MKE2 killed it! I'm glad I bought that lav mic. I wanted to see a comparison of the most popular lavs, so thank you for this video! Great accent too for narration.
Can confirm, using MKE2 since the mid 2000s. It is crazy that now almost 20 years later, I am still using them and there is still nothing really better on the market. Never had a capsule drown in sweat, never had cable issues and they still sound and perform like on the first day. (mine are the beige types for direct glued to cheek or forehead).
Carl, you make excellent videos, I always find myself searching youtube for videos comparing products before I purchase. My searches bring me to many reviews, but I always find myself coming back to watch yours multiple times. Your reviews are very clear, concise, detailed without a ton of non-relevant information, and Most of all I do not feel like you are pushing a certain product and you are giving a true user review. I just ordered the Sennheiser avx mke2 after watching this review as well as your avx review. I was torn on the me2 vs mke2, but I know I will kick myself if I do not buy the mke2. It is more expensive, but it's cheaper in the kit, vs buying after the fact. Keep up the great work. Michael Frisch
MKE2 Fav on your voice here. These lav mics always have a thinner less natural sound to me than say a good shotgun or certainly a good VO larger mic. However, the tiny buggers can clip on your shirt. Off axis recording of the omni design seems essential if you are turning your head at all.
Thank god I listened to your test on the cardioid mic before getting one - I can't see any use for it other than interviewing someone standing next to a jumbo jet!
I think the main use case for the ME4 is with a PA system as the cardioid pattern will help minimise feedback. I've seen them used in presentations in an auditorium. They were also recommended for use with a Visual Radio (automatic camera selection) system, but they proved unusable in a small studio as when the presenters turned their heads, the sound level fell off dramatically.
Quite impressed with the ME2, probably gonna pick one up for my next shoot. Usually use a shotgun mic but doing a small budget shoot where I’m doing it all solo, so no budget for a shotgun mic operator. Probably just going to run the lav from a 3.5mm extension cable as I haven’t got a wireless pack and feel like a cable will probably be a bit easier and more reliable as I don’t have to worry about batteries on a two day shoot. Thanks!
Well, personally me4 isn't really that bad as most comments mentioned here. I own plenty of ew100 series with me2 and me4. A few days ago, I was doing a live-streamed talk show, where there were three people sitting around a small round coffee table and talking in a non-treated room. When I tried me2 in this case, mic spill was a pretty significant, and it was causing some phasing issues due to its omnidirectional pick up pattern. Then we decided to give me4 a try.... problem solved. So, yes....it really depends on the scenario you're in.
Jw van der Vlies if I could buy one for recording music on the iPhone but I want it to be decent quality but not so expensive, which one you’d advice me?
the ME4 sounded absolutely awful! I have just purchased the G4 ew100 which has the me2 i think, so pleased with your video as i think i made the right choice
My favorite is definitely the MKE 2. Having worked with several lavalier microphones and some MKE 2 variants, it just sounds superb with such an amount of presence. Still to this day, no other lavalier was able to deliver nealy the same amount of presence. The competition with shotgun microphones has to offer some really great alternatives, but the lavalier mic field just doesnt in my experience.
I do a lot of films where the actors yell! And sometimes the mics distort , even with the levels turned down on the units ,have you came across this with the mke2
Thanks so much for making this video. I use the Sennheiser G3 Wireless system and made the mistake of purchasing a lavalier mic from the local music store. It was just a little cheaper but not much and it sounded like garbage in comparison to the Sennheiser products.
Unfortunately the MKE 2 has major problems with digital transmitters. We weren't able to use it with the Sennheiser AVX or the Rode Wireless Go II without any interferences.
I've been using two MKE-2 mics with AVX transmitters for the past 6 years in a variety of indoor and outdoor venues and there's never been an issue with interference - they've worked perfectly and reliably. One possible cause could be poor impedance matching between the receiver and whatever recording device you use. My AVX receivers are almost permanently plugged into a couple of C100 MK-II cameras, or occasionally to a Sound Devices 633 audio recorder.
The MKE-2 was much clearer (crisper at the high end) and the most natural sounding to my ear. I suspect that is reflected in the frequency response. You pay more for that of course.
Hi. I intend to stream in a workshop environment and I needed to know if cardioids mics are worth it because there is a lot of heavy noises around me (impact guns, air compressor...) Thank you for taking the time, the ME4 is really worth buying for me compared to the others.

Hello, do you know if there’s a difference between ME2 and ME2-II? You call it ME2 while talking, but during testing you put ME2-II as a label on the screen. Turns out Sennheiser has both models on their website, so I wonder if there’s a difference?
I just purchased the ME 2-II for my iPhone 11 Pro Max setup, it sounds fantastic! Using it through the Rode Wireless GO System with the Rode SC7 cable which allows the system to work with the iPhone. Pretty happy with the sound! I might end up picking up the MKE2 soon, as I love the way it sounds as well as how easy it is to hide. What can you recommend for these microphones when filming outdoors in high wind, to remove/prevent the wind noise? Thanks
@@kevinbrown8792 Sorry, not sure.. For me as soon as I plug the rode mic in and turn it on it automatically records using the rode mic. I use the filmic pro app, in the settings it allows you to change the mic, which is what I did.

