    If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnli... including processing dialogue audio, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F8 and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders.

    Nice review, with spot-on counselling about dos and don'ts.
    Aside from all technical aspects and features, I see this new product range as a key for non-sound-specialists to step right in good-sounding videos/presentations/mini-gigs, etc.
    After years as an actor, I know a thing or two about how to mic a talent, on a set or a stage... and the hassle of it all. But I'm also an entertainer and host/presenter... thus having the "joy" to install / set /adjust / troubleshoot my own soundgear. And boy is it giving me headaches sometimes !!!
    I've always managed to get great results, and sometimes was being requested as the good samaritain pulling out collegues from "technical traps". We all know these old venues, shops, theatres, conference halls, event places... where sound system was installed by no-one-knows-who, with some obscure gear, decades-old basic loudspeakers, pinched cables, dusty-crusty amplifiers, karaoke-type mixers, etc. In such places, you can easily lose 2 hours trying to figure where is what, and how to get the thing to sound decent. If ever !
    In such places and situations, having to just plug-press-pair-run is more than mind-relaxing. The clever folks at Sennheiser know how to conceive gear and whom for... I guess they've just done it once more.

    This system works great with my Canon Rebel T5i, but it was gold for me while acting on stage. I needed a small, easy to hide unit with no antenna that could be damage while performing in a play at Cleveland State University. All the other actors were wearing regular wireless mics but my character -a hostage strapped to a chair, was a very physical role being roughed around and getting wet. So I took a chance and ordered a unit. Love it! The transmitter easily hid in a microphone belt on my back under my t-shirt (and under a full business suit on initial scenes) with the mic wire running up behind my neck and pinned just above my forehead's hairline (I have shoulder length hair). The mic worked like a charm and the sound quality was better than the other mics. The unit was on for two and a half hours without any battery problems. Now we are considering getting more units (and hoping for the price to go down) Still, for live stage, I highly recommended it.

    The in office obstruction (loss of line of sight) test was impressive (>100'), especially when compared to the Rode Wireless GO( 15-30'). If you anticipate this condition, such as weddings, I would go with this system.

    I shoot videos in my personal office.
    What’s your recommendation for a dual channel wireless lavaliere system?
    What about for a 3 channel wireless lav system?
    Basically, I want 2 or 3 talents to each have a wireless lav mic.
    I currently have the Azden pro Xd which sounds fine except it isn’t dual channel.
    I shoot with my iPhone X. Thanks!!!

      @curtisjudd  5 лет назад +1

      Hi! You're looking to record 3 lavalier microphones to an iPhone X? You might consider AirLinc over at airlinc.io
      Then you'll need lavalier microphones for each of the phones. The Sennheiser ClipMic Digital is a decent option for iPhones: bhpho.to/2yOdLr4
      The Sennheiser MKE2 Digital is quite a lot better sounding but much more expensive: bhpho.to/2B2WxME

I'm considering buying Beachtek DXA-MICRO-PRO PLUS and 2 sets of these Sennheiser sets, so I could record 2 people at the same time and reduce the levels, if required. Do you think that's a good idea? I'm using GH5. It's a lot of money, so it might take me a very long time to save that much money to improve my horrible audio 🤣

    Great review! Good point about the inability to reduce the output level. Otherwise it looks good, but I'm hesitant to ever buying a device, other than a phone or a USB battery, with a built in non replaceable battery. I once bought some flash triggers from a reputable brand that only saw light use, and after three years the built in battery wouldn't charge anymore. So that was 300 USD worth of "disposable" flash triggers down the drain. A built in battery basically sets an expiration date on the device based on the longevity of the battery - unless the device is so popular that after market battery replacement service is available - like it is for phones. And then there's the challenge of not being able to quickly swap out batteries if the device runs out of power while you're using it - as you already pointed out. I like the size, and I'm sure it's a fine device, but I prefer replaceable batteries.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Ray, understood. I think they're aiming for a slightly different crowd, but I'm not sure there's a distinct group of people that would rather give up the ability to set the input and output levels for smaller TX and RX units. I guess the market will speak for itself. :)

    Curtis, my ear clearly gives the winner to the Sennheiser over the Rode. The Senn sounds richer and not "echoey" as the Rode does. To me, there is no comparison: the win goes to the Senn. Great review! Much appreciated.

