I just wanted to post a positive comment on The Tube Depot and Rob in particular. I live in Hong Kong and am having a problem with a (what we think is a microphonic tube) on my Blackstar amp. I called them and Rob was more than helpful and genuinely interested in what my issues were. He was extremely nice and he helped me troubleshoot my amp over the phone. I just wanted to say that I highly recommend them and I will only order my tubes from them in the future. Thanks again Rob.
I don't know, any videos about electronics related to tube amps, tubes, guitar electronics, speakers, problems with them, etc. I have to say that I have learnt a lot with you guys. Thanks for everything and greetings from Spain.
I am a mechanic so i understand maintenance but this is the second Fender amp that i have bought new that had non tube related problems. The Super Champ XD (has less than 1 hr use) has been in the shop under warranty for over a month. I called yesterday and they haven't touched it yet. They say they think it is tube related. But i swapped in new good tested tubes and it didnt solve the problem. I put the old tubes back in before sending it in. Fender has had channel switching problems.
Sounds as if the tube itself is resonating at that particular frequency and the vibrations are being transferred into the circuit as an electric version of it. So, can you take a rubber band or similar and just put it around the tube to deaden it (basically, not allowing it to vibrate freely)? Or is it a vibration INSIDE the tube?
Your welcome for the comment. Now I have a question of my own. I recently acquired a 67/68 Bassman with the much maligned AB165 circuit. When I got it, the previous owner told me it was crapping out on him. Turns out one of the series diodes was burnt open (so it was acting as a half-wave rectifier only). I fixed that and recapped it with TVA blue body caps (my favorite). I played bass through it into a 8 ohm JBL (E140) and it sounded good except for some 60 cycle hum. After
I had this problem with a microphonic tube and then the glow and crackle. It was a bad 12AT7 phase inverter. The Vibrolux Reverb is back to her old self, and still has STR 387s. A certain tech who shall remain nameless said it was all kinds of expensive things requiring new sockets. this that and the other. I found 4 untested used Mullard UK made ECC81s 3 tested new, and dropped the one testing used in the amp and its been great. It has an old EI in the PI socket, so it eats PIs.. Many amps do.
Thank you for this video, the same thing just started happening on my Fender Champ that I bought used 4 months ago. Who knows the history of the NOS tubes that were in it (the tubes are from the 60s and the amp is a modern reissue). Sounds like I need to replace the tubes. Funny thing is it didn't start happening until I bought a Boost pedal a few weeks ago and is worse when using the Boost pedal than without.
Hi, Iv'e got a similar problem, whenever I play an E-note with any of my guitar, I get a tingeling high piched glassy sound thats enough loud for me to get annoyed, almost like an old modem. I've recently changed (Fender Champ 600, 12AX7A/ 6V6 GT) to Tube Amp Doctor tubes. I bought it second hand and the old ones were so bad they occasionally made the amp scream very loud. Thank you for the demonstration, I thought my problem was microphonics.
Just purchased a pair of Siemens CCA 1962 "gems" off eBay. One is so microphonic simply tapping on the console causes it to ring and oscillate through the speakers. Note speaker sensitivity is 103dB. Fortunately, and without any seller complaints the return process is proceeding without delay.
Presumably if the same thing happens to a power tube you just replace the bad one. After the gig would you recommend installing a whole new quad of power tubes? I suppose that is the only sensible option.
Great video Rob - amusing and informative stuff! And a great example of a microphonic tube. If this happens during a live show - what do you do? Close the amp down immediately or front it out - I fear the latter can't be good for anything, so I suppose the maxim is always have a back up when you are playing thru a tube amp!
Sorry, you missunderstood me, it's a current problem. I don't know if it was the same before I changed the tubes, then there were all kinds of noises, but afterwards with the TAD's I began to notice it, and it has got worse. The logisticts is crap here, had to wait 6 weeks for the tubes, I only ordered TAD's to be sure I would have no problems. Thanks.
Seems as though a combo amp with the speaker inside making all kinds rattiling and vibrations would be a tubes worse enemy. How easy is it for a tube to go severely microphonic? Are tubes that sensitive?
Just picked up a Fender Super Champ XD, and it's really great sounding...BUT when I either hit a higher string there's like a bell ringing type of sound that carries like crazy. It's not loud enough to quit playing, but it really affects the entire sound of the music. Any idea on what this could be?
Blake Wright Hi, I am having this exact problem with the same amp! Did you ever figure out what was going on? I hear this annoying whistling sound when I play certain notes.
ok,thnxs a lot. so, does keeping that wire soldered get any amps to become more stable, right? it's a matter of avoiding larsen effect and improve relation between amp and speaker cones, right?
