    "Dead Poets Society" is a classic movie, but it just wouldn't be the same without the late, great Robin Williams. There would probably be more diversity within the students, and Neil and Todd would likely be openly gay, rather than just implied subtext.

    The reason all of these teen movies became classics was because they accurately reflected the audiences they intended to reach, which was usually that generation of teens watching the movies. You can go back as far as To Sir With Love to represent certain generations of teen movies. To Sir With Love represented the Boomer generation in the UK back in 1967 while American Boomers grew up watching Meatballs, Little Darlings, and Porky's. The early Gen-X generation had the John Hughes movies while the later Gen-X had Heathers and Clueless. The early Millennials had She's All That, Can't Hardly Wait and Mean Girls while the later Millennials had Easy A. Gen-Z is due for their generation defining movie to come out.

    I got a divorce from a real dirtbag when I was only 23, and went to see the Breakfast Club when it first came out. It made me feel so intensely nostalgic for the carefree problems of dealing with uninterested parents and school compared to being in a ugly, "grownup" relationship full of trauma. I kind of instantly felt better though, and decided I was going to be young as long as possible, at least in my attitude and outlook, I was done being an adult for a bit! I loved Ferris Bueller's day off as well, so many fun movies came out in that era! I kind of got stuck though, being young, and to this day, never regretted it, I've had the best time being young at heart, even when old, it's awesome!!

      You're not kidding! I didn't mean that teens don't have horrible problems, just that, at that time, I personally just wanted to "go back in time", before I was in such an "adult" situation. It's just how I felt about it then. I definitely don't think it's all great to be a teenager, just that I decided to keep an open, friendly and young at heart attitude forever, and I'm glad i did.

  • @FatsquatchPNW
    @FatsquatchPNW 2 года назад +48

    You could literally populate this list with *just* John Hughes films. Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, Sixteen Candles, Some Kind of Wonderful...the man was a genius who genuinely understood the depth and breadth of what coming of age in the 80s was all about. And not one of them could be remade and still capture the essence and nuance of the original in even the remotest of ways. Reboot? Mayyyyyybe, following the exploits of the children of the original characters and incorporating elements of the original story...but given the way Hollywood has followed that trend I don't see that going well at all. It'd be like trying to reboot/remake Gone With the Wind or Casablanca. You can't recapture lightning in a bottle, and you can't recapture what made a classic A Classic. Just leave well enough alone, and let these films remain timeless as they are.

    No offense but if they want to remake Grease like they did with West Side Story that is alright with me. I have no problem with it. I mean it will never take itself too seriously so it isn't that big of a deal. I can imagine a lot of people in those roles now that could fit the right age requirement.
    If they wanna remake The Princess Diaries be my guest. Honestly they could remake any of these movies and I wouldn't be upset about it. Sorry people.

    I wouldn't mind if Sixteen Candles was remade. It's super problematic now. It might actually be decent film if made nowadays.

    a few of these were the first in series (with not always the same characters).
    You bring up stage versions of the films - is there any prospect of a musical version of MOONLIGHT?

    How about every film ever should just not be remade? Just make an original already and not 5 sequels 😡

    They wanted Henry Winkler and Susan Day who were popular at the time for the leads in Grease. They couldn’t sing!

    It’s kinda stupid that the running joke is all kids/teens sit on phones and computers all day. I see kids outside playing teens hanging out all the time and I live in hot @ss Arizona.

      I think it's purely hit-or-miss. My 13-year-old will spend as much time outside with his friends as possible, but my 11-year-old would rather stay in playing Roblox or Minecraft with her friends.