  • @mrheng562
    @mrheng562 5 лет назад +2

    Very nice and thorough review. I chuckled quite a bit when you we’re doing the range test and breathing heavy.
    I’ve done some vlogging with the XSWD, and one other note to mention is that the clipping system is better on the Rode Link. The XSWD is not good when placed in the back pocket. I vlog placing it in my front pocket to avoid it unclipping and dangling from my back pocket. Overall, I’m happy with it when vlogging with my GoPro7, Oly EM5ii, and Canon EOS RP. It’s fast to set up, but construction is quite weak. The threading that connects the 3.5 input for the receiver will not screw on and connect, and this is my second set that does that. I returned the first set because of that reason, but I’m suspecting this is a consistent reoccurring thing. Please double check you set over time and let me know if your set does that over time. Thanks!
    Another thing is the construction for my receiver holding clamp is wobbling due to weak plastics construction. Again, please double check your unit over time.
    And, after seeing your different lav mid, I’m considering buying one that’s smaller because people sometimes stare at my mic clipped around my neck area. LOL!!!

    If you're in an office like that normally I've found 2.4GHZ transmissions will do better than in a home or any other situation for that matter. I'm not sure if it's repeaters or the surface not obsorbing the 2.4GHZ but my testing in a home setup did not do this good at all on obstacle range with this unit

    Instead of the supplied 3.5mm audio cable to connect the receiver to the GH5 camera, I used a Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N 3.5mm Line to Mic 9-Inch Audio Cable which has 25dB of attenuation. I adjusted the audio gain on the GH5 to 0dB and this produced clean audio that peaked at -12dB with the lav mic with no limiter required. In conclusion, the audio from the Sennheiser XSW-D is about 13 dB too hot for the GH5 using the supplied 3.5mm audio cable and the audio gain set all the way down to -12dB.

    Curtis, I'm a wedding videomaker and I bought the Comica Boomx-u and I didn't like because it have much interference
    Do you think, in 2020, the senheiser is a good option? Or rode wireless go is best?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 года назад

      All of these 2.4GHz consumer wireless systems will have interference issues if there's a lot of wifi or other wireless activity in the same location. The Sennheiser and RODE might be a little better, but they're not a panacea, definitely not perfect either. When the person wearing them turns, the RODE in particular tends to drop the signal. The Sennheiser did a little better, but still not perfect.

    Great review -- But one thing that I was hoping you would mention is how it compares to in sound quality to say EW100 G3 lavs... I am attracted to the xsw's form factor and the fact that it seems made for cameras like the BMPCC 4k the Rode that you compare it to is not so attractive to me for the exact reason (form factor) but I have been relatively happy with the sound I have got from my EW100 G3's and if you think that this sound is comparable that may be enough for me.

      Hi Josh, you can use any microphone with a 3.5mm TRS plug for Sennhesier. I prefer the included microphone over the Aspen mic. But you can use third party mics, they just need to be specifically wired/terminated for Sennheiser (often they will say for Sennheiser Evolution Wireless G3/G4).

    Hi Curtis. Thanks for another informative review. I bought two sets of these a month ago for my church and they have worked well for the last three Sunday services. I got the lavaliere set with the XLR audio out on the receiver because they plug into our mixing board. Problem is, we rent our space for only four hours each Sunday. Everything gets packed away into a box and stored in a self-store garage with no mains power for recharging. My solution for recharging is to purchase a rechargeable power bank so we can pack the four devices plugged into the power bank and they can recharge at their leisure. Each week, when we set up we will plug the power back in so that it recharges during the service.
    The Sennheiser Product Information sheet informed me that each device has a 850 mA-hr rated at 3.7 V which is 3145 mW-hr so I'll need a power pack with at least that capacity times four, or 12580 mW-hr . I could keep the two receivers plugged into a charger the whole time they are in use. I don't know if that would keep them fully charged but it would reduce the recharge power overall.
    I measured the current a fully-charged receiver consumes when operating as 240 mA at 5 V. That's 1200 mW. A receiver at about half-charge pulled 410 mA when off and charging. When on and charging it pulled 480 mA. I'm not sure I can draw an accurate assessment of how much having them plugged in while in use will extend their battery endurance or reduce their charge consumption from the battery pack.
    Oh, they only send one charging cable with a transmitter/receiver set, so you'll have to pick up another cable if you want to change them at the same time, which do.

