- Opal Lee was just 12 years old when a racist mob burned down her family's home in Fort Worth, Texas. Eight decades later, with the help of donors and nonprofit groups, she was gifted the property, and a new home was built on it for free. Steve Hartman has more in "On the Road."

My mother in law is fighting for land that was stolen from their great grandfather in Arkansas. This happened all over the South & more black people need to look into seeing if this occurred in their lineage.
It also happened in the north. So make sure you look there too.
That's the reparations that I'm for. Either return the land and property to black families who once owned it, or pay them the face value in today's market. That's what is fair.

I’m a genealogy researcher who has helped a gentleman find a plot of land in Mississippi. The records are there. His grandfather was given one square mile of farmland by the government. I found the records and got his family some closure.

Ms. Opal is my hero. I grew up in Cowtown and she has been a blessing for all of us.
I'm beyond happy this wonderful Lady has her property back. But there's so many cases like hers down here in Texas. We shouldn't be waiting for them to reclaim their property. All these families should have their homes and property returned by the state.

Such a heartwarming story. Imagine the countless Black Americans that lost their life's savings, investments, and assets in a blink of an eye with no justice. This land will always be cursed for that.
And there are thousands of stories like these. Local and Federal governments did nothing to protect the owners, prosecute the criminals nor compensate the tax paying citizens for their losses- and sometimes loss of life!
