They need to stop handing out CDL's after 4 weeks of training. This is a prime example.
Mate get a grip, you can do a truck licence in the UK in a day if you wanted to and we have some of the best truck drivers on the planet... Retards will be retards. No matter how long you train them.
You need to worry bout urself
Amen 👍👍
@@Spunksock the problem is in America the standard driving test is laughable and I would say they have some of the worst in the western world. So yeah they do need more training plus they need to limit the truck speeds like they do in the UK
@@mrjamesmay3548 most trucks are speed limited here too but that doesn't stop the truck from gaining speed due to a steep grade
as a professional driver, the lack of training/common sense this guy displayed sickens me. for anyone out there whether you drive a semi, a straight truck, a car or a freaking bicycle, here is what you do, in the correct order, if your brakes ever fail while going down a grade(if you use them properly they should not fail to begin with but that is another story)
1- hit the runaway ramp, if a grade as one (or many) it will be announced at the top of said grade)
2- go into a ditch, preferably one where you can see grass growing since grass grows much easier on unpacked dirt, your truck will sink into the dirt slowing it down quickly (pretty much the same effect as a runaway ramp)
3- no ramps, no safe ditch? this one is dangerous, but its MUCH better than slamming into traffic, blast your horn until everyone else around you on the highway realizes what going on and move away from you, then give a hard yank of the wheel to the left than a even harder one to the right. this will put your truck on its passenger side, its far from ideal and very risky only do that if you exhausted all other option and you are 100 % you wont hit anyone when you flip the truck on its side
sorry for the long winded post, but if it saves even 1 life someday its worth it
He was under trained and once lost control reached a point he didn't know what to do
Your message is clear and not long winded.
You forgot one ! How about moving over to the edge of the road.and shuting.down the rig.and go into the ditch if you.can.if not the weight of the truck would.slow it down ! Just shut down and move.over ! The truck cant run if its turned off!
@@jackiecaldwell6898 it will actually keep on going because of engine compression iif it in gear... if it isnt... well shutting it down wont slow you down
You also forgot, switching in to the lowest possible gear (if applicable), hitting the engine brake switch (if applicable), and slowly pulling the emergency brake.
I just drove down this road on my third trip solo 24 years old but my dads a trucker and he’s always told me that you need to respect any downgrade. It was a very humbling experience

From what he said , his brakes failed. Which means that what you just suggest was impossible for him to pull off. So would that change your opinion on the situation.

This is what the runaway truck Ramps are designed for… tough break
Anything to avoid hitting innocent people at a dead stop or driving next to him. Seems that empathetic part of his brain is non-existent and he's a real danger in society if that's his way of thinking.
Other truckers say they would of ditched it. Or taking the ramp
terrible idea. They teach you not to do that in CDL class. Your load could tip, spill, and kill more people in the accident. You could jack knife and take out more than one lane of traffic. You could hit someone in your blindspot causing you to take out more than one lane of traffic. The safest move is to just hit the cars directly in front of you. That sounds bad, but that's the truth. He actually followed his training on that part of the accident.
@@billkramer1853 the ramp was the best option. He probably panicked. Downhill with all that weight. I've seen people lose it on flat surfaces.
@@jameslockwood9444 and now he will spend whole life behind the bars thanks to that "safest move" . What a joke.
"If he saw that (ramp) and they can prove that" I would think it is irrelevant to need to prove that he saw the ramp. All drivers have an obligation to pay attention on the road. It doesn't have to be proven whether or not you saw a stop sign you ran, you are automatically held responsible for running it. This is no different. Signs were posted, he has the obligation to see them and follow them accordingly.
It doesn't matter if he lost control or brakes failed - things like this happen in the mountains and that's why they have these ramps, so they can be used in these situations. The fact is he didn't drive responsibly and caused this crash. Also, in light of recent news, if we're saying he was so young and that's a justification for not holding him fully responsible, then we need to be reconsidering what age we give out driver licenses of any type. But, as it stands, he was legally old enough to have this responsibility and he made the decision to take that on, consequences and all.
Best coment
Of all the comments I have read from countless videos regarding this crash, this is the best breakdown
I don’t think semi’s with brake malfunctions is quite the same thing as a driver’s “obligation to pay attention to the road”.
There is obviously a lot of money spent on constructing the runaway ramps to help give them options in those situations and make the roads safer for other drivers.
It seems obvious that being able to prove that the driver clearly had opportunities to use these ramps is undeniably relevant..
Most people aren't saying he shouldn't be held accountable, they're saying the punishment is cruel and unusual (against the Constitution), and does NOT fit the crime. 110 years is insane. When there are cases of people that have intentionally murdered or rape that have received half, even a quarter of those years, makes it even more ridiculous.
@JasonEyestone agreed. Anyone saying different is ignorant. Brake failures happen. It absolutely matters if the driver had an opportunity to safely stop at a runaway ramp. If there was not a runaway ramp, that's one thing, but the fact he passed on, changes everything charge wise
Why is that run away ramp on that crazy freaking curve though… a truck going fast enough likely can’t even make that curve in the first place and go straight off the mountain. Jeez. I feel for this guy.
The ramp is less than a curve than the hard left he made. It’s easy to use that ramp🙂
You don't know what you are talking about. It's I 70, It's steep mountain curves. The driver could have taken either ramp. He will NOT go flying off the mountain, these ramps are designed to stop an 80000 lb out of control truck doing a 100 mph. I have driven semis for a long time and have been through there more than once. I dont know why he chose not to use the ramp, I have heard he was very inexperienced and probably not mountain trained. In my opinion the company that sent him that route is just as responsible. My last company wouldn't let you drive in the mountains until you were mountain trained. When you start having brake fade in a semi you are almost out of time for stopping.
idrather die than take 4 other peoples lives. i would at least die trying to stop rather thant keep driving. if it killed me than take their lives thats the better outcome just my opinion.
Right! That is exactly what I saw as well. Just like he drifted to the left toward the inside of the curve so he wouldn't flip the trailer going around the corner.
@@brianenglund1413 its doesn't matter take he chose his life over the chance of killing other people. If you die that's the choice you made when you chose the job of a professional driver in my opinion. He had 2 clear chances to take runaways and chose not to so.what do you say to that if the first one was not OK then what about the second? Why not take it in to the overpass instead of in the back of traffic?
Race to the bottom. Some operator hired a 23-year-old greenhorn to drive in the Rockies. I've been more careful cycling in the mountains than this dude. I can't think of the horrible deaths that he meted out to unsuspecting people and the heartbreak for their families. I would have sacrificed myself off the ramp or cliff to avoid those consequences and that of sitting in jail for forty years.