Maybe my Mix-Pre 10ii will be able to that, or I may have to do it Old School and clap/slate in Post/Software.
Wow, me4 sounded terrible…I was really hoping that one would sound the best. Was the problem the placement, because it's cardioid, or does it just sound bad?
That's the way it sounds, a cadiod mic has what is called the proximity effect, the further it is from the source the thinner it sounds. It should only be used if you need to reject the noise in the room or you are using it on a live stage and gain before feedback is a concern. It will sound allot better with a little EQ.
Interesting comparison. The MKE-2 is much fuller, and will be much more accepting to EQing in post. Of note, you placed the MKE-2 upside down in the test. This is something I will do if subjects are standing, but wouldn’t ever do if someone is sitting, given that their lap can cause a phasing or slightly muffled sound.

Sennheiser makes a MZA 900 P power adapter for directly converting 3.5mm plug-with-locking-connector mics to XLR for hardwire connections (with phantom power) - en-us.sennheiser.com/mza-900-p Then you'd have to connect your XLR cable to an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett Solo or similar, which would connect to your PC via USB and use the included Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software to record.

I will have a brand deal one from Sennheiser probably (XSW-D PORTABLE LAVALIER SET) and I'm thinking how this will sound in an interview if I only use one mic. Thanks!
The MKE2 and ME2 are omnidirectional but the ME4 is cardioid and so it's not much use pointed in the 'wrong' direction. In terms of picking up the speaker the MKE2 and ME2 can be oriented in any direction. One reason to point a mic 'down' is if the speaker is likely to for some reason breath hard (sneeze or cough perhaps). Some people feel the sharp sibilance can be reduced by pointing downwards too.
Indeed it will, however the 3.5mm input on the Wireless GO isn't a locking connection, so it may come loose if pulled. We're currently working on a overview of the Wireless GO, so stay tuned for that. Dan
You said that the MKE2 is better build in terms of hardware, but how is the sound quality like compared to the ME2? Is it clearly noticeable? Instead they use the more consumer minijack plug.
What about cable friction noise w/ MKE 2? I just have purchased it and it's killing me. A loop helps a bit but I have never faced such issue with ME 2. After so many positive reviews on MKE 2 I start to think it's me or my cable is defective
the MKE 2 has the worst cable noise of any of the lav mics we own. A decent loop is important and we also tape the cable itself to clothing or to the skin to stop any movement
Do check if the cable is not defective. I've had a lot of cable noise on my MKE 2 which I later found to be caused by the clip that came with it. The clip was pinching the cable too much causing damage to the cable. Sennheiser service then told me to buy a new mic.
Yes, the mke-2 EW gold has a stiff shielded cable that can cause a lot of noise. As Jeff Brass said, if you experiment with a decent loop, and taping the cable to clothing you can get rid of the noise completely with some practise.
Grace De Villa No, not directly. Search i.e. for den Rode Smart Lav and you‘ll see that the cinch cable has 3 black rings (TRRS) while the cinch cable of any other microphone only has 2 rings (TRS). To record with a mobile phone you always need a TRRS cable so that your phone will register incoming sound. Maybe it works with a TRS to TRRS adapter but I haven‘t tried that.

Yes, the mke-2 EW gold has a stiff shielded cable that can cause a lot of noise. As Jeff Brass said, if you experiment with a decent loop, and taping the cable to clothing you can get rid of the noise completely with some practise.
Is me2 can be used in mobile phone?
Grace De Villa
No, not directly. Search i.e. for den Rode Smart Lav and you‘ll see that the cinch cable has 3 black rings (TRRS) while the cinch cable of any other microphone only has 2 rings (TRS).
To record with a mobile phone you always need a TRRS cable so that your phone will register incoming sound.
Maybe it works with a TRS to TRRS adapter but I haven‘t tried that.
Hello friend, I need some help if it is possible
I am a total beginner in audio domaine,
I have a Sennheiser Sennheiser MKE 40-EW and a Sennheiser MZA 900p
I don't know how to use them at all, I wanted to make them function with my phone by a trrs trs adapter from rode but it seems that it does not work, I don't know if the lavalier can work with a zoom h1 if I buy one or it needs something else to work ?
thank you by advance for your help :)
Hey Acen I bought a few days ago a ME2 with the trs plus Zoom H1. Tested the ME2 and MEK2 and them both worked with no problem. It should work fine too, with the MKE 40-EW if it has an trs.
@@tupacfilms thank you so much 😊
@@acen792 I bought two of the MKE2 Mics with XLR, and without a transmitter and receiver. I run it into my Sound Devices Mix-Pre 10ii. Incredible.

Any thoughts on this lav from SLINT? amzn.to/31VuUBk
And mine too Roly. Since when was the plural of dog dog's?
A pro production - but guys look up how to spell processing......
Isn't it different across the pond tho? Like how in NA we spell realize with a z and across the pond it's realise. That's what I thought.
ME4 is the worst.
Sounds like your ME4 might be defective. Can't believe Sennheiser would sell something like this...
Turn the MKE2 towards you to make a fair comparison next time please
Apostrophe in the wrong place!
Sorry, it's a bugbear of mine
Thanks for pointing that out, all fixed now!
Dan
Bug bear? But i just want to see somebody yelling or speaking loud with these mic
The whole of this video sounded quiet and muffled.