I sent the amp back for exchange. But i have read about a few people having problems like this with the Fender Reissue amps and was wondering if it had to do with cheap components on the board (cap)? After all these years i would think that they would have this down to a science. Cutting corners and using cheap components will end up cutting your throat in the end.
great video my man. i've got a '65 deluxe reverb reissue and it was the demo at a national chain.i've been super pumped and pleased with the tone and the performance. however, the past 3 three shows i've played, about an hour into the set, i'll strike a hard note and instead of the humming/whirring that's happening here, it's a violent/non-healthy sounding screech that won't subside until the power is killed.i'm trying to replicate it by tapping all of the tubes, but can't make it happen... ???
@TubeDepotTV Thanks for the response! And I watched your 2nd video and I don't think my tube makes that exact sound nor like the sound from the first video (i think I have one preamp tube rattling and one power tube rattling) but they both rattle recently it has shown up more violently. When I tap the tubes when the amp isn't on one of the power tubes makes weird.
@TubeDepotTV Thanks :) I Took all tubes out because removing dust and putted them back in. They worked without the microphonic sound. But now i have a other strange problem. My V8 power tube "last one" is glowing blue sometimes and crackling noises come out the speakers. When i turn the amp off and on its working without problems. I think it needs a biasing process or is it just a old tube? Anyways watched all your video's and ive learned a lot from them :D
I have a Bugera V22 that I swapped all tubes out and at higher volumes I get this rattle noise. Its excessive on certain notes. Do tubes make this noise from my speakers bass hitting the tubes and causing a rattling/oscillating sound?
is it a good idea get to modifieing a vintage amp replaceing its own volume pot w/ a push-pull new one in order to have either soldered wire solution or unsoldered wire one? (..or is it just a lack of time?)
I just got a Deluxe Reverb and if I turn the reverb past 3 or 4, it starts humming just like that. So is the tube the problem? Funny thing is I tried a bunch of Twins and another Deluxe at the store (GC) and they all did the same thing once you turned the reverb up…..
I have begun to hear some rattling coming from one of my Power Tubes on my Fender Super Reverb '65 Reissue. Is this is a sign of the tube have gone bad? it doesn't sound like what your "microphonic" tube sounds but it only makes a rattle when I play some low notes and I identified pretty much which tube it is that rattle. Could it be something else has gone wrong?
what about negative feedback or positive one and what about get to unsoldering that wire linking phase inverter tube to outpt section in order to get more gain inside a tube guitar amp?
I got a Fender Deluxe Reverb and if I turn up the reverb past 3 it gets feedback that gets louder and louder until I shut the reverb off. I have since exchanged it and got a new DRRI and the same thing happened. Is that a microphonic tube issue?
i understand. well, what old famous amps w/o negative feedback (w/o that wire) were exist in '50s-'60s-'70s? what about early jtm45s or vox or fenders tweed for example? had they all a negative feedback?
I just got a brand new EH preamp tube to change on my Hot rod III, cause I dont like the one 12 ax7...its a little loud, so I put the new one and its ringing like crazy, I just connect the cable to the amp and it makes a microphonic noise, I got to check witht the store who sold me that tube....
I just bought a 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue. It is a quiet amp that sounds good. But when i turn up the reverb it hums. And gets louder as i turn up the reverb. No hum when reverb is off. Could this be V2 or V3 tube causing this? Or...? Thanks.
sorry the problem is with the pre-amp valve not el84....anyhow, if i turn the gain past 6 oclock is squeals like a pig and the amp is microphonic along with the v3 tube(guitar doesnt have to be plugged in).like i said i have replaced that valve and i re-valved the whole amp and problem still there....its a mesa boogie f30
Lots of great videos from you guys. My Blackstar Stage 60 is exhibiting some strange wind/howling background noise when only particular notes are being played, on all three channels. Changed out the speakers but same noise persisted. when I plug it into my halfstack cab and disconnect the 2 speakers in the combo, everything seems to be ok. I dont know if it's the power or preamp tubes. Vibration of the combo is obviously shaking something up. What do you guys think? I've only got the dough to replace either power or pre amp tubes for now. Thanks.
sounds very much like a microphonic tube ... cannot tell if it is preamp or power tube. Since it appears on all three channels, I would suspect the power tubes. Remove all of the preamp tubes and turn the amp on as if you were going to play. Then lightly tap on the power tubes. If you hear a rattling through the speakers, then the power tubes need replacing.
@TubeDepotTV i have tried 3 new preamap valves in there, a mesa boogie one, a jj valve and a marshall preamp valve, all were new but the problem still remains, i even changed the whole set inc. el84s...i had it looked at by a mp tech and he couldnt find the problem, i phoned mesa up also and they were like "if its not the preamp valve then they wernt sure"...its really frustrating
I just bought my first tube amp. A Bad Cat Classic Cat....I ordered it online through a dealer and I'm having issues already. When it's on standby, there's no hiss/crackle but once the amp is on there's this slight hiss/sporadic crackle in the background. When I'm playing you can't notice it, but as I turn up the volume/tone knobs you can. The background hiss/crackle gets louder with volume. I am experiencing some rattling on certain notes too(a new symptom) joy. Could this be a bad preamp tube?