      Filmic is great, what what about live streamers using this mic, Here we have a mic geared to for mobile vlogging that does not really work on mobiles. For a company to make a compact mic that won't work properly on mobile when most of the videos on RUclips are made on mobile is Pretty disappointing. Good review, people should just keep this in mind. This is a major design omission.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 лет назад +2

      Totally understand the frustration. With cameras, usually dialing the mic input gain back is better for the audio quality in the end because you reduce the amount of amplification the camera has to do to the signal. However, I agree that it would be nice to dial the output of the receiver back just a notch for cameras like the Panasonic GH5.
      Totally understand re: mobile as well. A look at Sennheiser's marketing materials suggests that they did NOT intend for this to be used with mobile devices And, this particular kit includes a hotshoe mount for DSLR/Hybrid cams as well as a TRS output cable and does NOT include a TRRS cable for mobile phones. One could easily argue that they foolishly missed the mobile market. But I do think they specifically had DSLR and hybrid dedicated cameras in mind for this product.

    I bought this from Amazon a few days ago and am sending it back tomorrow. I am very disappointed in this Sennheiser system. I planned to use it as a mic for my iPhone 13 Pro which I am using to shoot news. My main mic will be Deity as it has a proper XLR transmitter but I needed a back up. I was between the Sennheiser ENG set and Godox move link. Godox move link was much better. The reasons why I really disliked this Sennheiser :
    1 It doesn't have a port for headphone. The Godox has one on its transmitter, which plugs directly to my iPhone. I had to use a Rode adapter so I could connect the Sennheiser receiver to my iPhone and also monitor the sound being recorded.
    2 The noise of a quiet room when I used the lavaliere was too present. I could hear a strong buzzing added to sounds of the street that I would normally not hear. I am no sound expert but didn't need to be one to notice that there was much less "buzzing" when I used Deity lavaliere and Godox lavaliere. So, I couldn't say it was something wrong with my phone as I used the same settings (50% gain) and the same cam app (Beastgrip cam). The noise of the room was present only in the Sennheiser recording.
    3 I plugged a Rode reporter to the XLR transmitter. I could never work with it because the sound was just too low. Again, everything else the same, I plugged the Rode to the Deity XLR transmitter and the sound was louder.
    4 It doesn't have phantom power so I am limited in my choice of microphones. I have a Neumann handheld which needs power and could use it with the Deity as its transmitter powered the mic. But I couldn't use it with the Sennheiser . The sound of the Godox attached to its handheld adapter was much stronger and clear than the sound of this Sennheiser using the Rode mic. The handheld adapter transmits more noise when handled than a real mic would do but I used it to record Vox pops and had no problems. But I was holding it . I would be really worried if I was working with a. reporter as some of them like to move the mic and that noise will go directly to the sound of the interview, ruining it. The option to use a XLR transmitter (and , therefore, a real mic) is the only reason why I am considering the Godox Wmic S1 pro to use as my back up mic instead of the Movelink. Maybe the Godox would be even my main mic instead of the Deity?
    I am actually surprised seeing the number of positive reviews about the Sennheiser. I wouldn't say the problem is caused because I am recording to an iPhone because, as I said before, the same mic performed better when I used a Deity transmitter.
    Surprised and sad because I didn't like to see a mic from such a traditional and well known company, Sennheiser, being outperformed by a relatively new company which, I am sorry but I can't help it, makes me think of cheap products.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  2 года назад

      Sennheiser microphones and inputs are wired slightly differently than most other 3.5mm interfaces so that is likely why you got the buzzing sound. If your use case is to use third party mics with this or any other Sennheiser system, they need to be specifically wired for Sennheiser 3.5mm.

