- Owner of LNER A4 60009 Union of South Africa John Cameron has decided after years of steaming around the Network in Britain to finally retire her . After years of filming 09 at various locations on the West Coast Mainline , The Settle & Carlisle Line and Beattock I put some of the more memorable videos I managed to capture .A massive thanks to all involved with 09 over the years especially John Cameron for making it possible.
Strangely it is the AUDIO that had me captivated. A really positive three cylinder beat with the engine working firmly. We had a few three cylinder engines patterned on Gresley's ideas but sadly they were all scrapped when I was too young to remember. This set of clips helps me to imagine hearing and seeing them go past. Anyway, a great set of shots. Very enjoyable.
What a super legendary locomotive surely missed on the main line forever
Hang on... is Union of South Africa... not going to run anymore? What is next for the A4 now? It’s too famous to be retired... and too valuable to sit idle... I hope it doesn’t share the same fate as some of it’s sisters like Merlin, Kestrel, Golden Eagle and Kingfisher which were scrapped in the 60’s during the Beeching Axe of those times
Wonderful compilation, thank you Steve. I started noting favourites but, as sometimes happens, I found I was noting every shot so stopped and just enjoyed them all! Kind regards, Bob.
Thank you Stephen, this a great tribute to a magnificent engine and Mr Cameroon for the pleasure he has shared so generously to all like myself who have been luck enough to travel behind her or see her pass by. I live close to Aberdeen and have been fortunate enough to travel from London to Aberdeen behind her, ok in stages.
Thanks Jenny , the A4 has certainly brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people so again a big thank you to Mr Cameron.
A fantastic tribute to the best A4. I have always had some storming runs behind this engine. John Cameron was President of the Scottish farmers union, and allegedly when some legislation came out with which he an his fellow farmers disagreed with, it was not unknown for him to take them out in a tractor and trailer on his farm, drive for miles to the root of the problem and tell them if they didn't agree to change the legislation or proposals, they were walking back. So using the same methods I wonder if this would work! "Mr Cameron, step into my car and let's discuss putting USA back on the mainline while on our way to John o' Groats!" Joking apart, I would like to say thanks to him for saving the engine in the first place and operating it for over 50 years.
Thanks for the kind comment and we all owe Mr Cameron a big thank you for all the years we have been able to see 09 👍
Superb compilation, Thank you for posting.
Thanks for the kind comment and it was my pleasure 👍
Jolly good video Steve. She’s a wonderful steam engine, I was lucky to see her back then, when I was at NRM in York with my dad, I saw her there, since it was mallards 75th anniversary of his speed record. Then I saw her again which is at Shildon and it was the final event for mallard, because Dwight D Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada is leaving Britain. Then a couple times at Wakefield and pontefract to do trains spotting with my dad and his friend. Then I got chance to ride on Union of South Africa with my cousin and a friend, it was at East Lancashire Railway. You know I wish I saw her at North Yorkshire Moors Railway last year, since it was the steam gala, but unfortunately I missed it because I wasn’t going out back then. Well that’s it then, I’m going to missed this steam loco, and it’s one of my favourite steam locomotives as well. I hope the best for Union of South Africa before she’s retired and going to be displayed in Scotland. Thanks for sharing this Steve. Stay safe and look after yourself. All the best ... Josh
Thanks Josh , pleased you have lots of good memories of 09 and like you say she will be sadly missed. Regards Steve
A very fitting tribute to one of the preservation greats and not forgetting the man who made it possible Mr John Cameron
Thanks Derek, yes we must be thankful that Mr Cameron blessed us with its presence on our metals.
Fabulous video Steve 🤓. No 9 will surely be missed. Excellent, well done 🤓. Stay safe.
Thanks Anthony, be sad to think we won’t see her again but plenty of fond memories.
Such a beautiful engine, I was lucky enough to see this loco in full sprint a few times going through Doncaster back in the 50s , and seeing at the time it was shedded at 61B which was Aberdeen ferryhill it was a rare event to see it so far south, it was serviced mainly at Doncaster works but usually left afterwards light engine.