I started to notice a harshness to notes up in the higher registers and a slightly raspy sound on solos and a slight bell like ring when I did palm mutes with a long pause between chords (high gain), so I did the tap test, and I find it hard to tell the difference, and it also depended on how hard I taped, I identified at least one power tube, not sure on the preamp tubes, I realize that even a tube thats only slightly bad can have a dramatic effect on tone and sound. my amp has not been moved roughly, but I have put about a 1000hrs of use on it in about 3 months, I'm going to do the power tubes first then the preamp next month if this doesn't go away, my amp is totally quite even when cranked on 10 doing this test with just the normal shhhhhhh...sound. any advice? thanks in advance
I have an ENGL Savage 120 but sometimes when i stop playing he makes some windy sounds and beeping like this on the video. So that also means 1 of my pre amp tube needs replacement? Because when i hit on the amp it stops sometimes :P
about 10 minutes of playing I hear a tone like a siren and shut the amp off. I was facing the power tubes and did not see them cherry bomb. Can you describe what a microphone power tube might sound like? The other issue was that the pins on the octal socket were loosey goosey so I may have lost contact with one of the pins in a power tube. (Maybe the grid voltage for an instant). Hope nothing is fried. Thanks for all the help
Tubes can go microphonic over time, but usually after warming up for a while. Sounds like yours are going that way. If you don't like it, just change the tubes out. Some people actually look for it though.
I can see the logic in that, maybe swop the lean and phase inverter 12AX7 if the clean blows; what if it's ap oweer tube? Just replace the bad tube, I spose. And then relace thel ot with a matched quad?
hi, when i tap one of my valves its microphonic, and also the whole amp becomes microphonic too, only when the gain is past 6 o clock..i have tried 3 new valves (el84s) on the problem valve but i still have the problem...help?
I pulled the tubes and put them back in then it seems that after I had the amp on for a while and the tubes were hot the crackling wasn't there anymore
So I thought some of my tubes went microphonic but it didnt sound like feedback at all...more like the guitar tone is fucked up, the highs are very high and without any body or shape. I looked at the tubs but they seem ok, the light isnt red but in a couple of them its kinda softer than the others...am I running out of tubes or what?
my tubes look to be in great condition and when I tap them it does cause the feed back as portrayed in this video but I get the cracking noise on the cleaner channels. Any idea what that might be?
I admire your enthusiasm, but that humming sounds like feedback, and it is not all that nice if it stays at that pitch regardless of the input signal. But, if that humming becomes like some sort of harmonic of the input signal, then I will change my tune. Currently, I am not convinced I like a microphonic tube.
Microphonics don't always sound like that. All tubes have a frequency to their microphonics(if they even have them). Some are higher frequency than others :P
Cool so I guess this means my amp isn't microphonic. It makes a noise higher pitched than that when you tap on the amp itself, but stops. It doesn't generate it's own sound.
and yes....I should be burned at the stake for running a 8 ohm load on this amp. I know it wants to see 4. However, I was always told that the 100% mismatch (8 on 4, 16 on an 8) etc. was ok. Heck Fender had parallel inputs for speaker jacks. Any additional speaker plugged into a fender would mismatch the load as they didn't use multi ohm tapped OTs...

Well, is the microphonic tube any different than a normal vacuum tube? And if so, what is the difference? So what does it do other than a nornal tube?

Is there a suggested level for the Pre and Post volume knobs when conducting this tap test?
I just bought my first tube amp. A Bad Cat Classic Cat....I ordered it online through a dealer and I'm having issues already. Wonder if it's possible to tune the frequency of a microphonic tube.
Would make for a bonkers 32 channel analogue synth.

ya what the video said dumby
That was wonderfully ironic.
more videos please
Thank you! The answer to my question :)
this is happening to my Bogner Uberschall amp after 15 months unfortunately
thanks a lot indeed!
ok, i understand. thanks very a lot friend

Hey was the guitar plugged in when you hit the preamp tube
i've got a microphonic EF86 in my radio
Don't worry: you will never get any microphonic effect without orange wood stick!
Ohm my gosh you should try this application! Spot androidcircuitsolver on google!
Microphonics don't always sound like that. All tubes have a frequency to their microphonics(if they even have them). Some are higher frequency than others :P
Cool so I guess this means my amp isn't microphonic. It makes a noise higher pitched than that when you tap on the amp itself, but stops. It doesn't generate it's own sound.
wait... not all tubes are microphonic? uh oh
You can install a cable there and lead it to an expression pedal so you can you it as a new effect the ooooooooo lol
and yes....I should be burned at the stake for running a 8 ohm load on this amp.
Well, what does it do?!
Hmmm... this is what my Vox AC15 is doing.
