How to Replace a Reversing Valve on a Heat Pump. EP75

- So we're on this unit again. The previous tech diagnosed a bad reversing valve which was causing the unit to not heat properly. I got sent out to change out the reversing valve. This is my first reversing valve replacement, I've been able to avoid it until now. Here's the process on replacing the reversing valve on my favorite heat pump. Enjoy!!!

Use the Carrier method of reversing valve replacement. Cut it out and use couplings to install.
How does that work?
Left HVAC for a new trade 15 yrs ago.Never saw a heat pump til I went south. My first RV is soon. You made it look too easy. I'll be watching your videos, even if just for fun. Great stuff.
A rose bud would of made sweating the reversing valve in much easier. Highly recommend
Nice professional repair
Thanks for sharing an excellent wor!!
Good video. Thank you for all of the info.
Thanks for sharing man
Great video. Thanks for putting this together.
Nice!
Good job man
what about the heat blanket , you think that would work better.?
Did you double check to make sure the value is bad
Nice work
We have done a lot of reversing valves mostly large commercial though 1 1/8, 1 3/8, that was extremely painful to watch, get a pair of cable cutters from harbor freight tools and cut the 4 pipes at the body, if needed remove the condenser coil. We did two at a church last month, From the time the first pipe was cut until the last braze was less than thirty minutes. Also with the larger ones we use two torches, a guy with a turbo and a guy with oxygen acetylene doing the brazing. If your supply house has any warranty reversing valves I suspect most of them are going to be cut off with cable cutters, seeing one cut at the supply house is actually how I learned the trick.
Why flip the recovery tank? Can’t you just go back with the liquid port?
Yeah cut the valve out next time. Makes it way way easier. Unsweat the discharge and cut the rest out with your yellow or greens.
Way to go, nice
Curious question? Between replacing the compressor, outdoor TXV, and the three way valve. Wouldn’t it been cheaper and better for the customer to just replace the entire condenser? Between all that labor parts had to have been less expensive to just put a new condenser? and customer get a new 5 year on the compressor plus new labor warranty.
This was discussed with the client but they opted to make the repairs. You haven’t seen the air handler. That’s another headache.
Some people either can't afford a new one or don't care to use financing.
That recovery bottle has a spout that goes to the bottom for the liquid you don’t have to turn those upside down I think that was counter productive
I’m aware of that. That’s why my hose was attached to the vapor side.
When charging on heat, aren’t you supposed to hook to the true suction line?
Very good Experience

What’s the name of that swager? Thanks
It’s a Hilmor Compact Swage Tool Kit 3/8" To 7/8”.

Thanks Bro!
What should the thermostat setting be set on for the reversing valve? Cool or heat?
It depends on the brand. Most heat pumps are default heat which means when the reversing valve is not energized it’s in heat mode. Requiring a call for Y for heat. In cooling the reversing valve is energized setting it to cooling mode. This is requiring a call for Y and O. Other brands are default cool which is opposite of this. Rheem and Ruud are default cool. Meaning for cooling only a call for Y is required. For heat Y and B are required.
That’s why some heat pumps have a O and others have a B. O= default heat energized for cooling B= default cool energized for heat. Y= Compressor calls for compressor. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Makes me sad watching this, dude cut the damn valve out, and do the work outside of the unit
Outta AC pre-2010. Asked 2 swap a 4 wy vlv. Many outside da box swaps in NC. No good? Never thought bout it til just now? PS: No N2? Never tuched a unit w/out it. Any thoughts. Appreciate it. Best wishes/Best of luck.
Next time use your recovery machine and push the refrigerant into your equipment.
I thought about that but I have never tried it. Would there be any negative effects to the system?
@@NighthawkHVAC it is the opposite of what you did to recover the refrigerant.
Now it is the cylinder that you are pulling from and your system is what you are pushing too. Nothing negative about it. So you would not need to use your torch like you did to build the pressure (just view it as you recovered your system you didn’t need to increase the pressure from it), you would just need to keep your cyclinder on the scale to read what you pushed back into your heat pump.
Nice. I’ll try that on the next one. Thanks.
@@NighthawkHVAC Just make sure you do not fill up your accumulator when you push freon in the system with your recovery machine unless you are just going to weigh it in and not look at your pressures. I could not tell if your bypass port was before or after the accumulator. We like to push the freon in the liquid line to prevent this. Nice work.
R410 should be charged in Liquid state. Recovery machine does vapour
