It was a combination of the Vietnam War, the Black Liberation Movement, Women's Liberation, the Sexual Revolution, all of that. Then came the "Reagan Revolution", Len Bias dying, "Just Say No", The War On Drugs and then crack cocaine. Whew! Stoner humor went out the window, C&C broke up, Cheech started doing TV and Disney, Chong took his act on the road and his kids started acting (Rae Dawn, Robbi and Marcus (He played Huey Newton in Panther and Tank in The Matrix) and most of us who didn't die young, got married (divorced) and had kids and got older. The best stoner movie ever. Me and my friends saw it when it first came out. Foged up the car before going in the theater. I'm sure the theaters that showed that movie made a ton of money on candy and popcorn.
My favorite scene was when the cop came up to them and asked them what they wanted, then asked them if they were going to eat the hotdog on the dash. Priceless.
I opened for Cheech and chong 5 out of 6 of their first performances together after 28 years. Their jokes ALL worked. Every single joke got a big laugh. After 28 years they were still hilarious. And very nice people as well.

Isaac, while I loved the (first two) Harold and Kumar films, and agree much of the humor, plot points etc. is very similar to Cheech and Chong, and the comparison wouldn't necessarily be 'a disgrace', I do think the point is clearly about quality, legitimacy and originality rather than genre, topic, goal, plot. One could say Cheech and Chong were different cause they made a film with their own money, their own jokes, their own means, while Harold and Kumar was a big budget franchise from the start, that was supported with money, comedic writers, special effects, trained actors and the precedent of such films already existing. All this shows in the films, and some of the jokes feel more forced or kind of sound like they come from some SNL-style joke assembly line, and when they don't (which to be fair is most of the time), the obvious 'insider' status and the differing time can take it from counterculture to cringy, while Cheech and Chong aren't that different from the people they portray. What Cheech and Chong did with their films was not a thing before them, it was an uphill battle to make it one, it was the creativity of mostly these two guys who wrote it and made it work, and while Harold and Kumar are iconic films in their own right, it was also just hollywood doing what they already know works, it's a different time and perhaps we should be glad for that, but let's be honest, it's not exactly the same.
Yo I LOVE Cheech and Chong. Talked to Cheech several times. But Harold and Kumar are def them of a newer generation and deserve to be mentioned in the same breath without a doubt IMO
When this came out it hit so hard with us younger high school kids. We laughed and laughed the entire movie and then talked about if for months in class laughing the whole time. .
This filled in a lot for me. On the commentary on the DVD, they didn't really explain very much. It truly was historic. And despite a shallow plot, brilliant.
I was 4 years old when these two met. I got turned on to them in like 1977. Like many, I was one of those cats that actually rolled a J with the Big Bamboo paper. My fate was sealed in a much righteous way.
79 was a breakthrough year for me. Already being a fan at 15 years old, that movie is still with me. Having the opportunity to meet Tommy was a highlight for me, for sure.
One time my buddy and me got hired by a lady to move her furniture, We rented a U-HAUL van and got stoned and were moving her stuff. Anyway, I was on the truck by myself and her dog, an old German Shepherd brought his choo toy up the ramp and stored it on the truck. That was really cool, he was a good old German Shepherd. Anyway, then I was moving one of her pieces of furniture that had drawers and a mirror on it, but the mirror was covered with a blanket, and the blanket fell of. I was so stoned, that I called my buddy and said "THIS LADY HAS A PAINTING OF ME MAN." True story. That was the way it was in those days, I knew so many people like Cheech and Chong, that was before hard drugs and in the stoner days, just a little bit of time before the Tate murders, back when that window opened and we went through it, and then we all climbed back in, or most of us did, and the window closed.
Milder weed to , I gave up smoking pot when I gave up cigarettes around 21 , but tried some of this Hydro stuff a couple yrs back just to be polite . . & holy hell ! got tunnel vision & all , these modern strains are,t fun , if I ever go back to pot it will be bush weed cookies .
We tend to become more creative after a little weed, idk? I got your situational joke immediately. It was actually something you couldn't have rehearsed. It was improvised by you, for that particular moment & place in time. Funny shit!
I saw this movie in the theater back around 1978. Believe it there were actually guys like this everywhere back than. Watched the movie at least 100 times and still laugh my face off!! Bravo guys Bravo!!!!
Phenomenal. These guys are so smart and there’s nobody else like them on the planet and probably never will be. These guys have given me so many laughs over the years. They are perfectly suited to each other. Very very clever men and they didn’t know it when they were young. it it’s just just a unique gift that had to come to the forefront.
The brilliance of Up in Smoke is the alloy of: A buddy movie. A road movie. A divine quest movie. +pot. And somehow manages to have character arcs that reach high but end where they start.
At 8, 6 & 2 my kids would go around doing the whole "Dave's not here" bit, they thought it was the funniest thing ever, it was, and still is, needless to say I was proud, though living in Utah, my neighbors and other parents didn't hold the same appreciation.
