I’ve been a police officer for 25 years. I’ve eaten plenty of meals in cemeteries over those years. They are very peaceful places.

I'd eat lunch in a cemetery. Each of the gravestones is a commemoration of someone, and reading their names helps to keep their memories alive. So, having lunch in a cemetery seems to me to be a respectful thing to do.

I enjoy frequenting cemeteries while on the road... Older ones in particular. Every one of those markers represents a life that has a story. I've always just found them to be interesting, peaceful places.

I've tried a few times to make multi-day videos on long rides and TBH, it is far more difficult that it seems...You are making it look easy, which means you are a true professional! Great story from the road, unfolding as it does...and your dinner looked beyond tasty. thanks for taking the time to put this together :)

Picnics in a cemetery used to be a common thing in bigger cities 100+ years ago, the open green space around a relatives headstone was usually used on their birthday and made a great place to remember past love ones with the family.

When I work for an apartment complex it was two blocks from the oldest cemetery in our city and I often would go there and have lunch or just take a break it had such character it always drew me to it. As a matter of fact shyler Colfax Lincoln's vice president is buried there along with several Studebaker Brothers.

Sometimes finding shade and a quiet place lands one in a cemetery. Totally normal. And I’m sure the residents didn’t mind the company.

I think I would feel it’s a beautiful thing if I saw someone picnicking in a cemetery. I would presume they were hanging out with someone they loved, that they were marking a special anniversary. I don’t know that it would be a first choice for me but I will consider it in the future. I think when I’m six feet under I would appreciate a bike passing by now and again.

Lunch in a cemetery...... Maybe. I don't think I have ever considered it. On my last long distance trip, I did realize that most souther churches have some sort of pavilion or covered picnic area and I started looking for churches for rest stops and meal breaks. LOL! But, I don't think I am averse to eating in a cemetery.

I just returned from a 7 day trip. I spent one night in a hotel due to my sleeping pad failing. After two nights on the ground I was ready for a new sleeping pad and a night in a real bed. So I thought I would cook in my room only to find out that my stove set off the smoke alarm. Have you ever had that happen? I ended up having to cook in the bathroom with the door closed.

I would totally have lunch in a cemetery. They are parks and places to be for the living in addition to memorials for the dead. Père Lachaise in Paris, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York, and Mountain View Cemetery are all park like and encourage visits. I live near Mountain View and people walk there all the time. Every time I go through there are people relaxing and I've even seen picnics there too.

My house backs onto a cemetery, it's great, there's no neighbors like dead neighbors. Dead neighbors are the best neighbors. It's mostly people just jogging through, pushing their strollers, walking their dogs, etc. My dad, grand parents, great grand parents, and a friend are all in there. I wouldn't sweat someone passing through just having a bite by their bike. Maybe if they had spouse, children, and a picnic blanket that would be a little much, but standing by your vehicle, no sweat. I'd do it! What are you filming on in your night shots? Great quality video.

    Hello Amanda.
Love the handlebar mits. No better way to keep your hands warm.
Didn't realise your little air pump doubled as a light. How often do you have to charge it.
Some times you seem to downplay the size of your 500X. Always found 500s to be the do-anything bike without the weight. Had handfuls of them.
As for graveyards, having been privileged to witness someones life force leave in the middle of the night on a C ward, I see a graveyard only as a place to leave a marker for those left behind. So a little bit of respect for the "left behind", but a quiet break, why not.

Hey Amanda, can I get your opinion?
I have been doing most of my road trips (5k to 10k trips, mostly state highways with some 2 track) on a VN900C and the off roads parts are, well, sketchy. I have been debating getting a VStrom650 or the CB500x, mainly because I can't justify the expense of a T700 or the highway appeal of the new KLR.
I have notice that you always talk highly of your cb500, have you ever considered a VStrom and what is it about the Honda (other than their immortal engines) that you like so much?
Appreciate any feedback and I love your videos. Still amazed that you got shadetree out in a tent.

    • @AstheMagpieFlies
      @AstheMagpieFlies  2 года назад +2

      1) yes you can find isobutane at Walmarts
      2) always cook either in the bathroom with the exhaust fan on or next to the window with it wide open. Never cook fish, refried beans, tomato based sauces or anything with a significant smell in a room. I always cook simple vegetables and a starch of some kind, always cleaned up after myself and never leave evidence that you cooked anything you wouldn't be able to cook in the microwave.
It's only a problem if you make it a problem for them too. Is my mentality. I have never gotten a knock on the door or an extra bill at the end. It's just about being thoughtful of how you're leaving the space.