I mean it was kind of annoying at one point maybe it’s just me but I knew damn well not to take any type of otr job for this exact same reason this isn’t a game, I decided to look and look and finally landed a job locally, I honestly HATE to say this I really really do because I don’t ever want to knock someone for trying to succeed in life but I do have to agree No English No CDL; maybe that’s a long shot but at the same time AT least know how to read every and all signs that pertain to you as a driver everything is possible even learning English.

Wayne Mcneal I agree I have been in the trucking industry over 30 years as a driver owner operator and broker people say well he should’ve used the runaway ramps well first he was young and didn’t know what he was doing and second he’s behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound vehicle and scared to death he might’ve not even seen those runway ramps he was so focused on probably trying to get it to stop or slow down or whatever that he didn’t even see that was ramps to take. He never should’ve been on the mountain to begin with I’m not making excuses for him and I’m not saying he shouldn’t be at fault I’m just saying those who are giving their opinion and they weren’t there they don’t know the situation he was in there just go about with the saw in the video
Is the company's fault. Not the driver.
Michel Medina I agree
That's a fact
Hope they get their asses sued accordingly. That goes to show they care nothing about their employees either
He had many chances to try to stop, but he only chose to save himself
Or he was panicking and just paying attention to other vehicles and missed the truck ramp as a result.
What do you mean save himself?
Taking a runaway truck ramp(deep, soft gravel for a long stretch, with an ending of soft water filled barrels), is very safe.
I've seen these ramps used before by very big heavy trucks. Always stops the truck. And at most the truck takes cosmetic damage from the gravel.
Him ignoring the runaway truck ramp was not to "save himself". It was an intentionally negligent act, because probably thought he could slow down and get brakes back before hitting the I-70 traffic jam entering denver.

It seems like a tough ramp to go into at his speed. It curves sharply with the road
There are very important rules to fallow when you are driving an eighteen wheeler. Number one be aware of the level of dangerousness in cases like this, for example weigh of the load because the more weigh more difficult is to stop the truck and his truck was very heavy. Number two when you are going down a hill like this you have to keep the full control of the truck speed, How? reduce speed before going down the hill lowering your gear to the point that the engine of the truck won't let the truck speed up more than a safe speed and He did not do that.and that is the reason why he lost the control of the truck, When you fallow that rule you never ever loose the control of your truck speed and you barely use your brakes.A real truck driver never rely on a truck brakes specially going down a hill because when you over use them like he did you are going to loose them.I agree that 110 years is excessive but don't feel bad if he gets between 25 and 30 years because this was a preventable accident.