    • @umbertoaguiar
      @umbertoaguiar 2 года назад

      @@curtisjudd Thanks for your reply. My comment was too long so maybe things got lost in translation. I used the Sennheiser lavaliere with the Sennheiser transmitter and receiver. It was all Sennheiser. Yet, there was a lot of buzz. And I can't blame the iPhone because there was no buzz with Godox's and Deity's lavaliere mics
      I should have recorded a video and used it as review but was in a hurry. One thing I didn't do in my test was to use the Sennheiser lavaliere with other systems, the Deity for example, and use another lavaliere with the Sennheiser transmitter. That would have cleared any doubts. Too late now as I've sent the set back. I've ordered the Godox pro system. It is compatible with their XLR transmitter and that is essential to me as I need to connect a reporter mic to my phone. I've already have the Deity but as I said I never go out with a sound back up. But the microphone will be only one, obviously. There is just so much I can carry in my backpack. I've ordered a Sennheiser MD 46 as I am not too happy with the Rode reporter mic. The Godox movelink with its handheld adapter is going back. The handheld adapter could be very noisy in the wrong hands but the main reason why I decided to make this change is because some reporters are open to new technologies but many are not. The only tool a reporter uses is a microphone so they will feel more comfortable if they are facing a phone instead of a camera if the microphone is a real reporter mic, with which they are familiar with.
      That Godox adapter looks rather tacky and unprofessional but the sound of the little transmitter was strong and clear. But to make the reporter feel more comfortable is more important hence a XLR plugged to a microphone instead of a small transmitter on the top of the handle.
      I have a Sennheiser MKE 400 and am very impressed with its capacity to reject wind noise. But this kit from Sennheiser is rather amateurish to my thinking.The fact that a receiver for small equipment doesn't have a port for a headphone always tells me a lot.
      I am new to this world of smartphones, SLRs and RUclips. I am old school and when I started to work as a cameraman there was only one professional video camera: Sony U-Matic which was followed by Sony Betacam. I think Ikegami was also making cameras but I worked only with Sony. Panasonic and JVC were doing only VHS at the time. Blackmagic didn't even exist then. And SLRs didn't record video.
      And microphones were invariably Sony or Sennheiser. Things were much simpler then...
      Now it's such a jungle of names and options that can easily drive one crazy. I spent no less than a month buying equipment, researching, reading, watching reviews here.
      Incidentally, thanks for your reviews. They are among the reviews who really helped me in my marathon of equipment buying.
      It was a lot o try and error. A lot of sending things back to B&H and losing the money I had spent on taxes and shipping. I bought most of what I wanted on Amazon or UK online shops but many times B&H was the only option and sometimes even the faster. It takes less time to receive a product from B&H in the US than from Germany, for example.
      So, being new to this world I was rather suspicious of everything small and with names unknown to me. But I've learned very fast to be less, say, snob, and worked with the likes of Deity etc. I just love the freedom that mobile phones give me. I am going to post at some point a long review called "How to shoot news with an iPhone or how I learned to stop worrying and love cam apps".
      Small is beautiful 🙃

    Wanted to ask if I use this with a Zoom F3 can it be a 32 bit float recording avoiding clipping issue if it happens ? Also which adapter would be good for connecting the receiver to the zoom F3. Rode VXLR with no power change or a Rode VXLR+ with power conversion.

      No, the wireless kit can clip before the audio ever gets to the F3.

    I've heard lots of bad reviews on this??

      Ok. Make sure you take into account multiple data points/videos. I saw one test on RUclips where a guy walked out of his house, closed the door and was upset that the connection dropped. This is actually expected when transmitting in the 2.4GHz frequency like this does. So you have to come to it with realistic expectations. If you're generally going to be within line of sight of the receiver, this is a super simple option for wireless audio.

    Love your reviews and channel! QUESTION: do you recommend the avx, xs-d, or G4 for "noticably" better sound quality?

      @curtisjudd  5 лет назад

      Hi, no need for an adapter, just run the receiver into the H5's 3.5mm microphone input.

      If you can get it in a 3.5mm TRS for Sennheiser config then it’ll work.
