60009 Union of South Africa & 70000 Britannia at YORK, 7th March 2020

  • Two tours , 2 great pacific steam locos!
The first tour to arrive was The White Rose from Shrewsbury hauled by 70000 Britannia, followed shortly after by The Yorkshireman from Ealing Broadway, worked by 60009 Union of South Africa, on what could be her last mainline run.
After the tours arrive , both locos head off to the NRM, where they are seen together, for what may be the last time.
An emotional departure from the station by number 9, as she says Good Bye to hundreds of fans on the platform.
Included are a couple of clips of the other two A4s in the NRM, Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley, which is nearing the end of a long overhaul.
Finally 70000 leaves back for Shrewsbury, where as The Yorkshireman is diesel hauled back to Ealing Broadway.

So many memories of my trainspotting days in the late 50's early 60's, A4s being my top loco, memories to of stealing into Doncaster Works on a Saturday afternoon locos being repaired and locos lined up for scrapping.

I remember all the A4's trainspotting at Kings Cross in the fifties. Even got a ride up platform 10 on the footplate after the train had left. I remember when they used to thrash on the greasy rails. I grew up within a mile of Euston, St Pancras and Kings Cross.

My God. This caught me on the hop. I was watching the videos of the last HST on the ECML and couldn't understand the euphoria for what to me was a high speed DMU! Then 60009 arrives at York and leaves with long blasts on its whistle on what could be its last tour. Now that really is emotional. I will admit now to having tears as that chime whistle sounded out. HST? Nah! A4 Yesssss!

1951GL The last time I saw Britannia was in York in the early hours of a bitter February morning in the ealy '60s. I was waiting in a stationary train at what was then platform 7. Britannia ran southbound, tender first, light engine down one of the middle lines (now no longer there) It was clanking and rattling and oozing steam at every pore. I remember thinking, British Railways board don't give a s**t about our heritage. Apart from loco's they destroyed a great deal of our railway heritage in the name of modernity.

@Phil Clark The aerodynamic shape and swooping lines are iconic, but it's more than just skin deep. When these late design locomotives get into their stride it's nothing short of an engineering work of art, a kinetic sculpture, a pinnacle of mans expression in steam, both aesthetically and as a utilitarian useful machine. Precision delivery of raw power is a thing of beauty. And thank you for sharing so others can experience.

I believe this was the last service to be pulled by Union of South Africa before it goes into retirement, so better make the most of that whistle while they can

@@andrewbailey7999 oh right, that makes sense then. That's a shame, too expensive to overhaul I wonder?

I'm not sure the exact reason for not overhauling, but I think Sir Nigel Gresley, one of the other surviving A4s, is being worked on atm with the intent of going back on the mainline. I might be wrong though

@@andrewbailey7999 And to Moss as well, the owner has decided not to overhaul the loco and is withdrawing it from the mainline. It is his intention to bring the loco back to his farm in Fife for display there. His plans have been well documented in the railway press a few years ago. And yes you are correct about 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, it WILL be going mainline when the overhaul is complete.