First time I ever heard these two guys was the Christmas recording in the 70’s. Still funny to this day straight or stoned! No one will ever be comparable to these beautiful people!
I pride myself on being one of the first British people to have heard of them. My brother brought the C&C album home in about '75 and I learnt the "Dave" sketch off by heart to amuse my primary school mates.
my parents had their cosby and carlin albums... my brothers and had our cheech and chong lps....classic comedy..nothing today comes close..its all because of the these guys that it came to be
2 legends that made a kind of revolution, and living legends. If you EVER get the chance to meet either one of these amazing fellows DO IT. They really are good people

Did I comment on this yet man? I don’t remember. I was 21 in 78 when in the Force and stationed at March AFB saw UIS in Riverside. Right time, right place. Thanks C&C for the memories. Big fan since 1972.
These guys were the best. I have a cousin who could have been Cheechs brother. Drove the same 64 Chevy Lowrider and was ridiculous funny. He made working in the grape vineyards of the Central Valley California fun, if that is even possible. Had their albums, watched all of their movies first run, and to this day still say quotes from their best stuff. Timeless comedy that has stood the test of time.
I always tell people, "no matter what is going on, I can watch a cheech and Chong movie or listen to a record, and genuinely relate and LAUGH! Yall are a blessing for SURE! Thank you 💜
The settings of Cheech & Chong can be translated into just about any comedic plot, insanely funny, nobody got really hurt, situation applicable to anybody and easily acceptable by most young people. I enjoyed them in the 1970s. What a hoot they were.🤣😊😸👍👍👍
Up In Smoke was one of the best and funniest movies of the 70's. I was in my 20's back then and still watching it in my 60 's. Thank you for the memories Cheech and Chong. You guys nailed it!
My wife and I had seen "Up in Smoke" and loved it, a couple we ran around with hadn't, they were fairly straight laced. We got a call and they wanted us to go with them to see "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie", when it got to the part with the necrophilia I thought the gal with us was going to faint. My wife and I laughed so hard I thought we were going to need oxygen when we left the theater. Up in Smoke was great but the scene where they stole the 57 Thunderbird and got gas all over them when they used a garbage can to steal gas to fill it up and then burnt up the interior when they lit a joint is one of the funniest skits in any movie. The whole movie had me blown away.
My first experience with Cheech & Chong was in the early '80s. I was a kid walking through the living room one night and seeing my old man in his chair laughing his ass off at them on Showtime. I started watching and have been hooked ever since. Chong has always cracked me up the most with his passive humor. Very fortunate to grow up in the late '70s and through the '80s. "Back when the Universe meant something" Ashley Roachclip. Dope A Thon '82.
I bought every one of their albums! They were a duo of comedy relief with their own characters blended into what we see as reality. They were right up there with Richard Pryor, George Carlin & Rodney Dangerfield. While others abeit, Robin Williams were making their way to reach our funny bones. I remember when I bought "Big Bamboo", after unsealing it, I found this king-size, ganja rolling paper enclosed! I kept it there for keepsake reasons but my friends would use their's to roll these incredible half - whole ounce fatties! It was hilarious to just pass something so big around! If youre really a fan of Cheech & Chong, you'd notice how they point out how our society & establishment is racist, prejudice & criminally corrupted! These guys had their ups & downs between themselves, as most do! But I'll always love them! I grew up listening to them! Ill always cherish their raw form of talent for comedy! God Bless these guys! 👍 They'll never be forgetten!
Yes I agree! Cheech and Chong nailed it good! They will never be anything like them. Just one of a kind simply genus really. I love watching them to this day!

don't disgrace Cheech and Chong by comparing them to Harold and Kumar
Yup, not even in the same league...wannabes.
AGREED..... H and K sucked shit.
ALLUPINYA Cheech and Chong: One Last Joint
Yo I LOVE Cheech and Chong. Talked to Cheech several times. But Harold and Kumar are def them of a newer generation and deserve to be mentioned in the same breath without a doubt IMO
When this came out it hit so hard with us younger high school kids. We laughed and laughed the entire movie and then talked about if for months in class laughing the whole time. .
2 legends gonna go through a marathon of all the movies
This filled in a lot for me. On the commentary on the DVD, they didn't really explain very much. It truly was historic. And despite a shallow plot, brilliant.
I was 4 years old when these two met. I got turned on to them in like 1977. Like many, I was one of those cats that actually rolled a J with the Big Bamboo paper. My fate was sealed in a much righteous way.
You divulged too much information Keith, now the government might be watching.
Bambu. Big Bambu. Not bamboo. But in your defense, you were probably too high to notice the spelling.
I did it to
You could've done a lot worse! They are still funny. Whether it's new or old!
@@DesertDigger1 probably!
Funny shit!
Grew up listening to these guys on vinyl watched their movies saw them live when they got back together good times
Greatest men who ever lived these guys changed history and without them Our world would be fucked
GT4 DR1FT3R Yeah exactly! They are funny as hell! Please elaborate on what you said. Would be great to hear your opinions.