Another concern is... what are the drivers around the truck thinking by staying anywhere near that situation while it was unfolding? If you see someone who's speeding uncontrollably or swerving erratically on the highway, take your foot off the gas and fall back and/ or speed up so you're not right next to that vehicle. Always put as much distance between yourself and whatever dangerous driving you notice as possible. Don't cause an accident by slamming on the brakes, but for heaven's sake, don't try to drive close to that person. It is not the time for reacting aggressively and trying to speed up along the shoulder to pass the erratic vehicle.
Engine breaking is helpful, but what is legal is to come down in the same gear you would climb it in. Set your safe speed (45 is what is posted up from 35 only a year ago) and stab break it allowing time for the breaks to cool. 46-47 stab to 42. Never ever pull it out of gear.
But ya, jake brakes are not what you rely on.
You'd be crazy not to use your Jake brakes along with stab braking.
You don't stab brake.. all you are doing is fanning them and making them hot... you come down in a gear low enough so the Jake brake does all the work... if you have to constantly apply brake coming down the hill whether you stab them or drag them YOU ARE IN TOO HIGH A GEAR... BRAKES ARE FIT STOPPING ... NOT FOR WEARING OUT AND HEATING UP COMING DOWN A GRADE. THE FUCKING JAKE BRAKE WAS INVENTED BY A TRUCKER SO YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO RELY ON YOUR SERVICE BRAKES... USE THE FUCKING THING THE WAY IT WAS MENT TO BE USED... AND IT'S GOT THREE STAGES SO IF THE HILL LEVELS OUT A LITTLE DON'T SHIFT UP JUST GO TO ANOTHER STAGE OF THE JAKE.... RULE OF THUMB WAS ALWAYS GO DOWN A HILL IN A LOWER GEAR THEN YOU WENT UP IT .. IF YOU TOPPED IN 8 YOU WENT DOWN IN 7 AND SO ON....I SELDOM TOUCH MY BRAKES GOING DOWN A GRADE I LET THE JAKE DO THE WORK AND TAKE MY TIME ... THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOING DOWN A HILL AT 35 INSTEAD OF 45 OR 50 IS ABOUT A MINUTE... IF YOU WANT TO TELL ME YOU CAN'T MAKE THAT UP OUT IN THE FLATS OR YOUR THAT PRESSED FOR TIME YOU'RE FULL OF SHIT... THERE'S ALWAYS ASSHOLES MOSTLY LOCAL DENVER AND COLORADO BASED COMPANIES THAT FLY DOWN THAT HILL IGNORING ALL THE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS I SEE THEM EVERYTIME OUT THERE AND MOST OF THEM ARE ROCK BOXES AND GROCERY CHAIN TRUCKS. HIGHWAY PATROL NEEDS TO BE OUT THERE MORE !!!

He will live with this for the rest of his life. As a CDL driver myself I feel for him. I don’t excuse him. But I have compassion for him. He didn’t take the truck ramp. He likely panicked and didn’t even see it. It’s so easy to judge when in your homes watching these videos. There were a number of times he could /should have heeded to the warnings he was fading out his brakes. But inexperienced as he was he missed them. He doesn’t deserve 110 yrs and he treated as someone who intentionally kills or rapes. God have mercy on his sole and be with the family’s involved in this crash.
I totally agree. In that position this guy was probably focusing on staying on the road and avoiding people i doubt he saw a single sign going down that hill.
Please educate me on possible speed reduction options, was downshifting and getting to a lower gear not an option even if you ruin the gearbox/transmission with abrupt down shift’s, he couldn’t get it to 1st gear??
I’m honestly not entirely sure but i would assume the engine would just kill it self being dropped into such a low gear at high speeds, because the weight and momentum isn’t gonna magically disappear when u hit first you know? Just gonna rev to the moon and keep going with some more resistance now but still moving forsure
The speed limit in that area for a loaded truck is 35, at that speed a truck can use Jake brakes to maintain that speed without using much, if any braking.
Too much braking gets them hot and then you have zero brakes. No way to slow down at that point
Slim to no chance of getting it to go into a lower gear after a certain point going downhill. That's why you downshift before heading downhill. After you take it out of gear trying to downshift and miss the gear, you most likely won't be able to get it into any gear after that and the ramp is the only option left. But even if you leave it in gear, if you aren't in the lower gear necessary to keep your speed down, your brakes will overheat and fade leaving the ramp the only option still. Lower gears and Jake brakes are musts for safe mountain descents
Using proper gears and jakes will keep you from having to use your brakes much, if at all
Truck transmissions use straight cut ⚙ that when you try to downshift from higher speeds can and will either 1) destroy the trans if you miss a gear and go too low of a gear or 2) blow the pistons through the top of the engine by trying to jam it in to low range 1st gear. It makes for a bad day either way
But i dont see smoke coming from trailer axles!!!
Split second decisions and panic, is why he didn't use the ramp, probably panicked and never looked at the sign. I have gone on that stretch of road and its very dangerous to begin with especially for an inexperienced driver.
His statement said he couldn't read English and he was never taught or told about the runaway truck ramp

So..how do you practice for these situations as a cdl driver??
You don't... You can't practice for this.
You just have to be trained properly and have the knowledge and the ability to apply your acquired skillset to overcome these situations.
First of all, PRE-TRIP your truck.. Inpsect the brakes!

Do the prosecutors think he was lying and was actually tired/distracted/drunk? Because that would make sense why they charged with such a hefty sentence. Plus I would’ve bet it would be hard to salvage the truck’s brakes and determine whether they had actually failed. Anyone else getting this idea?
As a trucker I’ve seen several trucks trying to slow down on a hill, and the brakes smoke a lot. There is no sign of smoke, and that truck in the video is going nearly the same speed as the other vehicles - too fast for fully loaded truck. No brake lights? No hazard flashers? There was the trailer tilting to much, indicating bad judgement and poor speed control. No signal on lane change, typically is distracted driving. Did they check if he was texting?