Thanks Terry, I bet that was a great sight of her at full tilt doing what she was built to do . 👍
Beautiful & stunning Thanks
Thanks Alex , pleased you enjoyed the video 👍
Excellent tribute of the "Queen of steam" I to used to see a lot of her at St Margarets(64A) & Haymarket(64B) and on the mailine from the Waverley station along with a few others late 50's early 60's many thanks
Thanks Robert , pleased you enjoyed the video. Regards Steve
Terrific, absolutely terrific; thanks Steve, but above all, thank you John Cameron.
Thanks Alan, must admit I’ve been lucky to capture so many good shots of 09 over the years and like you say all down to Mr Cameron . Steve
I just thought I would say I managed to see Union of South Africa 60009 twice, the first time back in 2013 and six years later I saw it and got the video of it coming into Edinburgh last April.
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated 👍Steve
Superb footage of this wonderful engine Steve...she will be greatly missed.
Thanks Bob , must admit I’ve been lucky to get so many memorable shots of 09 . Regards Steve
Brilliant video Steve. Some great memories of a steam engine that will truly missed. Thanks for posting. Kind regards C&A
Thanks C&A, always struck me as a quiet engine but loads of fond memories of filming her 👍
Thank you for taking the time to post this. Brilliant!
Thanks Paul, pleased you enjoyed it 👍
Superb compilation and tribute to Union of South Africa from a variety of excellent locations. Great viewing as always. Regards, Jeff.
R.I.P., No.9!
Thanks Ron , many thanks go to Mr Cameron as without him this tribute wouldn’t be possible 👍
@@TheStephengthompson real shame she'll never move again...i hope they add back one more A4 to run along with S.N.G and Bittern...
Great video Steve, lots of great locations used. No9 will be missed, Regards James
Thanks James, thought it best to keep the video shortish as I’ve loads of footage.
How the years fly by. i first saw this loco sixty years ago!!
Thanks Paul , glad I brought back memories for you 👍
A very special locomotive. I had the privilege of seeing her at Shildon at the Great Goodbye. I know I had to be there and travelled from Northern Ireland to see all the surviving A4 locomotives.
Thanks Robin, hope it won’t be long before Sir Nigel Gresley is back on our metals . Regards Steve
@@TheStephengthompson I had to use my phone to get a photo of her. I had to poke it through the fence to get my photograph that day as she was by herself and not with the other five locomotives.
Good compilation, Steve, and one for the history books!
Thanks Alan, pleased you enjoyed it 👍
Very nice video Steve, really sad to see her gone from the mainline. Great work👍
Thanks Sam, big shame to see her retire but we must be pleased we had all the years of her on the rails 👍
She's having work done to her she's at the back of the queue though so it will take a while for her to get a rebuild like flying Scotsman and sir Nigel gresly is currently having her overhaul after sir Nigel gresly union of South Africa will have 10 years of no service so she is going to run again but she works in heritage lines before her overhaul so she still runs
Spectacular video of number 9 :)
Thanks Connor , I have loads of footage of 09 but decided to use the best shots 👍
Stunning video compilation 👍 a truly magic locomotive.
Thanks Hugh , must admit I’ve been fortunate to capture plenty of decent memories of this engine hard at work 👍
Magical shots. First one great (looks like a hilly Antarctica) while later on you find snow falling, something only rarely occurring on railways in Victoria and NSW, Oz.
Thinking of all UK rail enthusiasts given "it" looks to have seen mainline tours and heritage railway trip cancellations.
Thanks Edmund, can’t beat steam tours filmed in the snowy scenery I must admit. Regards Steve
Hi Steve, Great compilation ,.....Dave
Thanks Dave , appreciate the comment as ever 👍
@@TheStephengthompson Thanks Steve, your welcome, stay safe.. Dave 🚂
Excellent compilation of the old girl Steve.
