- This beautiful Surf Green 1951 Bel Air has a near “perfect blend” of being mildly updated to that “just right point” where most of the original limitations have been addressed while retaining the soul and classic nature of the car. Come along for the TEST DRIVE and learn about the little known in-line six engine called the 261 which was the ultimate “sleeper” back in the day and known as the V8 Killer.

Amazing. Puts my late model car to shame, awesome car, thank you for producing this video and posting it.
That is a beautiful body color...usually don't like greens but that's a winner. Back in 1964, my mom had a 1956 Chevrolet 150 straight-6 that had a higher top end on the highway than my uncle's V-8 Mercury Comet. We were driving behind her in the Comet and my uncle had to floor it and it still couldn't catch up.
I have a 73 GMC 3/4 with the 292, which was the replacement for the 261, with headers, dual carbs, and dual exhausts.
My dad’s 1962 Canadian full size Pontiac had a Chevy 261 inline 6 in it.
Back then, GM put Pontiac trim on Chevy bodies and chassis in Canada and the Pontiacs got the 261 as the base engine instead of the 235.
The Pontiacs could come with the 283, 327, all the way up to the dual quad 409. My dad had a 1964 with the 283 and Powerglide.
Nice car. I like the sleeper look of the car. My car is no sleeper. With a 454, Super T-10 four speed and 3" exhaust in my '50, I can't sneak up on anybody. LOL
An absolute gem of a car. Love the growel of a well fed six with twin pipes. Sweet ride and I'm a mopar slant 6 guy. love the pre 55 GM shapes.
Idk why, but I’ve always considered the 1950s having the BEST styling in their cars . Chrome, trim, whitewall tires, and sheer size just give off that PERFECT charm to me 😍
We love them too!
Love the color
Very nice. I've always liked the 55 but this very cool.
Thanks!
I gave a high five just because it contains a six cylinder still in it. Great vlog, thanks for posting and sharing with us. Much success wished for the future.
That sir is one beautiful ride
I loved that car!
Actually this car came with a 235 and not a 216 as he stated. The Power Glide lettering on the trunk denotes that it came with an automatic. All of those were 235’s and not 216’s! I’m not a Retro Mod fan but this one is done right and is exceptional!
As a high school kid my first Chev was a '51... It had a 216 which had a dip-type of oil system... My second Chev was a '54 with a 235, the big difference being a fully pressurized oil system... Both manual shift... I'm not sure about the 235 in a Power Glide '52 but I do remember there was some kind of power difference between the manual and Power Glide models...
He said 261, not 216.
Not until 1953
Nice just bought a 1951 Deluxe convertible with a 216, since I am restoring maybe I should replace with a 261
I have a complete 261 with low miles. I’ll sell you for $900 total.
@@johnnyacevedo681 where are you located?
Great video nice car …..looking for that vintage to pair with my 51 Merc
Love this Chevy my favourite dream girl
Really nice car!

I'm impressed
Jet smooth ride!
thank you
Love your car, the 216 never came with the power glide your original engine was a 235. What rear did you install to eliminate the torque tube?
You can put a four-speed Saginaw and a rear end out of a Camaro nova any of them will bolt right up
Wow beautiful love it
261 was base engine in Canadian Pontiacs
Building same car was going to put a 292 in there but saved that for a 1941 suburban so now I’m putting the gmc 302 the holy grail of the inline 6s
The Surf Green Makes U Want To Hop in It & Head for the Beach. One of Best Greens Chevy Came Out W/ in the 50's.The Same Green on A 57 Bel Air, Is ,I Believe One of Rarest Colors of the 57 Chevys. Saw One on U Tube W/ Every Possible Option U Could Order, Price Less.Is The Carb Set Up, Dual 2 Barrels ?
Right Good Vid.
Respect....
Love your car mate
Nice car
Long live the 261
The inline 292 would be nice also
MyRod.com thanks a lot,, that's an actualization! Now i got it.
I stand corrected.....
Nice 👍😎
My 51 styleline has a 292. What rack and pinion did you add?
My buddy had a slightly modified Chevy in-line six and I couldn’t keep up with my 350 4 barrel Camaro
Wow!
My dad had a '50 4 door sedan. I blew the engine racing. I always thought that the '51 had better lines than either the '49 or the '50. I'm surprised that the A/C was added but not a radio.
What is the HP and Torque on this car? I never heard you say.
Real Damsel
Nobody mentioned the 302 GMC Inline 6 which had more power yet...
We called the motor, babbit beaters
How much horsepower is that monster putting out?
What do you do for fun?
I wonder what it would be like with a GMC 292.
Would mind it in light blue
What's wrong with the Jimmy 292cu", b& S'd to 302cu"? Get a 456 rear, tremec 5/6-spd, injection that LOOKS like carbs, split manifold to duals,--take-down someone's stock 302V-8 '67 "Z"
Dual carbs, or even Tri-power, not FI.
Might have missed it but did the 261 i6 come out early 60's
it came out in 1954
54. It's replacement, the 292, came out in the early 60s.
1952
The 261 was a POS Babbit beater, just like the 216.
Check the facts, I think you put the keyboard in use before thinking this on through.
302 GMC?
Why no radio?
Which color
Yes, it looks like the 235, but it is a better, heavier-duty engine, as well as faster.
The 55 265 was slow.
My friends 272 Ford would out run it, Also a 55.
Saw a 55 Chevy with 302 GMC and Scott blower
That was cool
Drop in a 1952 GMC 302 six and that one will seem slow.
Exactly what I’m doing
If it were mine I'd put a Hydra Madic 315 in it.
Changing from 216 to 235, you had to move radiater to the front side of brackets. 235 was longer than a 216
Not true. 235 is a drop in replacement. Newer 235’s have the water pump in a slightly different position, but that is about it.
@@holykingfish when I changed mine over, you had to move rad. To the front of the support so water pump would fit. Been in 1973, but still remember. I also owned 3, 1954 corvettes, 6 cylinder 235 with tri power
Fair enough. You had a newer 235 with the lower mounted water pump. There are ways around dealing with the water pump without moving the rad, but it doesn’t matter. My point is that the engines are the same size. Cool that you’ve been enjoying these cars for so long. Happy motoring.
Bel Air came out in 1953 not before......
Bel-Air cameout in 1950 check with Chevrolet.
You still can’t beat a 1955 chevy with a 265 v8 engine with the 261 engine on that 51 chevy.
It only had 15-20 hp more than the 235. It was not V8 killer, it was never a sleeper, it was a doggie truck engine, just barely more than the 235.
I wish it was 4 speed auto
Too bad it ain't the three-speed manual three on the much better my father had one!
Too bad you put R & P in it. Too twitchy. It is a kool car though.
Hate the Modern Steering Colum and tilt Wheel Like the Motor But if I had My Choice I would Have everything else Original. 3 On The tree I had one and it was original except a 235 Engine. Foe It Is RUINED!
Two sixty one sleeper V8 killer ...? Yeah, I would never guy anything from you bud ... ever.
Another Frankestein
Horrible dash board.A little Frankestein
The 6 cylinders were the Ugliest Chevrolet ever made.
