Picked up a lady in the evening, friendly conversation. She tells me she’s reserved a 150 mile trip for the next morning and wonders if it may come to me. Asked her how much was she paying Uber, $400 she he said, I offered to take her for $300. She said “that’s unfair, I’ll give the $400 cash, pick me up at 8am”

When I take long trips it's because I feel like doing something different, seeing another part of my State. Possibly having a great interesting conversation. It's never profit because I'm going to drive home empty. The 1hr trips to a city near by I can get ride back and if that happens it's really good. But going 4hrs you have 0% chance of a ride back. And your math just proves to me that people driving those crossover SUVs don't make money ever. My Model 3 std range is $0.18 per mile no matter how I run the numbers, that's as high as I can go. And that's after 80,000 Uber miles in 14 months. It's all about your cost per mile!

    • @tipyouintheapp

You drove 80,000 miles in 14 months? 😮😮😮

  • @MJSmithGroup
    @MJSmithGroup 3 месяца назад +2

    Nope.
You have to assume most (if not all) of the return trip is going to be deadheading.
    Lets' do the math.
    True distance: 250 miles
    True time: 8.5 hours
    Estimated expenses (at $0.35/mile): $87
    Net after expenses: $118
    Net Hourly: $14 per hour.
If you're in the mood to be driving for the next 8 hours, there might be a good private ride conversion opportunity here. I'd wager uber is charging the rider somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 give or take.
Do the math on $400 for the trip. ($400-$87)/8.5 = $36.80 per hour. Not earth shattering, but far more palatable.
An interesting thing I've discovered on some of these kinds of long trips, about 15-20% of the riders are going to need a ride back later in the day. Although if you're going to do that, get at least a 50% non-refundable deposit UPFRONT. The flake rate can be pretty high.

Hard pass on the 4.80 rating long distance. Ask yourself, do you really want to ride 4-5 hrs with a person rated low. They could be very high maintenance, bad conversation, etc... and no tip?
Im like you Levi, i work for and earn big tips. It involves more dead miles, but i write off all miles door to door daily. I prefer 20-30 mile airport runs. I dont like to brag, but because i work those kinds of trips, i get tips 90% of trips.

You can always accept the trip then ask the passenger for a return fee to get you back home. Paid upfront , cash or Venmo before you go. If they decline, cancel the trip. Depending on the time of day, you may have to get a hotel room to sleep. Add the hotel room to the return fee. All rides should make sense for the driver, or why do them? It's crazy to lose money on a ride as soon as you start driving. The Uber fee, plus the return fee is still probably cheaper than a cab ride. The cab rides build in the return fee. Uber doesn't.

Deal with 3 people per day or deal with 25? Yes the short trips are the most profitable in terms of dollars per mile, at least in Albany.. but like i said... Dealing with all those people could present issues depending on your market.