Thanks Nige , plenty of footage of 09 so it was difficult to decide what to use 👍
Wonderful video Steve, thumbs up :)
Thanks Simon, appreciate the kind comment as ever .
Fine collection of clips Steve of a top loco which will be greatly missed
Thanks Austin, yes a great loss for all lineside fans I must admit.
excellent final shots of union of Pacific👍 shame it couldn't run through Kent
Barry The Diesel Electric & Steam Spotter In Kent . Her name is Union of South Africa
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated 👍
Great compilation. N09 has run my entire lifetime save rebuilds. It will be strange never seeing her run again. Is he at least going to put it somewhere on display or locked away mothballed for no one to see?? Isnt he doing this with another loco as well?
Great video great steam train
Thanks Gerard , always get a cracking display from 09 and will miss that chime whistle that’s for sure. Steve
really beautiful train and surroundings :) has added a like and a subscribe
Thanks for the kind comment as it’s much appreciated 👍
Beautiful scenery - she isn't going very fast, but sounds as if she's really working hard - I take it the gradients are not kind...
Thanks Paul , yes the gradients vary from 1in 75 on Shap , 1 in 100 mostly on the Settle & Carlisle and 1 in 69 to 1 in 88 on Beattock.
Great vidéo 👍
Thanks for the kind comment 👍
Sadly, it seems like Nigel and Bittern's overhauls will take a while, so we'll have an absence of A4s on the main for a while. First time in ages we haven't had any A4s running on the main.
Nicely put together Stephen, shame to see her go. Feels strange not filming any steam at present, hopefully things improve soon. Where was 8:30 at with viaduct in background and 12:30. Cheers.
Thanks David, be a big miss but thanks to Mr Cameron this video is possible. 8-30 is at Newbiggin on the S&C near Kirkby thore and 12-30 is Southbound at Shap Summit 👍
@@TheStephengthompson thanks Stephen, roll on the steam again!👍
Where does the A4 go now? After the final bow on the main line? Display at York with Mallard? Storage? New owner? Or a sad demise?
真是棒的蒸氣機車與景色。
Any reason for the retirement? Metal fatigue?
Now there will no A4 hauled tours for quite some time.. not just because of Covid-19 but because well: 4468 Mallard is static, 60009 UoSA has retired, Sir Nigel Gresley is undergoing an overhaul and Bittern is awaiting an overhaul
The RailTourer! Something to look forward to 😁🚂
Was the whistle on the A4s different to the other LNER Pacific’s? Was it the different location that gave it its characteristic sound?
Thanks David, not sure if the whistle is different but I’m sure someone will know.
Does this mean no A 4s are capable of steaming now
Don’t think it’ll be long before Sir Nigel Gresley is back on the rails. Not sure what the situation is with Bittern though. Regards Steve
great footage but i think union of south africa should be getting a new boiler, one of the fastest steam engines there is,( also mallard), & they are leaving them in museums parked up with a damaged boilers, there should be new boiler,s sitting waiting for when they are needed, then replaced, not run them into the ground one by one, then put them in museums, they should be out, all up & down the uk & doing what they were built in the first for. even though steam has an exemption when it come,s to burning coal next year, ( the coal ban on 1st may) i think so called climate change has prob got something to do with it, they send nuclear missiles up into space to blow them up, but some how its buning coal that they blame for bad weather etc,
Cameroon? Do you mean Cameron? ooops.
Thanks Alistair for pointing out my error which I’ve now fixed 👍
Superb set of clips Steve - well done for making this. Curious to know the location of the uphill shot at 13 mins in (is it Shotlock tunnel?) Best regards. Julian
Thanks Julian , the shot at 13-00 is just before the summit at Aisgill with Shotlock in the distance. Regards Steve
@@TheStephengthompson Thanks - the tunnel looked familiar but i've not seen it from the AisGill side like that.
@@TheStephengthompson Thanks Steve - must try it one day.
Same rubbish photography.
I like your video footage oh hang on you haven’t any 😂😂😂
Well, come on then, let's see your obviously superior footage...
