Tipper I use canned Evaporated milk and butter in my mashed potatoes. Also save the potato water to mix with evaporated milk to make cream gravy-a trick I learned from my Cherokee grandmother in law.

I learned this recipe in the 60s in Ft. Wayne, IN from Victoria Miller, my Grandmother In Law. In the oven, pre crockpot age. She always served on mashed potatoes. It was a typical German descent or Amish farmers recipe for Sunday dinner. Viv used to even make an American Chop Suey with canned whole button mushrooms recipe and served on her creamiest mashed potatoes (one stick of real butter). Her favorite to serve was a beef roast in the same roasting pan with a pork loin roast. She always said their flavors came together perfectly. And her banana cream pie was always perfect. I was only 20 but her Sunday dinners were the best cooking lessons I ever had and I am 76 now.

Hi Tipper, that pork roast with the kraut looks and sounds so delicious. I cannot wait to try it. I'm with you on the mashed potatoes. I like mine really smooth and with milk, butter, salt, and pepper. I have tried them several other ways with sour cream, chives, cheese etc. but nothing beats just simple mashed potatoes in my opinion. I plan on ordering your cookbook in the near future. I'm looking forward to being able to look through it make some of your and Jim's delicious recipes.

Hi Tipper, Here's a potato peeling memory for you, brought back to me by your Pap's comment to you. My mother said that when she was a young girl, helping her grandmother peel potatoes, her grandmother would inspect the peels, and if there was too much potato left, Mom was required to peel the peels! The story always made me laugh, but it also made me imagine trying to actually do that. I'm sure Mom was using a paring knife! It also speaks to the importance of not wasting, especially to my great-Grandma's generation. They were certainly practical.

Tipper, My mom used to make pork and kraut. She always added peeled and cored apples to the pork and kraut and a little brown sugar. It helped take the edge off the sauerkraut. DELICIOUS!! She also made chunked butternut squash, apples and link sausage baked together with cinnamon, butter and brown sugar OMGOSH, IT IS SOOO GOOD!! The New Year tradition is to have Pork and sauerkraut as your dinner , New Years day. For health and property. Love you, your stories and ALL your videos 💕🙏🙏.

Love Kraut and pork or Kraut and sausage. Years ago my Wife made Kraut and pork, Now my Daughter makes it for me every-so-often. She slowly cooks it all day until it falls apart. I sometimes make Kraut and sausage for myself. I get the large Turkey sausages and cut them into sections and slowly cook them with Kraut. The smell of cooking Kraut is amazing and it is hard to wait to eat.

I kept waiting for a close up of that chess cake. My oldest sister was famous for her chess pie. Daddy love it. I loved seeing your family gathered at the table. It warms my heart and brings back fond memories of our family gatherings many years ago. Most of my siblings have passed along with Mom & Dad. I was the "baby" and just turned 75 last week. Mashed - or creamed potatoes absolutely have to be smooth. No lumps. I put up corn every year as well, filling the freezer to last all year. I'm a Georgia girl who turns 75 in June and I relate to "all" things homemade. I'm getting ready to can jelly before the weather turns too hot. Thanks for everything familiar in the kitchen.

My great grandma was German, and after the WWII she made kraut in a big wooden barrel. We also have a family recipe but we use a hock with the skin on and on top of the kraut not under, and we add a lot of sliced onions to the kraut as well as lots of black pepper and bay leaves and we bake it in the oven. It is my sister's favorite food (right after the wiener schnitzel). With the hock is looks so festive on the dining table and you can make it even fancier by smearing some honey on the skin so it gonna look shiny and crispy. I love this food so much! Thank you for sharing your version Tipper! God bless you and your family ❤

My Mama always browned her pork roast and cooked it on her stovetop in her well loved Presto pressure cooker. We didn't put kraut on ours in Arkansas, Haha, but she would make gravy from the liquid that cooked out of it, and it was so, so good, and great on mashed potatoes. It was one of my favorite memories of what she cooked. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. They are always enjoyable! Also, if I have it, I always use evaporated milk and butter in my mashed potatoes in place of regular milk. Fresh creamed corn from the garden is always wonderful. I will put butter and some evaporated milk in that, too. Keep sharing! Nancy from Arkansas

