@@JarlBarbossa Honestly, probably because it has some of the best build quality and feel of an official handheld console. I have one, but the screen started leaking LCD fluid, so I'm using an n3ds small boi until I can get it fixed. The n3ds's build quality is ALSO really great! :)
I'm so glad this project is getting more eyes on it! I know Joseph and Jonas are working on refining it, but old friend ~capitalism~ gets in the way of everyone's fun. In our chats I think a lot of the button stiffness comes from the switches being too hard and small. Either fitting in the OEM switches OR somehow getting it to work with membrane and no switches, could help. (So don't worry, the newer revision wouldn't have solved the latter issue :') Although your speaker issue would've been because the V1 actually doesn't take a speaker haha) Excited to see how your ribbon cable works out! And thanks for the shoutout - I got a number of very excited pings about it
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271Nah, sometimes games designed with portability and a small screen just don’t feel right on a real controller and a real monitor
You know you can buy grips that go onto the SP and make it way more comfortable right? Plus then you get the backlit screen and the rechargeable battery.
I think if the Anbernic RG280V does fine for some people, this potentially can too, but needs more thought put into the design. Shoulder buttons are always tricky with these vertical and square designs.
This mod is no longer available to build yourself. You can now only buy it as a prebuilt version with all of the additional costs that come with that since the original model was taken down
Seeing this video made me notice the disparities between the way you and Macho Nacho Productions would approach this project and the resulting videos. I feel like the two of you would make for an interesting follow-up collab video on this particular mod.
That was a painful video to watch man. But I think its amazing that you've gotten so far into the modding scene to wire in your own components and even design a daughter board for the whole thing. Kudos, and kinda wanna try that Dune Coffee ^^
This project looks cool! With my shaky ass hands I could never do something like this. Nor do I have a gameboy anymore. But these are always fun to watch!
your experience sounds exactly like my experience with my first build of xipher's slab. Down to me mistakenly buying the old revision pcb and case so I had a much harder time getting it together then most people do.
Up until today I always assumed Bob was just fumbling his way through soldering, as many do (and perfectly acceptable). But the fact that he designed a PCB reveals so much more. Clearly mans does not reveal much about his actual ability.
Gameboy RUclips is fucking wild. I'm not a purist when it comes to retro games and happy with emulation, but I love the dedication y'all have to be spending hundeeds of bucks and days of labour to use OG hardware. 🖤
You would think with how often Bob has tinkered with electronic devices that he’d be better at this by now. Every time I watch these videos he always breaks things and doesn’t like the outcome
If there was a kit for that thing, preferably done in a way so that one doesn't need to do the soldering and cable routing, this would be pretty cool thing to have. Love the design albeit it's practicability may be something else.
Part of the problem with part fit is due to material choices. Typically a 3D print file will have been optimized for a particular machine + filament combo and because different machines and filaments behave differently, you'll get slightly different dimensions in the final parts when it comes to your tolerances. As such, it'd be possible to get it all dialed in for things like the clear resin or aluminum, but it'd be a process of having to test-print, check the fit, and make iterative changes. In other words, an expensive pain in the butt lol
... Might I recommend getting some plastic and making a shroud with some holes cut into it? If you place the [gameboy beep sfx] bit's of plastic along the side's of the case, you can keep the wire's inside the sandwhich when buttoning it up or closing it again.
This is literally the device that I want, just chunkier so it can physically also play GB/GBC and GBA cartridges. THIS WOULD BE THE PERFECT HANDHELD FOR ME.
Froggy's Frog Boy Color is so so so close, just missing GBA capabilities and I don't like the volume wheel being on the front rather than embedded into the side.
I want to make a guess that your weird d-pad issue could be wire shorts when you screwed it together. To prevent such issues, I'd use cut electrical tape to separate them (tape one wire at a time down)
This thing is the coolest looking modded gba yet! I'd love to try this out one day. I loved using the micro so maybe I wouldn't mind this form factor 🙂↕️
For SP i would prefer the slate mods as they look sleeker and return to the form factor the DMG light Pocket and Color had along with removing the hinges (although GBA's horizontal layout much better for me meaty hands)
If you out the buttons above the screen it would be more comfortable to hold and i don't think it would he too hard not to conver the screen with your tbumbs based on my testing of "holding a closed sp for a few seconds."
Interesting, but I feel like my hands would just cramp no matter how I hold it. What I really need is a 3DS attachable comfort grip. still looking around for one of those.
Hey Bob, please do a video about the OneXPlayer X1 if you can. I hope such large format 3 in 1 handhelds become more popular and tech companies take it very serious!
I am in fucking love. This is perfect for me. I mean it might be awkward cause my hands are big BUT on my Gameboy I'm pretty much only playing Tetris now and just emulate Pokemon. I've always been a sucker for tiny electronics and as a kid, tiny toys. I need this Now.
I like how its the exact same dimensions as an SP just 1000% more uncomfortable
😆

Why doesn't anyone mod the n3dsXL?

This man had the audacity to make a milkshake and call it a coffee.
The question is: Does it bring all the boys to the yard?
Milk be hittin 🧐

You talkin bout a coffee milkshake?

OMG a Cool Uncle Marisa shout out! THATS MY RUclipsR!!!!
The most comfortable way to play a GBA is with the original wide form factor. Good membrane buttons, comfortable form factor, heck yeah!
My dad smashed mine with a hammer😢
The most comfortable way is to use a PS2 controller hooked to a computer 😆

Ah, addressing my question right away, the comfort. Thanks to these guys for pushing the mod scene forward but no thanks lol

Agreed

" You want hand cramps? That is what the Gacha SP is for"
ah yes, the gameboy super pocketable.
Still less pocketable than a GB Micro though.
The crooked screen drove me insane😭
Pretty crazy because I’ve just been looking up GBA mods over the past few days

this mod looks more like a bragging rights kinda build rather than an actually practical mod
Actually, the first thing I thought about was that the bezel isn't completely lined up and its driving me crazy.
Honestly, this plus a flash cart would be sick to carry around
For a second, I thought that Dune coffee was gonna have hints of Spice from Arrakis
this looks a oddly big gameboy micro
Imagine if the controls were on the top of the screen

Looks so good, hope it get's better. Love the SP so much.
The more I think about it, "Wulff Den" sounds like a dope name for a coffee shop
Bro this is the EXACT experience I had with the boxy pixel metal hinged sp, minus the buttons lol

it's pretty basic soldering
love these "learning process" videos!
Great video!!
Looks like the most uncomfortable form factor possible.

what are you talking about, the thing looks beautiful!

With the new files and thinner wires it’s a lot easier to close the whole console. The form factor is unique, you like it or hate it..
This is neat, but ugh, you pry could have just gotten yourself a used GBA micro.
That intro hits with headphones on
This LOOKS absolutely amazing, unfortunately I'm wayy to scared to try something like it

so it's the size of an SP without any of the comfort of screen protection of the original? what's the point other than a nice looking shelf piece?

yes yes mods mods gba gba yada yada, but can we talk about the atrocity that bob called "coffee" ?