GT4 DR1FT3R production budget $800,000 box office gross $44 million
Doug Hiawatha Ouch, stick him with the Stripes/Warren Oats jab, gotcha! That one never gets old! Love it!
Yep , we listened to all their cassettes over & over & then when all their movies came out it was gold . . good times .
I saw this movie in the theater back around 1978. Believe it there were actually guys like this everywhere back than. Watched the movie at least 100 times and still laugh my face off!! Bravo guys Bravo!!!!
its about 2 guys trying to score a joint...what more d`ya want?
Give me some papers, and we'll be straight!🤣🤪🤩
I want them to score it
Best was buying the album with the huge rolling paper. Actually rolled an ounce with it. Back in the day 90 bucks would get me a quarter pound.
No one will ever be comparable to these beautiful people!
...a little more for Santa Claus,. Little bit more for Santa Claus... (. Making the reindeer fly...)
I watched UP IN SMOKE in grade nine whacked on weed!!!!
It was up there with Pink Floyd THE WALL
I pride myself on being one of the first British people to have heard of them. My brother brought the C&C album home in about '75 and I learnt the "Dave" sketch off by heart to amuse my primary school mates.
"Oh wow, you just ate more acid than I've EVER seen anybody do."
Hope you're not busy for a month.
Howie Dewin ...hey don’t act the fool man
@@alphabeta591 hey man i aint never had no acid before man
@@reichreenactor4874 I see the guys on acid walking around my neighborhood and their heads look like watermelons man (or balloons idk I forgot)
@@stonedbeachaidan6574 Pumpkins.....LOL!!!!
that last sentence was so philosophical
First saw that as a freshman in college at the student union in 1979...I was never the same afterward! lol
It was the biggest comedy hit ever! till this day I'm always quoting phrases from Up In Smoke!! I wasn't looking at his neck!😂
my parents had their cosby and carlin albums... my brothers and had our cheech and chong lps....classic comedy..nothing today comes close..its all because of the these guys that it came to be
@Gerry Cooney Wasn't Goebbels a liberal? He killed.
2 legends that made a kind of revolution, and living legends. If you EVER get the chance to meet either one of these amazing fellows DO IT. They really are good people
There could never be another duo like them 🙌🏽
I love their movies they are doing exactly what stoners do. Thank you guys for the great entertainment you have given me and the rest of the world.
So glad this was part of my timeless generation I laff just as hard now watching Up and Smoke as I did oh my God 40 years ago they will always be classic and they're still cool AF
Best times ever, anybody home? These two guys have made me laugh for 40 years.😁

Ten, twenty years from now... I will still occasionally watch Up in Smoke, guaranteed!
*CHEECH & CHONG'S LEGACY HAS WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME AND WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE FUNNY BELLY LAUGHS FOR ALL TIMES!!*
Did I comment on this yet man? I don’t remember. I was 21 in 78 when in the Force and stationed at March AFB saw UIS in Riverside. Right time, right place. Thanks C&C for the memories. Big fan since 1972.
the truck there driving is resting in Stockton ca off mount diablo exit I-5
I just love these two heads!
I love you guys you always make me laugh. Thank you.
I'm 31 born in 87,grew up on this movie and watched it repeatedly,Kumar and Harold...the new version and just as funny.salute from North Texas
My life would not be the same without this movie....all their movies
These guys were the best. I have a cousin who could have been Cheechs brother. Drove the same 64 Chevy Lowrider and was ridiculous funny. He made working in the grape vineyards of the Central Valley California fun, if that is even possible. Had their albums, watched all of their movies first run, and to this day still say quotes from their best stuff. Timeless comedy that has stood the test of time.
I was buying the albums, and everyone thought they were like those two characters in real life, just acting, really fun and genius'!
Dave's not here!
You guys are legend
Grew up smokin wit these 2.thank ya
Two AWESOME men!!! I love them...
They'll never be forgetten!
Yes I agree! Cheech and Chong nailed it good! They will never be anything like them. Just one of a kind simply genus really. I love watching them to this day!
Man, I remember when I was 14 hanging out in my friends room smoking weed, listening to those records and visualizing what was going on. Those were the days I’d like to relive. Good times.
"Hey, Man! That's False Advertising !"
I just met the ol lady n said her out ,,,she made it thru this movie n Phantasm n Day on the Green AC/DC, n I knew she was the right one ✌🏼40 years this coming year
The original Kings of comedy!!
These guys are the best I ever seen behind the camera when it comes to just being yourself on a everyday life as a stoneer😆🇹🇹👍😘
These guys were the best. "Don't answer the phone."
I saw up in smoke when I was 14. It was at the drive in and my bff and I hid in the trunk to get in. We came out through the backseat. It was a double feature , that night, with the Warriors. To this day, I will be 54 on Sunday, Up In Smoke and The Warriors are my all time favorite movies! Great memories and really great times! Yes I started young. A wild child. My boyfriend was driving the car that night and he was 18. He would so be in jail in today's world.