I really enjoy the stories you share, Tipper, and of course your meal preparation, it's much how my Grandma and Mom cooked here in the Midwest. I have a special memory of one of my grade school teachers who YEARS ago shared a story about meeting her future in laws for the first time. She said she was so nervous about it. Her fiance's mother was preparing the meal and she offered to help her by peeling the potatoes. While peeling them her future MIL told her " I think you are going to make an excellent wife, you neither peel skins too thick or too thin, so that tells me you won't be too stingy OR too wasteful" I have never forgotten that story and have always been mindful of that when preparing potatoes :)

In my house it takes 2 large bags of kraut. Everyone loves kraut.😅 I always do mine in the ovenso I can get the top brown and crispy. And the kraut gets some browning too. Mashed potatoes with cream and butter. Yum. Now you've got me hungry. 😂
As for peeling potatoes, my Dad always told me I cut off too much tater. A friend had an idea to see which of us could peel the thinnest and not break the peel from start to finish. Thats how I got good at peeling taters.😂

You always put together a good meal. My grandmother made her mashed potatoes similar to how you do. Almost every meal she served mashed potatoes as a side, we hardly ever make them nowadays but they are so delicious. She always had some sort of bread with the meal -- even if it was only toasted white bread with butter. Definitely, comfort food at your table.

I love sour kraut and smoked sausage cooked together. But I have to admit that your kraut and pork loin looks delicious. I'll try that soon because I can put it in the crock pot and itll be ready when i get home from work. Thank you so much for such a simple and delicious supper idea. Greetings from my home in North Mississippi.

Yum, I will be making that soon. My mom was German, so we grew up on pork roast. I like my mashed potatoes like you, except, I add a smidgen of sugar, and put some brown butter on top after I put in the serving bowl. I put some.sugar in my green beans and put brown butter in my green beans too. My mom always done that, so that is what I do. My family all loves green beans made like thay.

I put salt, milk and butter in my mashed potatoes too. Garden corn is my favorite too. Those are some of the prettiest apples I've seen in a long time. You've got a meal fit for a king!

When I still ate meat, whenever I'd have pork roast, I'd make braised red cabbage and apples, with some balsamic vinegar. Yummy over the mashed potatoes instead of gravy. then I'd mix the left over cabbage with the left over potatoes to make cabbage and tater cakes for future lunches or leftovers night. so good!

There is nothing like pork with sauerkraut and potatoes. One of my favorite dishes is potatoes and sauerkraut. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Wow! I can't wait to try your chest cake. I have tried many of a chess pie's, and we had wonderful pies. I've never tried a chess cake.

Been trying for 25 years to replicate Granny's super smooth mashed potatoes. All we know is she used at least a stick of butter and a can of Milnot. She used her Kitchenaid mixer too which tends to make gummy potatoes, but hers were always perfect. The corn was a specialty of my other grandmother. Her sister was married to a sweet corn farmer. Grandma always froze her corn in little plastic containers. I would hover around the pot of corn, picking out the big slices of kernels that hadn't separated. Those were my favorite. I have never found a commercially available corn that tastes as good as what my great uncle grew. My mom often made pork roast with sauerkraut. This meal brought up so many memories!

I LOVE mashed potatoes!!! I like them as you do, Tipper, nice and soft but not runny. Usually I whip them with butter and milk; but when I have extra energy and cream cheese available, I add some of that.

I am so glad I found you, as watching your presentations is wonderful, and makes me joyful. Also, it is a great escape from current life complications going on right now! God bless!

I just ordered your book on Amazon! I am so excited! It says it is coming tomorrow! A lot going on in my life in the last year and I didn't know you had a cookbook! My Great Grandmother and before her came from Southern Appalachia and her cookbooks seem to have "disappeared" after she passed so getting your book means a lot to me.

We do the same thing with crockpot pork but we set it on a layer of sliced onions and add apple cider vinegar instead of kraut. Easy and delicious.
