    100% agree Matthew. Every day I enjoy sitting down with either an old hymnal or the Psalter to pray. The beauty of it is that I know I’m not going to wake up some day and find that all the words inside were changed or deleted to fit whatever crazy mood society is in.

    I always prefer physical copies of the Bible and related Holy books instead of digital copies. The wear shows character in study, your mind/muscle memory recognizes where in a book a beloved passage is with use, and an update from a bad actor won't change the meaning/use of words like they can do on digital platforms.
    Edit: I meant to add, I've found that as you grow more mature in the Word and the actual meaning of passages, some old-time hymns/songs no longer fit unless you change the words. One that comes to mine is: "Build My Mansion"

    I grew up in legalistic pentecostal churches where they only sang whatever their favorite artists came out with at the time. Worship was synonymous with emotion there. I was always a black sheep, never included or acknowledged. I never had a charismatic experience and I thank God for it. Im now in a reformed baptist church and the hymns are just amazing and God exalting. True praise. About God not us. I had to get myself a copy and its so sad to think of all I’ve missed out on. But now I can share in centuries of worship. Brothers, please pray for me. My wife refuses to acknowledge the truth I present to her. She has not followed me to the church I am in but stayed in the pentecostal church i had to leave. They do not preach the bible there and teach all sorts of errors, and acknowledge false prophets over scripture. Their “prophets” literally prophesy things that go against the clear teaching of scripture but they are accepted as true even by the people that know those “prophets” do not have fruit but exhibit all the fruit of the flesh. Please pray that my wife’s eyes will be opened and that she will submit to God and then as a wife and follow me.

    I recently attended a worship service complete with smoke machine and throbbing lights. As I'd never heard the songs before, I glanced around to see if any men were singing. They were not - in fact they were staring stoically ahead. I realized that 1) they also didn't know the song, 2) the song was pitched far too high for them, and 3) the melodies had too many triplets or other vocal pyrotechnics for them to duplicate. Why, oh why??

    Yes, please donate your old church hymnals to others! The group of college students at my church and I were able to get around twelve used trinity reds at a Presbytery. Through us the books had a second life and we would sing with them together as a group frequently (I since picked up a used copy of the Trinity Psalter hymnal and also have enjoyed that too)
    I grew up with contemporary music and so when I became Presbyterian, I considered hymns a necessary con for listening to good theology. When I realized the priority of solid lyrics and the focus on worshipping God rather than jamming out for ourselves, it clicked for me. I genuinely enjoy hymns over contemporary music now.

    I love the thought put into this. My only disagreement would be that we should be an old worn Psalter people. The only difference between hymns and the new additions of songs are their age. Whether they have been sung for generations doesn't matter as much as whether or not they were written by the Lord for His people. I know we are in agreement with what I have heard you say in the past. Let's be a Psalm singing people!

  • @TheDCinSC

    Agreed. I grew up in the old Southern Presbyterian Church and the old red The Hymnbook still has sentimental value for me. Both Trinity Hymnals are sound as well. When I became an Anglican via the Reformed Episcopal Church the old Book of Common Praise was pretty dreadful but thankfully it was replaced with an outstanding update in 2017 that is the finest hymnal for traditional Anglicans of which I'm aware. My own parish uses the 1940 hymnal but I suspect we will be transitioning to the newer Book of Common Praise at some point.
    Most everything you right about hymnals also goes for Prayer Books and the like -- you can project it on a screen and you can read it on your phone or tablet (and I have apps for that and the Bible for convenience), but it's not the same as holding the book in your hand.
    Well said.

    • @love.one.another
      @love.one.another 2 года назад

      @@alephnaught8343 I don't see one way of worshiping God is inferior to another. I would think God would want all worship in every language, form, etc. The Bible talks about the sky worshipping God and the oceans. They don't have a hymnal. I think it's personal preference. A hymnal is the best way for certain people to worship and maybe Ozzy Osbourne would want to worship God through rock music. I don't know, he may prefer a hymnal. There is heavy metal and there is classical and the reason is personal preference. It doesn't mean one is inferior to the other. Some people won't listen to a Bach concerto because they can't relate to it whatsoever and others can relate to a song by The Clash for example. Each person is made in the image of God and each have their own experience of what it means to worship. If you prefer a 1611 hymnal, great, if you prefer worshipping from home, great but to say one way of worshipping is inferior to another I don't get. When the woman poured the perfume on Jesus, a lot of people thought that was inferior as well. Maybe she should have used a 1611 hymnal, but that didn't exist yet. Times have changed and technology is a big part of the century. Technology is here whether we like it or not. Times change and that's ok. The same argument is the KJVO argument. Some say we shouldn't have modern translations, that they are inferior to the 1611 KJV. Some prefer a modern translation. It comes down to preference.

    I love hymns, I have several hymnals in my music library I enjoy playing piano and singing from in my devo time, but as I can see from my profile pic yes I lead worship at a contemporary church.
    I can hardly stand how 80% of what we do is bethel Hillsong or elevation of which I have no say. We include ONE hymn per week required by our main church campus’s worship pastor. (We have 18 campuses across our state).
    I find value and can worship to contemporary worship, then again there are few songs that are as theological rich. Leading worship from our viewpoint is sometimes discouraging for lack of audience/congregation participation. But in our community here in the “Bible belt” so many have been given up in church and it feels kind a consumerist culture these days in the church world just to keep people coming it’s sad. I’m getting burnt out on the contemporary non-denom church world but don’t think I fit in any particular denomination so I just keep on serving where I’m at.

    "...one's own experience of things spiritual...". Maybe I misunderstood that part of your comment. Definitely, if somebody has an spiritual experience that is not in harmony with scripture, yes, that is dangerous. We mustn't rely on feelings and emotions. However, I do believe there is a danger, when the church focuses on indoctrination of a individual and not on ministering and helping someone have a personal experience with Christ.
    I grew up Non-practicing Catholic and with a learning disability. Soon after I was introduced to the bible, I was quickly ushered into the Do's and Don't's. I didn't even know what the bible references were for or how to study the Bible. There was also a lot of turmoil in the church about music and worship. Eventually my life became about being ready for the 2nd coming. Now, I don't go to church and have a difficult time with my perseption of God. Intellectually I don't think God is a taskmaster, but with all the heavy meat I was fed; why can't people learn at a good and understandable pace? Sometimes I think the church can get in the way and ruin people's lives.
