  • In 1939, when Opal Lee was just 12, her family moved into a house that stood in an all-White neighborhood. They had lived at the home for just five days when a mob showed up and "tore it asunder." More than eight decades later, she owns the land again. Steve Hartman has her story in "On the Road."

If it was never actually owned by her family, that’s a little different. It wasn’t clear if this was the case. If it was owned by her family, unless her families it or it was foreclosed upon, it still should have been in the family, but I can’t imagine them paying the land the whole time and never lived there longer than a few days.

Waiting 80 years is a shame? How about waiting nearly 600 years and counting, if your native american? Or Till the end of time if you’re a Neanderthal? What amount of time has to pass before you deem it a “shame”?

As much as I'd like this to be a feel good story, its triggering. This not only happened to thousands of black people during Jim Crow, its still happening. Look up Josephine Wrights story. She just passed away, right before she was able to see true justice. Only reason she was helped at all was because her story went viral. Who knows if the stress lead to her death but she spent her final years, months, minutes fighting land developers.

We enjoyed each other’s company and had fun together. One day I walked down to their house and seen a burned up cross in the yard, and grass burned. They were not there. I never seen her again. I was so sad. That was my first experience with racism. It happened in Davie, Florida. 💔😢🙏

We ran to the north and other places from white terrorism NOT voluntarily migration. And the years of lost equity and wealth and poverty we experience today is a direct result of that. Even if someone wants to be obtuse and pretend white privilege doesn’t exist--the ability to not be terrorized in every area of life and attempts to better your quality of life for centuries based on being black says otherwise.

    What a beautiful inspiring story.
My father with his mother and siblings were bulldozed off their farm in Constantia. Cape Town. South Africa.
    That was apartheid.
After 60 years the land still vacant.
    We received our land back.
    Generations has passed.
Our fathers and family could not witness this historical event.
But we will keep on relating to our children and future families to never ever give up hope.
    Thank you.

I’m overwhelmed by Opal Lee’s story and I’m thankful for habitat to do what’s right what’s just and fair i’m saddened and happy at the same time. Praise God for revealing things that are hidden that will come to the light and that takes action on our part as well. As a matter fact, we definitely have to be careful with paying our taxes on our property, my daughter had an incident where they had the wrong address and that happened twice and when she went down there, she had to pay her taxes and they act like it was her fault of sort, but in fact, the first time she straightened that out and it still happened so we have to be very careful. Love you, RUclips family❤
